  • Frame Disputes or Frame Consensus? : "Environment" or "Welfare" First Amongst Climate Strike Protesters
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Present debates suppose a close linkage between economic, social, and environmental sustainability and suggest that individual wellbeing and living standards need to be understood as directly linked to environmental concerns. Because social movements are often seen as an avant-garde in pushing for change, this article analyzes climate protesters’ support for three key frames in current periods of social transformation, i.e., an "environmental", an "economic growth", and a "welfare" frame. The analyzed data material consists of survey responses from over 900 participants in six Global Climate Strikes held in Sweden during 2019. The article investigates the explanatory relevance of three factors: (a) political and ideological orientation, (b) movement involvement, and (c) social characteristics. The results indicate that climate protesters to a large degree support an environmental frame before an economic growth-oriented frame, whereas the situation is more complex regarding support for a welfare frame vis-á-vis an environmental frame. The strongest factors explaining frame support include social characteristics (gender) and protestors’ political and ideological orientation. Movement involvement has limited significance. The article shows how these frames form a fragment of the complexity of these issues, and instances of frame distinctions, hierarchies, and disputes emerge within the most current forms of climate change demonstrations.

  • Social Movements and Interest Groups Compared : How organisational type matters for explaining Swedish organisations’ advocacy strategies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: PArticipation and COnflict. - : University of Salento. - 1972-7623 .- 2035-6609. ; 12:2, s. 353-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The divide between interest groups and social movement studies runs deep, but present developments call for a renewed focus on the relevance of these analytical categories. Both of these two forms of collective action relate to organisations that are assumed to follow distinctive logics and strategies for political influence. This article aims to contribute to the debates on the analytical difference between interest groups and social movements by comparing their political strategies and addressing the relevance of the typology for explaining organisations’ use of political strat-egies. The paper draws on a dataset resulting from a large survey among Swedish civil society organisations among which clear cases of interest group organisations and “old” and “new” social movement organisations (SMOs) were identified. The results show that the distinction between interest groups and social movement organisations has some analytical value when it comes to explaining the use of different types of strategies: e.g. direct lobbying and media-based and protest-based strategies. Also, the distinction between old and new SMOs is shown to be relevant because old SMOs seem to be in a way “in between” interest groups and new SMOs suggesting that social movements tend to develop over time and to become more similar to interest groups.

  • From Radical Counterculture to Pragmatic Radicalism? The Collective Identity of Contemporary Radical Left-libertarian Activism in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal for the Study of Radicalism. - : Michigan State University Press. - 1930-1189 .- 1930-1197. ; 14:1, s. 1-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we analyze the Radical left libertarian movement (RLLM) in Sweden and the development of its collective identity between the mid-1990s and the mid-2010. Overall, our study shows that the RLLM in Sweden has developed from regarding itself as a milieu of radical direct-action groups in the 1990s, to seeing itself as part of a broadly defined working class in the 2000s, and finally to self-identify as an actor rooted in local neighborhoods and the everyday activities of common people in the 2010s. Parallel to these identity transformations, the movement has partially changed its protest targets and choices of tactics, the latter having become less disruptive. The results illustrate how the RLLM’s dual ideological heritage, stemming from the early labor movement and the “new social movements” of the 1960s, has been both a resource for frame transformations and a cause for internal tensions. At times, disputes over framing and strategies have led to internal divisions, and some parts of the movement still cherish previously dominant self-conceptions and strategies. Our analysis also shows that in order to better understand the dynamics of radical movements’ identity transformations, it is important to highlight continuity and change, or both the fluid and static aspects of a movement’s collective identity.

  • Radical Left Movements in Scandinavia, 1980–2020 : Straddling Militant Counterculture and Popular Movements
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Palgrave Handbook of Left-Wing Extremism, Volume 1. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783031308963 - 9783031308970 ; , s. 281-304
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter describes the development of radical left activism in Scandinavia in the post-war period, with a particular focus on the last four decades. During this period, the main tendency in radical left activism shifted from party-based Marxism-Leninism to network-based, direct-action activism based on libertarian socialist ideals. Combining secondary literature with original quantitative and qualitative data on the radical left-libertarian movements (RLLM) in Sweden and Denmark, this chapter shows how RLLM activism emerged, expanded, and ultimately declined between the early 1980s and late 2010s. While there are key differences between the countries in terms of timing and issue foci, the chapter emphasizes the similarities between the countries. Tracing the movements’ development through sequential phases, the chapter shows them shifting from direct-action networks that engaged in a variety of political issue—anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, feminism, animal rights, etc.—to more “conventional” networks of organizations and initiatives through which activists intervened in local politics and neighborhood and workplace conflicts. The same period also saw the RLLM become less disruptive and violent, in favor of tactical pragmatism and conventional forms of protest. The chapter explains these changes as a combination of four main processes: (1) movement-internal developments, (2) changes in the countercultural milieus surrounding the movement, (3) the political institutionalization of the movement’s main counterpart, the far right, and (4) new patterns of protest policing and state repression.

  • When Do Radical Flanks Use Violence? Conditions for Violent Protest in Radical Left-Libertarian Activism in Sweden, 1997–2016
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Terrorism and Political Violence. - : Routledge. - 0954-6553 .- 1556-1836. ; , s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Descriptions of social movement factionalism are often based on the dichotomous conception of lawful moderates and violent radicals. In this article, we nuance this distinction by illustrating the complexity of radical flanks through an empirically grounded analysis of protest tactics, in which we ask under what conditions radical flanks are likely to use violent protest tactics. Exploring dominant explanations of political violence, the article shows the necessity of understanding the use of violent protest tactics as part of cognitive and relational processes. The use of violent tactics varies greatly across frames and protest issues, pointing to how different logics of protest are tied to different frames. Also, the use of violence is affected by the presence or absence of moderate allies; the likelihood of violence clearly decreases when radicals and moderates form coalitions when organising protests. The analysis is based on a protest event data set covering over 3,900 nonviolent and violent events by the Radical Left-Libertarian Movement in Sweden, 1997–2016. Notably, the results hold over this entire twenty-year period, suggesting that they are robust and provide a better explanation than historically contingent causes.

  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 57:1, s. 5-6

  • Klimatvisioner : I vilken sorts klimatvänligt samhälle vill svenskarna leva?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Inferno. - Göteborg : SOM-institutet. - 9789189673557 ; , s. 253-270
