  • Microwave-induced hyperthermia and ionizing radiation. Preliminary clinical results
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica: Oncology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0349-652X. ; 21:4, s. 241-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combination of microwave-induced (2450 MHz) hyperthermia and ionizing radiation was used in 7 patients with superficial malignant tumours, which were considered refractory to other therapy. A newly developed heating system was used, allowing for a maintained temperature at the master probe of 42.5 degrees C +/- 0.5 degrees C during 45 min, but temperature measurements at multiple sites showed a marked variation. This preliminary series indicates that the combination of hyperthermia and ionizing radiation may be useful, the response rate (complete or partial) being 8 of 8 evaluable lesions. Even previously heavily irradiated sites responded. Technical improvements are highly needed to allow for controlled heating of any tissue volume.

  • Technique for microwave-induced hyperthermia in superficial human tumours
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica: Oncology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0349-652X. ; 21:4, s. 235-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to induce local hyperthermia in superficial tumours a computer system using a 2,450 MHz microwave generator connected to a circular (diameter 90 mm) direct contact applicator was constructed based on invasive temperature control. Small thermistor probes with a diameter of 0.6 mm are inserted in the tumour and surrounding tissues. Eight thermistors can be used simultaneously and one of them is chosen as the "master'. The automatic control system used a pulsed irradiation technique to avoid the problem with interactions between the metallic wires of the temperature probe and the electromagnetic field. With the system it was possible to control the temperature at the master thermistor within +/- 0.5 degrees C from the preset value.

  • Treatment of malignant melanoma with dacarbazin (DTIC‐DOME) with special reference to urinary excretion of 5‐S‐cysteinyldopa
  • 1980
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - 0008-543X. ; 45:2, s. 245-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Seventeen patients were given DTIC, 200 mg/m2/day in five‐day courses every four to six weeks. In four patients (stage II) treated on an adjuvant basis, tumor recurrence has been verified in three. Four of the palliatively treated patients were also given DTIC by regional intra‐arterial infusion with minimal positive tumor effect and minimal toxicity. 5‐S‐cysteinyldopa excretion in urine was checked continuously in all patients. Tumor recurrence was revealed in two patients given DTIC on an adjuvant basis three and four months before clinical signs of tumor. In the palliatively treated patients, 5‐S‐cysteinyldopa excretion increased in 5/6 patients judged to have stable disease, before tumor progression was clinically detectable. The use of 5‐S‐cysteinyldopa examination is a valuable adjunct to the follow‐up of the effect of DTIC therapy in melanoma patients.

  • Natural killer cell activity and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity in newborn infants
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-656X .- 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 71:3, s. 431-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability of lymphocytes from the peripheral blood of preterm and term infants and adult women and men to mediate natural killing (NK) and K cell activity (antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity) was analysed in 4 hours 51Cr-release assays. K 562 cells were targets for NK activity. K cell activity was assayed on antibody-coated rat thymocytes. Lymphocytes from adult male donors were significantly more cytotoxic to K 562 cells than were lymphocytes from adult female donors. Lymphocytes from both preterm and term infants had significantly lower NK and K cell activity than lymphocytes from adult donors. During the first month of life no increase in NK activity or K cell activity occurred in 7 infants who were re-examined. It is concluded that neither NK nor K cell activities are fully developed during the first month of life.

  • Immunoglobulin-A producing probably primary lymphoma of the breast
  • 1983
  • Ingår i: Virchows Archiv. - 1432-2307. ; 399:3, s. 355-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A breast tumour from a 65-year old woman was found to be a primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a very rare primary malignancy in this location. The lymphoma was of a diffuse histiocytic type according to the classification of Rappaport, or polymorphic immunocytoma according to the Kiel classification. Immunohistochemistry, not previously reported for breast lymphomas, revealed the production of IgA. In the serum this appeared as an IgA M-component which was greatly reduced after tumour removal. Immunological properties of primary breast lymphomas are reviewed, we suggest further extended studies with the immunohistochemical use of marker substances for the evaluation of prognosis. © 1983 Springer-Verlag.

  • Complete remission in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia treated with leukocyte α-interferon and cimetidine
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: Cancer Immunology Immunotherapy. - 0340-7004. ; 17:1, s. 69-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A 76-year-old woman with acute myelogenous leukemia with approximately 65% myeloblasts on bone marrow examination was treated daily with a combination of 4 megaU of leukocyte interferon IM and 1,000 mg cimetidine PO. During therapy there was a gradual decrease of bone marrow myeloblasts down to 9% and a normalization of peripheral white blood cells. The treatment was discontinued after 6 weeks because of increasing fatigue and anorexia. The general condition improved greatly during the following weeks and the patient entered complete remission, which has continued for 6 months so far. In the course of therapy there was a gradual appearance of antibodies showing a selective binding capacity to autochthonous leukemic cells with no tendency to increased binding to remission cells. The aim of this report is to stimulate a further evaluation of this form of therapy in additional AML patients whenever this might be justified as an alternative to conventional chemotherapy.
