  • Ethnic Conflict and the Right to Return of Limbo Disaporas : Multifaceted Reflections on the Case of BiH
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Migration and Ethnic Studies (Migracijske i Etničke Teme). - Zagreb : Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies. - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 20:1, s. 29-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the phenomenon of refugees and resettled persons in the process of forcedmigrations in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Although some of the ideas presented here couldhave wider application, the focus is on post-conflict zones within the former Yugoslavia, namely BiH.The paper uses the questions of ethnicity and nationalism within resettlement, dislocation and immigrationas a backdrop, into which the issue of globalization is also briefly reflected. The intention hereis not to cover a wide range of pressing topics, but simply to relate a number of issues arising in contemporarylarge-scale forced migrations to a resurgence of cultural specificity and ethnicized nationalismas counterpoints to globalization. The paper introduces the concept of “limbo diasporas” in the caseof Bosnian refugees in Sweden through reflection and linkage with the aforementioned concepts. Thepaper ends with some recommendations and open questions on social rehabilitation and ethnic healingas well as some general conclusions.

  • Encounters : representation of the others in modern European history
  • 2003
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This anthology utilizes the concept of encounters to investigate the linked constructions of identity and difference in modern European history. The articles use representations of others to ask basic questions about identity: how is the encountered group described, and what does this description say about the observer and about the cultural group and discourse that the observer represents? The studies span 150 years and a wide geographical area (Germany, the U.S., Sweden and Russia). Importantly, they also demonstrate how descriptions of the “other” vary according to the media used. The form in which the representation is placed – in novels, travel literature, web sites, newspapers or World Fairs – affects the way in which its messages on identity and otherness are conceptualised and conveyed. These articles, thus, not only present insights into how the discourses of, e.g., race, Orientalism, educational, gender and class hierarchies affect concepts of “us and the others”. They also show how the medium functions as an integral part of that message. The book is written by a range of authors ranging from advanced students to professors. It is, accordingly, aimed not only at experts in the field, but also those starting out in identity and cultural studies – serving both as a textbook, and as a work for seasoned scholars looking for recent and innovative investigations in the field of identity studies.

  • An assessment of the translation-specificity of over-represented multi-word patterns in Swedish fiction texts translated from English
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Linguistica Antverpiensia. ; 1, s. 407-417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses in what sense an over-represented multi-word pattern in a corpus of translated texts can be said to be typical of translated text. The purpose of the discussion is to assess, from a quantitative as well as from a qualitative perspective, the status of translational collocation data retrieved through data-driven methods from a comparable and parallel aligned corpus of English and Swedish original and translated texts. The study focuses on the explicitation of clausal relations in translations from English into Swedish. In some cases, lexical and grammatical contrast lead to explicitation, but in others explicitation is due to different factors.

  • Translation-specific lexicogrammar? Characteristic lexical and collocational patterning in Swedish texts translated from En
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Translation Universals - Do They Exist?. ; , s. 129-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on an investigation of the Swedish grammatical word av (‘of’, ‘by’), which is overrepresented in Swedish fiction translations from English in relation to Swedish non-translated fiction texts in the comparable part of The English-Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC). The study also incorporated the most significantly overrepresented collocational patterns involving av. Through the investigation it became clear that the overrepresentation of av is general and significant, and that there is also significant overrepresentation of associated patterns involving lexical as well as grammatical words. The study further indicated that the patterns are mainly due to source language transfer.

  • Black and Swedish: Racialization and the Cultural Politics of Belonging in
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation looks at how racial discourses are used in contemporary Swedes' practices of belonging, their sense of their incorporation into Swedish society. I analyze verbal accounts and narratives of people "of African ancestry" living in Stockholm and those positioned in the normative and racially-unmarked category, "Swede." I study concepts of blackness and the uses to which black bodies are put in Swedish debates. Hegemonic ideas about race, nation, and belonging are investigated through attention to how dichotomous categorizations of "black" and "white" and "Swede" and "African" are produced, contested, undermined, and reproduced by individuals of various classes and generations living in Sweden. Research for this dissertation was based on participant observation and interviews with people in Stockholm, Sweden from March 1995 to May 1996. The theoretical approach used relied on an understanding of individuals as active agents in shaping the discourses and narratives through which they give meanings to their lives while, at the same time, having their lives shaped by popular and governmental discourses and practices. Governmental classificatory schemas, especially those which address immigrants and citizens, are potent sites where individuals and groups come to be thought of as and treated as particular kinds of citizens and subjects. I found that one area where these debates are most salient is in people's "re-memberings" of the national past. This is where people strategically invoke specific narratives of time and space (chronotopes) about race to bridge or expand the ideological distance between Sweden and acknowledged spaces of race, such as the United States, South Africa, and World War II Germany. Swedes of African ancestry differently negotiate, and chronotopically "route" calls for community based on the terms "black" (svart) and "African" (Afrikan), invoking ties to Africa, to diasporic black culture (heavily tinged with Black American icons and practices), and to Swedish language and traditions. African dance classes are also a space where hegemonic notions of belonging are negotiated and sometimes inverted. While official, governmental classifications obscure race as a category, in everyday practices, race is recognized, used, and fiercely debated as a criteria of belonging in Swedish society.
