- Prevalence of alcohol dependence and abuse (ADA) was determined in a cohort of women selected by stratified random sampling from the general population in Gothenburg. A questionnaire was administered to 3,130 women and 399 were interviewed. Questions were asked about social background, living conditions, family and working life. Volume and frequency of alcohol intake were recorded, and diagnoses were made according to DSM-III. We found that the one-year prevalence of ADA was 1.5 percent and the life time prevalence 3.3 percent. In a follow-up five years after base-line, the prevalence of ADA was unchanged, while indicators of high alcohol consumption and high episodic drinking showed reduced levels of problem drinking.

- The aim of this study was to describe the personal experiences of collaboration and co-operation between staff from the community mental health and social services programmes in their daily work with schizophrenic patients. An additional aim was to generate the first step in a theory of how staff in the field of health care and social services manages to integrate their efforts on an individual and organizational level. The study group consisted of five members of a multidisciplinary team who had been working for 2 years with assertive outreach intensive clinical case management. Verbatim-transcribed thematic interviews were analysed according to the comparative method for grounded theory. The analysis was focused on quality of interpersonal interaction between practitioners, representing different professions in community-based mental health care, as well as the professional relationship to the patients/clients and their relatives. In the light of an individual and organizational perspective, different typologies of interpersonal interactions appeared. Three main variables were identified: collaborative relationship, co-operative partnership and professional-amateurism. Our findings on these qualitative differences in interpersonal relations should be taken into account in the continuing reorganization of the community health care services. This knowledge can also help in overcoming barriers between patients, professionals and organizations in the mental health services.

- Collaboration between services has often been suggested as a means to increase effectiveness and reduce costs especially in the care and rehabilitation of long-term illness. In Sweden, a special legislation named SOCSAM was introduced in 1994, enabling financial collaboration between governmental and municipal authorities. In this paper we report on a qualitative study on collaboration around patients with musculoskeletal diseases. The aim of the study was to assess differences in goal formulation, collaboration and communication between staff in intervention health centres that have implemented co-financing projects and health centres working under conventional conditions. Focus group interviews were performed with staff at intervention and control health care centres. We found that the interdisciplinary collaboration had improved in the intervention health care centres compared to the controls. Our findings suggest that co-financing can enhance development of better forms of interdisciplinary and interorganisational collaboration through legitimising formulation of common long-term goals, while emphasising mutual benefits.

- In this paper, we present an ongoing research project aimed to determine the impact of co-financing on collaboration around patients with musculoskeletal disorders. A trial legislation that allows the social insurance, social services and health care services to unite in co-financing under joint political steering has been tested in different areas in Sweden. In a series of studies, we compare collaboration processes and health outcome for patients with musculoskeletal disorders between health centres with co-financing projects and control health centres without co-financing projects. In this paper the studies are described and some preliminary results are discussed.
