  • Construction, destruction, reconstruction. The architecture of the built tomb of the North Cemetery at Ayios Vasileios, Laconia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Middle and late helladic Laconia : competing principalities? / edited by Corien Wiersma & Maria P. Tsouli.. - Leiden : Sidestone Press. - 9789464260632 ; , s. 229-241
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the reconstruction of a built tomb found in the early Mycenaean cemetery of Ayios Vasileios (in use approx. 1700‑1420 BC), on mainland Greece. Built (Chamber) Tombs belong to a range of tombs with an experimental design that appear in the late Middle Helladic and early Late Helladic period, a period characterised by innovations in the mortuary realm and changing social conditions. The collapsed tomb contained a large mass of stones that were arguably originally part of the superstructure, yet the exact form of cover or roof and the way the tomb was entered are not known. The objective of this study is to reconstruct what the most likely roof design of the built tomb was, how the roof collapsed, and how the tomb was re-entered for additional inhumations. To understand the construction, use and collapse of the tomb, a number of digital techniques have been applied, including Structure from Motion (SfM; also referred to as Photogrammetry), to record the remains of the tomb, and Virtual Reality to build and test various roof constructions. Our virtual reconstruction suggests that the tomb was covered by a stone cairn, supported by a number of horizontally placed wooden beams, which broke due to natural decay and caused the stones to tumble inwards. We also argue that the tomb was entered from above and therefore that the roof of the tomb was dismantled and rebuilt with each addition of new burials (25+)

  • (De)Constructing the Mesolithic. A History of Hut Reconstructions in the Netherlands
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EXARC Journal. - 2212-523X. ; 2020:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of reconstructions of huts from the Mesolithic period all over Northern Europe hasboomed over the last 5 years, signaling a significant increase in scholarly interest. However, thescientific basis of these experimental reconstructions is often unclear. At the same time, theexcavation and preliminary publication of two recently discovered Mesolithic huts in the Netherlandsindicate structures of a completely different build than the proposed reconstructions. This prompted astudy into the history of reconstructions in the Netherlands, as well as their archaeological basis andethnographic inspiration.

  • Experimentele archeologie in een digitale wereld. Een Virtual Reality 3D-reconstructie van Tombe 21 van de noordelijke begraafplaats van Ayios Vasileios (Lakonië, Griekenland)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: De Spieker. ; 41:December 2020, s. 24-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper (in Dutch) presents the reconstruction of a built tomb found in the early Mycenaean (Late Bronze Age) cemetery of Ayios Vasileios, mainland Greece (approx. 1700-1420 BC). Built Tombs belong to a range of tombs with experimental design that appear in the southern Greek mainland in the transition to the Late Bronze Age, a period characterised by rapid social change and innovations in the mortuary realm – such as the construction of this kind of larger tomb. To understand the construction, use and collapse of the tomb, a number of digital techniques have been applied, such as Structure from Motion (SfM; also referred to as Photogrammetry) to record the remains of the tomb, and Virtual Reality to build and test various roof constructions. This has allowed us to assess a number of possible hypotheses and conclude with the most plausible roof design.

  • House Stork. De reconstructie van een Mesolithische hut.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Paleo-aktueel. - 1572-6622. ; 29, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the summer of 2017 a group of archaeology students of the University of Groningen built a reconstruction of a Late-Mesolithic hut (6500 - 5200/4400 cal BP) at the archaeological park Swifterkamp. It was based on the plans of huts excavated by Raymond Newell at Bergumermeer. This article explains the background of the project, the building process, and several observations regarding the use of material and the amount of labour invested in it. Lastly, it offers a number of ways in which the project will proceed in the summer of 2018.

  • Labour mobilization and architectural energetics in the North Cemetery at Ayios Vasilios, Laconia, Greece
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we have formulated a critical assessment on the current use of architectural energetics in archaeology. We then propose an alternative method of measuring and comparing labour investment in the past. Our method is particularly suitable to compare multiple architectural units from a single geographical context. Our research questions are: a) how to interpret labour investment (theoretical); b) how to measure and compare labour investment (methodological); c) how to explain labour mobilization in processes of social change (historical). This method is applied to the recently discovered early Mycenaean cist graves of the North Cemetery at Ayios Vasilios, excavated as part of the Ayios Vasilios Excavations project under the auspices of the Archaeological society of Athens.
