Genomförandet av vattenförvaltningen – En jämförelse mellan Irland och Sverige

- Ramdirektivet för vatten antogs år 2000. Sedan dess har både Sverige och Irland vidtagit ett stort antal åtgärder för att genomföra direktivet. Båda länderna har delats in i vattendistrikt. I Sverige organiseras genomförandet av direktivet på distriktsnivå av vattenmyndigheter och på Irland av en projektgrupper ledda av lokala myndigheter. Det praktiska arbetet utförs av konsulter på Irland och av tjänstemän i Sverige. Implementeringen av direktivet i nationell lagstiftning är genomförd i Sverige och genomförs etappvis på Irland. Båda länderna har tagit fram och antagit nya föreskrifter och Sverige har även antagit en ny förordning och gjort ändringar i befintlig lagstiftning. Båda länderna har upprättat webbsidor, tagit fram tryckt informationsmaterial (till exempel broschyrer) och har bildat eller håller på att bilda vattenråd. Sverige har också tagit fram webbaserade verktyg för att underlätta allmänhetens deltagande – Vattenkartan och databasen Vatteninformationssystem Sverige (VISS). Irland har involverat intresseorganisationer i vattenförvaltningen genom att bjuda in representanter att vara med i vattenråden. Ideella miljöorganisationer representeras av SWAN, ett nätverk av trettio organisationer. Irland och Sverige har mycket att lära av varandra och ett fortsatt utbyte rekommenderas. Irland kan till exempel lära av Sveriges sätt att arbeta med vattenråd och Sverige kan lära av Irlands organisation av genomförandet på nationell nivå.

- "Vi bodde, bad och blev utbildade som om vi vore på skilda kontinenter" är ett citat ur en äldre Belfastkvinnas berättelse om sin uppväxt i en protestantisk arbetarmiljö i Belfast strax efter sekelskiftet 1900. Citatet visar den starka segregation mellan katoliker och protestanter som hade utvecklats vid denna tid och som fortfarande lever kvar som en central del av Nordirlandkonflikten. I boken analyseras, mot bakgrund av den politiska, sociala och ekonomiska utvecklingen i Irland 1850-1914, framväxten av denna skarpa segregation och de identiteter som skapas i detta sammanhang. För att förstå identitetsskapandet och hur "vi och dem" grupper cementeras studeras människors hela liv. Det rör sig om arbetsmarknad och arbetsliv, boende, fritid samt facklig och politisk organisering. Därvidlag visas på ett komplicerat samspel mellan identitetsgrunder som klass, genus och etnicitet.

- The major aim of our current work is to develop a deep understanding of biological effects of nanoparticles and how these effects are mediated by proteins that are adsorbed on the nanoparticles under different biological circumstances. Due to their small size, nanoparticles have distinct properties compared to the bulk form of the same materials, and these properties are rapidly revolutionizing many areas of medicine and technology. However, relatively little is known about the interaction of nanoscale objects with biological systems, as this requires quite different concepts from more established nanoscience. Thus, we have argued that in a biological fluid, proteins associate with nanoparticles, and it is the amount and presentation of the proteins on the surface rather than the particles themselves that are the cause of numerous biological responses. It is this outer layer of proteins that is seen by the biological cells, and leads to their responses. We are developing novel techniques to identify and quantify the proteins that are consistently associated with nanoparticles, as a function of the nanoparticle size, shape, and surface properties, and to correlate the adsorbed protein identities with their association and dissociation rates to and from the nanoparticles. We also seek to understand the degree of conformational change that they undergo upon adsorption to the nanoparticles. In essence, we wish to create "epitope maps" of the protein corona that surrounds nanoparticles in biological solutions, as it is the particle-protein complex that is the biologically active entity.
