  • An Illustration of the Causality Relation between Government Spending and Revenue Using Wavelets Analysis on Finish Data
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Statistics, 2003, 30, 571-584. - : Informa UK Limited. ; 30:5, s. 571-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quarterly data for the period 1960:1 to 1997:2, conventional tests, a bootstrap simulation approach and a multivariate Rao's F-test have been used to investigate if the causality between government spending and revenue in Finland was changed at the beginning of 1990 due to future plans to create the European Monetary Union (EMU). The results indicate that during the period before 1990, the government revenue Granger-caused spending, while the opposite happened after 1990, which agrees better with Barro's tax smoothing hypothesis. However, when using monthly data instead of quarterly data for almost the same sample period, totally different results have been noted. The general conclusion is that the relationship between spending and revenue in Finland is still not completely understood. The ambiguity of these results may well be due to the fact that there are several time scales involved in the relationship, and that the conventional analyses may be inadequate to separate out the time scale structured relationships between these variables. Therefore, to investigate empirically the relation between these variables we attempt to use the wavelets analysis that enables us to separate out different time scales of variation in the data. We find that time scale decomposition is important for analysing these economic variables.

  • Testing for Periodicity and Trend in Long-Memory Processes
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents methods of testing the periodicity and trend for the time series, which exhibit dependence over long periods of time. Many such processes can be modeled by a class of models called fractionally differenced processes. The first approach we consider to analyse such processes is by using the band periodogram, which divides the periodogram into different intervals or bands, matching the band-pass of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). In other words, we have a number of high frequency bands and one low frequency band. We investigate the distribution of statistics based on these bands of the long memory processes at high frequency bands, and we show that these distributions are similar to those derived from white noise processes. The next approach for analysing long memory processes is by using the DWT. For long memory processes, the properties of the periodogram of the wavelet scales are similar to those of the band periodograms. We propose two tests for testing the periodicity in the case of long memory processes. The two tests are based on the two methods mentioned above. We develop the Fisher test in the case of simple periodicity, and the Siegel test when we have multiple periodicities. We use simulations to study properties of the tests; in particular we provide results on size and power of the tests. We also investigate the testing of trends in long memory processes. We suggest two test statistics. The first one is based on the quotient of the low frequency band in the periodogram and the high frequency bands. The second one is based on the ratio of low frequency band periodogram to the sum of other ordinates in the periodogram. We also use the DWT method for testing the trend. By the use of simulation we compare our tests with alternative tests. We further investigate the impact of periodicity and trend on different methods of estimating the long memory parameter. We provide a simulation study that shows how the periodicity and trend may affect such methods. We apply our methodology to several environmental time series.

  • Commenting, sharing and tweeting news : Measuring online news participation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : De Gruyter Open. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 37:2, s. 67-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social plugins for sharing news through Facebook and Twitter have become increasingly salient features on news sites. Together with the user comment feature, social plugins are the most common way for users to contribute. The wide use of multiple features has opened new areas to comprehensively study users’ participatory practices. However, how do these opportunities to participate vary between the participatory spaces that news sites affiliated with local, national broadsheet and tabloid news constitute? How are these opportunities appropriated by users in terms of participatory practices such as commenting and sharing news through Facebook and Twitter? In addition, what differences are there between news sites in these respects? To answer these questions, a quantitative content analysis has been conducted on 3,444 articles from nine Swedish online newspapers. Local newspapers are more likely to allow users to comment on articles than are national newspapers. Tweeting news is appropriated only on news sites affiliated with evening tabloids and national morning newspapers. Sharing news through Facebook is 20 times more common than tweeting news or commenting. The majority of news items do not attract any user interaction.

  • ‘Let’s Get Them Involved’ . . . to Some Extent : Analyzing Online News Participation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social Media + Society. - : Sage Publications. - 2056-3051. ; 1:2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of social media applications, such as blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, has offered new participatory opportunities for everyday media users. This article contributes to research by looking into one specific aspect of the increasingly more participatory media ecology—the news comment feature. Drawing on a quantitative content analysis of 1,100 news pieces, as well as spaces for user comments, the article reveals both how this emerging public space is shaped by the media company and, later, appropriated by their participating users. Our analysis reveals, for instance, that the online newspaper prefers to allow users to comment on lightweight news such as sports and entertainment. The users, however, prefer to post comments on news covering changes in proximity space, politics, and health care, while also clearly ignoring the most available news pieces (sport and entertainment). In the concluding section, the discrepancy in preferences is discussed.

  • De sobremesa 1887-1896 : José Asunción Silva:El poeta novelista
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • José Asunción Silva is a Colombian poet most known for having renewed the metrics in Spanish poetry during the 19th century. José Asunción Silva's only novel, De sobremesa 1887-1896 [After dinner, 1887-1896] written in 1896 is a significant and representative modernist novel in the tradition of Latin-American modernismo.Silvas novel has been considered as a structureless, narratively disordered and chaotic text by many literary critics since its first publication in 1925. The text presents a great deal of fragmentation on the surface level: the story is presented by means of temporal discontinuity and multiple narrative voices and its thematic richness seems to be endless. The characters reveal multiple perspectives and a plurality of discourses. This dissertation determines and analyzes the formal and thematic aspects of the text that underlie its apparently disordered structure. The analysis focuses on the study of the referentiality of the text and some of its narrative components. It examines how the different fragments of the story, which are apparently neither logically nor thematically ordered on the surface level, are associated and integrated in the novel as a whole.Silva as a novelist makes use of some of the conventions of poetry and the techniques he applied to his poems. Contrast, association, assimilation and parallelisms are ways of creating new organizational forms of expressions in his prose work. The protagonist of De sobremesa, himself a poet, also plays the role of author, narrator, narratee and reader of his own prose work, his personal diary. This is a very particular feature in the context of Latin-American modernist novels written between 1882- 1902. The study analyzes the different roles of the character in the story to prove that the sense of unity is built by centring the text technically and thematically on the protagonist in its different roles. Silva makes the protagonist the point of convergence of the whole text. This dissertation suggests that there is an organized structure underlying the apparent disorder and incoherence of the text. The basis for Silvas text is diversity and the different where even the smallest parts prove to correspond with a bigger one. For a text of the 19th century, this is an innovative and experimental way of writing that seeks to create unity out of disorder and fragmentation.

  • Standing alone when life takes an unexpected turn : Being a midlife next of kin of a relative who has suffered a myocardial infarction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 27:4, s. 864-871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Suffering a myocardial infarction (MI) is a life-threatening event that impacts not only on the individual concerned but also on the next of kin. However, there seems to be a paucity of naturalistic inquiries that focus specifically on midlife next of kin and their experience of being close to a relative who has suffered an MI. This study aims to elucidate the experience of being a midlife next of kin of a relative who has suffered a myocardial infarction. Method: Nine women and four men in midlife participated in the focused interviews, which were conducted and analysed during 2010/2011 using Lindseths and Norbergs' description of the phenomenological hermeneutical method. Findings: Four themes - Solely responsible, Lurking unease, Left out of the picture and Life on hold - formed the basis of the core theme Standing alone when life takes an unexpected turn. The core theme was interpreted as a central phenomenon encompassing the experience of being solely responsible for the well-being of their relative and the family, thus putting their own life on hold. The core theme also reflected the next of kin's experience of being left out of the picture when it came to the relative's care before and after the MI. Conclusion: The next of kin's negative feelings of standing alone were further intensified by their experience of being left out of the picture by the healthcare professionals concerning their relative's care. As a cardiac nurse, it would seem essential to have knowledge about the experiences of next of kin in connection with a relative's MI event. Such knowledge can facilitate the planning and organisation of nursing care and at the same time address the next of kin's role in the recovery and rehabilitation process.
