  • Interface electronic states and molecular structure of a triarylamine based hole conductor on rutile TiO2(110)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 128, s. 184709-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The molecular and electronic surface structure of a triarylamine based hole-conductor (HC) molecule evaporated onto rutile TiO2(110) single crystal is investigated by means of synchrotron light based photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with calculations based on density functional theory. Different amounts of the HC molecule was evaporated spanning the monolayer to multilayer region. The molecular surface structure is investigated and the results indicate that no specific covalent chemical bonding is formed and that the plane formed by the different nitrogens in the HC molecules has a rather small angle versus the TiO2 substrate surface plane. Some molecular ordering also persists in the multilayer region. The experimental core level spectra, valence level spectra, and the N 1s x-ray absorption spectroscopy spectra are well modeled by calculations on an individual molecule. Interestingly, the formation of the TiO2/HC interface results in significant binding energy shifts in core levels and valence levels shifting all peaks of a the HC material to the same extent. Smaller shifts were also observed in the substrate core level peaks. The shift is discussed in terms of nanoscale energy level bending and final state hole screening. With respect to electronic applications, specifically in a solid state dye-sensitized solar cell, it is argued that the observed energy level alignment at the TiO2/HC interface can act as a hole trap.

  • Methane emissions from a constructed wetland treating wastewater : Seasonal and spatial distribution and dependence on edaphic factors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Water Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1354 .- 1879-2448. ; 38:18, s. 3960-3970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment have many advantages. They can be used for several purposes, for example, to reduce levels of organic matter and nutrients, and to retain toxic metals. However, most wetlands are inherently net sources of gaseous compounds like methane and nitrous oxide, which are of environmental concern due to their rapid current accumulation in the atmosphere and their potent global warming capacity. In order to determine the flux of methane from a constructed wetland a study was conducted over two growth seasons on a pilot scale wetland constructed to reduce nutrient levels in secondary treated wastewater. The emissions for the spring to autumn period averaged 141 mg CH4 m-2 d-1 (S.D.=187), ranging from consumption of 375 mg CH4 m-2 d-1 to emissions of 1739 mg CH4 m-2 d-1. The spatial and temporal variations were large, but could be accounted for by measured environmental factors. Among these factors, sediment and water temperatures were significant in all cases and independent of the scale of analysis (r2 up to 0.88).

  • Prompt Proton Decay and Deformed Bands in 56Ni
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 77:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the doubly magic N=Z nucleus Ni-56 have been investigated with three fusion-evaporation reaction experiments. New gamma-ray transitions are added, and a confirmation of a previously suggested prompt proton decay from a rotational band in Ni-56 into the ground state of Co-55 is presented. The rotational bands in Ni-56 are discussed within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Prompt Proton Decay in the Vicinity of 56Ni
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proton Emitting Nuclei and Related Topics. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 961, s. 41-46
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new decay mode, the so called prompt proton decay, was discovered in 1998. It has since proven to be an important decay mechanism for several neutron deficient nuclei in the A similar to 60 region. To measure with high accuracy the energies and angular distributions of these protons, a state-of-the-art charged particle detector - LuWuSiA - was developed. It was first utilized during a fusion-evaporation reaction experiment performed at Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A. In this contribution, the characteristics of the prompt proton decay are discussed along with the special features of LuWuSiA as well as a revisit to the prompt proton decay in Cu-58.

  • Thorough Gamma-ray and Particle Decay Investigations of 58Ni
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 80:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combined data from three fusion-evaporation reaction experiments have been utilized to investigate the semi-magic nucleus Ni-58(28)30. To detect gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated particles, the Ge-detector array Gammasphere was used in conjunction with the charged-particle detectors Microball and LuWuSiA (the Lund Washington University Silicon Array), and a neutron detector array. The results yield a significantly extended level scheme of Ni-58 comprising some 340 gamma-ray transitions and include a total of at least 14 discrete particle decays into excited states of the daughter nuclei Fe-54 and Co-57. The level scheme is compared with large-scale shell-model calculations and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Compact soft x-ray reflectometer based on a line-emitting laser-plasma source
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 72:1, s. 58-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe a compact soft x-ray reflectometer for in-house characterization of water-window multilayer optics. The instrument is based on a line-emitting, liquid-jet, laser-plasma source in combination with angular scanning of the studied multilayer optics. With a proper choice of target liquid and thin-film filters, one or a few lines of well-defined wavelength dominate the spectrum and multilayer periods are measured with an accuracy of 0.003 nm using a multi-line calibration procedure. Absolute reflectivity may also be estimated with the instrument. The typical measurement time is currently 10 min. Although the principles of the reflectometer may be used in the entire soft x-ray and extreme ultraviolet range, the current instrument is primarily directed towards normal-incidence multilayer optics for water-window x-ray microscopy, and is thus demonstrated on W/B4C multilayers for this wavelength range.

  • FRAX-based intervention thresholds for Pakistan
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 33, s. 105-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compared, for women in Pakistan, the utility of intervention thresholds either at a T-score <= - 2.5 or based on a FRAX probability equivalent to women of average body mass index (BMI) with a prior fragility fracture. Whereas the FRAX-based intervention threshold identified women at high fracture probability, the T-score threshold was less sensitive, and the associated fracture risk decreased markedly with age. Purpose The fracture risk assessment algorithm FRAX (R) has been recently calibrated for Pakistan, but guidance is needed on how to apply fracture probabilities to clinical practice. Methods The age-specific 10-year probabilities of a major osteoporotic fracture were calculated in women with average BMI to determine fracture probabilities at two potential intervention thresholds. The first comprised the age-specific fracture probabilities associated with a femoral neck T-score of - 2.5. The second approach determined age-specific fracture probabilities that were equivalent to a woman with a prior fragility fracture, without bone mineral density (BMD). The parsimonious use of BMD was additionally explored by the computation of upper and lower assessment thresholds for BMD testing. Results When a BMD T-score <= - 2.5 was used as an intervention threshold, FRAX probabilities in women aged 50 years were approximately two-fold higher than in women of the same age but with no risk factors and average BMD. The relative increase in risk associated with the BMD threshold decreased progressively with age such that, at the age of 80 years or more, a T-score of - 2.5 was actually protective. The 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic fracture by age, equivalent to women with a previous fracture, rose with age from 2.1% at the age of 40 years to 17%, at the age of 90 years, and identified women at increased risk at all ages. Conclusion Intervention thresholds based on BMD alone do not effectively target women at high fracture risk, particularly in the elderly. In contrast, intervention thresholds based on fracture probabilities equivalent to a 'fracture threshold' target women at high fracture risk.
