  • Determination of the strong coupling constant αs from transverse energy–energy correlations in multijet events at √s=8TeV using the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Measurements of transverse energy–energy correlations and their associated asymmetries in multi-jet events using the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. The data used correspond to s=8TeV proton–proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 20.2fb-1. The results are presented in bins of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the two leading jets, unfolded to the particle level and compared to the predictions from Monte Carlo simulations. A comparison with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD is also performed, showing excellent agreement within the uncertainties. From this comparison, the value of the strong coupling constant is extracted for different energy regimes, thus testing the running of αs(μ) predicted in QCD up to scales over 1TeV. A global fit to the transverse energy–energy correlation distributions yields αs(mZ)=0.1162±0.0011(exp.)-0.0070+0.0084(theo.), while a global fit to the asymmetry distributions yields a value of αs(mZ)=0.1196±0.0013(exp.)-0.0045+0.0075(theo.). © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

  • Measurement of jet pT correlations in Pb + Pb and pp collisions at sNN=2.76 TeVwith the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • In: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 774, s. 379-402
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Measurements of dijet pT correlations in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=2.76 TeV are presented. The measurements are performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using Pb+Pb and pp data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 0.14 nb−1 and 4.0 pb−1, respectively. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter values R=0.3 and R=0.4. A background subtraction procedure is applied to correct the jets for the large underlying event present in Pb+Pb collisions. The leading and sub-leading jet transverse momenta are denoted pT1 and pT2. An unfolding procedure is applied to the two-dimensional (pT1,pT2) distributions to account for experimental effects in the measurement of both jets. Distributions of (1/N)dN/dxJ, where xJ=pT2/pT1, are presented as a function of pT1 and collision centrality. The distributions are found to be similar in peripheral Pb+Pb collisions and pp collisions, but highly modified in central Pb+Pb collisions. Similar features are present in both the R=0.3 and R=0.4 results, indicating that the effects of the underlying event are properly accounted for in the measurement. The results are qualitatively consistent with expectations from partonic energy loss models. © 2017 The Author

  • Measurement of lepton differential distributions and the top quark mass in tt¯ production in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents single lepton and dilepton kinematic distributions measured in dileptonic tt¯ events produced in 20.2fb - 1 of s=8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Both absolute and normalised differential cross-sections are measured, using events with an opposite-charge eμ pair and one or two b-tagged jets. The cross-sections are measured in a fiducial region corresponding to the detector acceptance for leptons, and are compared to the predictions from a variety of Monte Carlo event generators, as well as fixed-order QCD calculations, exploring the sensitivity of the cross-sections to the gluon parton distribution function. Some of the distributions are also sensitive to the top quark pole mass; a combined fit of NLO fixed-order predictions to all the measured distributions yields a top quark mass value of mtpole=173.2±0.9±0.8±1.2 GeV, where the three uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental systematics, and theoretical sources. © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

  • Measurement of the k t splitting scales in Z → ℓℓ events in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • In: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; 2017:8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A measurement of the splitting scales occuring in the kt jet-clustering algorithm is presented for final states containing a Z boson. The measurement is done using 20.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The measurement is based on chargedparticle track information, which is measured with excellent precision in the pT region relevant for the transition between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes. The data distributions are corrected for detector effects, and are found to deviate from state-of-the-art predictions in various regions of the observables.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]. © 2017, The Author(s).

  • Measurement of the t t production cross section in the τ+jets final state in pp collisions at s =8 TeV using the ATLAS detector

  • In: Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology. - 1550-2368. ; 95:7
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A measurement of the inclusive pp→tt+X production cross section in the τ+jets final state using only the hadronic decays of the τ lepton is presented. The measurement is performed using 20.2 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The cross section is measured via a counting experiment by imposing a set of selection criteria on the identification and kinematic variables of the reconstructed particles and jets, and on event kinematic variables and characteristics. The production cross section is measured to be σtt=239±29 pb, which is in agreement with the measurements in other final states and the theoretical predictions at this center-of-mass energy. © 2017 CERN.

  • Measurement of the W boson polarisation in tt¯ events from pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV in the lepton + jets channel with ATLAS
  • 2017
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 77:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents a measurement of the polarisation of W bosons from tt¯ decays, reconstructed in events with one high-pT lepton and at least four jets. Data from pp collisions at the LHC were collected at s = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb- 1. The angle θ∗ between the b-quark from the top quark decay and a direct W boson decay product in the W boson rest frame is sensitive to the W boson polarisation. Two different W decay products are used as polarisation analysers: the charged lepton and the down-type quark for the leptonically and hadronically decaying W boson, respectively. The most precise measurement of the W boson polarisation via the distribution of cos θ∗ is obtained using the leptonic analyser and events in which at least two of the jets are tagged as b-quark jets. The fitted fractions of longitudinal, left- and right-handed polarisation states are F0=0.709±0.019, FL=0.299±0.015 and FR=-0.008±0.014, and are the most precisely measured W boson polarisation fractions to date. Limits on anomalous couplings of the Wtb vertex are set. © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

    • This paper presents the extended results of measurements of W±W±jj production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings using 20.3 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at s=8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two leptons (e or μ) with the same electric charge and at least two jets are analyzed. Production cross sections are determined in two fiducial regions, with different sensitivities to the electroweak and strong production mechanisms. An additional fiducial region, particularly sensitive to anomalous quartic gauge coupling parameters α4 and α5, is introduced, which allows more stringent limits on these parameters compared to the previous ATLAS measurement. © 2017 CERN.

  • Measurements of long-range azimuthal anisotropies and associated Fourier coefficients for pp collisions at s =5.02 and 13 TeV and p+Pb collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector MEASUREMENTS of LONG-RANGE AZIMUTHAL ...

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ATLAS measurements of two-particle correlations are presented for s=5.02 and 13 TeV pp collisions and for sNN=5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle Δφ, and pseudorapidity separation Δη, using charged particles detected within the pseudorapidity interval |η|2, is studied using a template fitting procedure to remove a "back-to-back" contribution to the correlation function that primarily arises from hard-scattering processes. In addition to the elliptic, cos(2Δφ), modulation observed in a previous measurement, the pp correlation functions exhibit significant cos(3Δφ) and cos(4Δφ) modulation. The Fourier coefficients vn,n associated with the cos(nΔφ) modulation of the correlation functions for n=2-4 are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and charged-particle transverse momentum. The Fourier coefficients are observed to be compatible with cos(nφ) modulation of per-event single-particle azimuthal angle distributions. The single-particle Fourier coefficients vn are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, and charged-particle transverse momentum for n=2-4. The integrated luminosities used in this analysis are, 64 nb-1 for the s=13 TeV pp data, 170 nb-1 for the s=5.02 TeV pp data, and 28 nb-1 for the sNN=5.02 TeV p+Pb data. © 2017 CERN.

  • Measurements of top-quark pair differential cross-sections in the lepton+jets channel in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector
  • 2017
  • In: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2017:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Measurements of differential cross-sections of top-quark pair production in fiducial phase-spaces are presented as a function of top-quark and tt¯ system kinematic observables in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1, recorded in 2015 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events with exactly one electron or muon and at least two jets in the final state are used for the measurement. Two separate selections are applied that each focus on different top-quark momentum regions, referred to as resolved and boosted topologies of the tt¯ final state. The measured spectra are corrected for detector effects and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations by means of calculated χ2 and p-values. © 2017, The Author(s).
