  • Caregiver Perception of Weight Status in 5-Year-Old Children From a Community of High Socioeconomic Deprivation in New Zealand
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers In Public Health. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-2565. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundEarly childhood obesity is highly prevalent in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Little is known about caregiver perception of children's weight status among those living in areas of high socioeconomic deprivation, particularly Maori and Pacific children. AimsTo explore caregiver perception of weight status among children starting school in areas of high socioeconomic deprivation and examine potential associations between the child's body mass index (BMI) z-score and their caregiver's perception of their child's body size or health. MethodsParticipants were 5-year-old children living in a community of high socioeconomic deprivation and their caregivers. Children had their weight and height measured. BMI z-scores were calculated according to World Health Organization standards. Caregivers were asked to assess their child's BMI and health status, and choose a silhouette that best represented their child's body size. ResultsOne hundred and six children (>75% Maori or Pacific) were included. Over half (58%) had overweight or obesity, with only 16% correctly perceived by their caregiver as overweight. These children tended to have higher BMI z-scores than those not correctly perceived as overweight. Caregivers chose larger silhouettes to represent children's body sizes as children's BMI z-scores increased. There was no discernible association between children's BMI z-scores and caregiver perception of children's health. ConclusionsCaregivers appeared to judge their child's body size in comparison to other children. The normalization of childhood obesity and infrequent caregiver recognition of this condition in children in communities with a high prevalence may impact the uptake and efficacy of intervention initiatives.

  • 14C-dating of the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke: status report 2020
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Decline of Bronze Age Civilisations in the Mediterranean: Cyprus and Beyond, 17 -18, January, Gothenburg, Sweden 2020 / edited by Theresa Bürge & Peter Fischer. - Nicosia : Astrom Editions. - 0081-8232. - 9789925793532
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this chapter is to present the updated radiocarbon chronology of the Late Bronze Age metropolis of Hala Sultan Tekke on Cyprus, which flourished from ca 1630 to 1150 BC. In the course of the current excavations, which started in 2010, 50 AMS 14C dates from various city quarters (CQ) and the cemetery area (Area A) were obtained. Whenever possible, short-lived terrestrial plant remains were used for dating in order to avoid any material-inherent age o昀昀sets. If only charcoals were available the samples were inspected by a dendrochronologist and only samples where a negligible ‘old wood’ effect could be expected, were selected for 14C determinations. A compilation of these data is presented here. The number of available dates (34) of samples from Strata 3 to 1 from CQ1 allowed a Bayesian model to determine the most probable time intervals when the transition between the various strata took place.

  • A 6000-year record of climate change from Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Decline of Bronze Age Civilisations in the Mediterranean: Cyprus and Beyond, 17-18 Januari, 2020, Gothenburg Sweden / edited by Theresa Bürge & Peter Fischer. - Nicosia : Astrom Editions. - 0081-8232. - 9789925793532
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our study suggests that the history of civilisations in the Eastern Mediterranean has been partially affected by climate by contributing to social unrest and migration. Five important cold periods have been identified in the Hala Sultan Tekke palaeoclimate reconstruction at 5250±20, 4215±40, 3200±90, 1400±70 and 620±20 years BP. Each cold period is consistent with a significant instability in precipitation, mainly for winter and spring seasons. The 3.2ka BP event is not an isolated event and is part of the 1000-year cycles between the main cold and dry episodes at 5200, 4200 and 3200 BP. When occurring coevally, climate and socio-economic factors were probably important drivers of major crises, which appears to have been the case at Hala Sultan Tekke during the final period of the Late Bronze Age.

  • Petrographic studies of ceramics from Hala Sultan Tekke: evidence for intra-island and interregional connections
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The decline of bronze age civilisations in the Mediterranean : Cyprus and beyond, 17-18 January, 2020, Gothenburg, Sweden / edited by Teresa Bürge and Peter M. Fischer. - Nicosia : Astrom Editions. - 0081-8232. - 9789925793532
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a large-scale petrographic analysis of the ceramics from Hala Sultan Tekke, which offers an unprecedented view of various aspects of economy and daily life in this harbour city during the final part of the Bronze Age. The aim of the study is to systematically investigate the ceramic fabrics to shed further light on provenance and production techniques. Provenance studies will contribute to a deeper understanding of cultural and economic contacts and networks, both between Hala Sultan Tekke and other Late Cypriot regions as well as to other regions in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond. Since the site shows an occupation from at least the beginning of the Late Cypriot period (around 1630 BC; Fischer & Bürge 2022: 9) to the second half of the 12th century BC, i.e. the LC IIIA (Fischer & Bürge 2018a), it offers an excellent possibility to study diachronic developments during the Late Bronze Age and especially in the period of transformations around 1200 BC. Typological investigations of the Late Cypriot ceramic assemblage are, since the early 1970s, intrinsically tied to excavations in the harbour city of Hala Sultan Tekke, the rich assemblage of which has provided much comparative information (see HST1–12; Bürge & Fischer 2018; also Åström 1972). Beyond ware classification, also macroscopic observations of the fabric, tempering, surface treatment and decoration contributed to a fairly accurate macroscopic identification of the production region and applied technologies.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Opuscula. Annual of the Swedish Institute at Athens and Rome. - : Editorial Committee of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome (ECSI). - 2000-0898. ; 13, s. 73-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tenth season of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke was carried out in four areas: City Quarter 1 (CQ1), CQ4, City Wall 1 (CW1), and Area A (Tomb RR). The excavations in CQ1 provided additional information on the pre-LC IIIA occupation of the city. Stratum 3 which can be dated to the LC IIC (13th century BC) was further exposed. For the first time in the city even older phases, Strata 4 and 5, were found. These are tentatively dated to the LC I–II (15th to 14th century BC). In CQ4 numerous storage areas were exposed, which belong to a large compound. There is also evidence of production of textiles and purple dye. All remains can be associated to the most recent Stratum 1 and can be securely dated in the LC IIIA, i.e. the 12th century BC. A test trench (CW1) was opened up 150 m to the south-east of CQ4, in an area where the magnetometer survey indicated a possible city wall with moat. A c. 2.5 m-wide man-made construction consisting of small stones intermingled with larger blocks of stones was found running north–south. Built against the interior of this structure is a copperproducing workshop as indicated by much slag, ash, and remains of a furnace, which is preliminarily dated to the 13th century BC. Tomb RR, which was partly excavated in 2018 and secured, was reopened and additional burials came to light. The total number of skeletons now stands at 37; these are associated with 74 complete/intact finds of mainly pottery vessels of which some contained food remains. The pottery comprises Cypriot-produced wares and Mycenaean imports, which indicate a LC IIB–C date of the burials. Other finds include a unique Minoan female figurine and a bronze knife with ivory handle.*

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Opuscula: Annual of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome. - : Editorial Committee of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome (ECSI). - 2000-0898. ; :15, s. 7-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2020 and 2021, the eleventh and twelfth seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in the cemetery of Area A. Based on indications provided by a large-scale magnetometer survey, two tombs exposed by intensive farming were located, Tombs RR and SS. The excavation of Tomb RR, which had started in 2018, was concluded. The total minimum number (MNI) of skeletons in this tomb, of which most were incomplete and disarticulated, is estimated at 137. In addition to clay figurines, seals and scarabs, objects of ivory, as well as jewellery of gold, silver, bronze, faience and carnelian, the inhumations are associated with more than 100 intact or complete ceramic vessels, many of them imported from the Mycenaean, Minoan, Hittite and Levantine spheres of culture. The pottery indicates a LC II(A/)B– C1 date of the inhumations, i.e., covering the 14th and the beginning of the 13th centuries BC. The excavations of the adjacent Tomb SS began in 2020 and has been concluded in May 2022. It contained a minimum of eleven inhumations, most of them (almost) complete and articulated, and large deposits of Cypriot and imported pottery, in total over 300 vessels mainly from the LC (I–)IIB, i.e., from the 16th/15th to mainly the 14th centuries BC. These contexts not only offer an insight into the complex Late Cypriot mortuary practices and funerary rituals but also reflect the urban élites with far-reaching inter-cultural connections.*

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition (The Söderberg Expedition): Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke autumn 2021 and spring 2022
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Opuscula: Annual of the Swedish Institutes at Athens and Rome. - 2000-0898. ; 16, s. 7-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2021 and 2022, the 13th and 14th seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in Area A, and as a result of these investigations numerous tombs were found. These tombs were threatened by farming. Four magnetic anomalies, indicated in the 2017 survey magnetometer map, were investigated. They represent three tombs, L198, TT, and UU, and the probable Offering Pit SS-S. The minimum number of individuals (MNI) in Pit Tomb L198, which contains only secondary burials, is six. They are associated with 21 ceramic vessels of which a few were imported from Anatolia. Chamber Tomb TT was completely excavated and contained a minimum of 25 individuals and 78 objects. Among these are 47 ceramic vessels of which a few are from the Mycenaean sphere of culture. Other mortuary gifts are various objects of metal, faience, carnelian, haematite, and rock crystal in addition to three scarabs. The incompletely excavated large (Chamber?) Tomb UU contained, so far, a minimum of 19 individuals and 140 objects. They comprise 124 ceramic vessels including numerous Late Helladic, Late Minoan, and Anatolian pottery. Other finds are bronze and gold jewellery, the latter including a diadem, and a duck-shaped ivory box from the same context as Egyptian-imported vessels of calcite. None of the tombs and the offering pit, which can all be roughly dated to the 14th century BC, were looted. The special arrangements of the human bones in Chamber Tomb TT and the multitude of imported materials in Tomb UU offer additional insights into complex Late Cypriot mortuary practices and the far-reaching interregional connections of the urban élites of Hala Sultan Tekke.
