  • Self-organized helical equilibria as a new paradigm for ohmically heated fusion plasmas
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1745-2473 .- 1745-2481. ; 5:8, s. 570-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the quest for new energy sources, the research on controlled thermonuclear fusion has been boosted by the start of the construction phase of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). ITER is based on the tokamak magnetic configuration, which is the best performing one in terms of energy confinement. Alternative concepts are however actively researched, which in the long term could be considered for a second generation of reactors. Here, we show results concerning one of these configurations, the reversed-field pinch (RFP). By increasing the plasma current, a spontaneous transition to a helical equilibrium occurs, with a change of magnetic topology. Partially conserved magnetic flux surfaces emerge within residual magnetic chaos, resulting in the onset of a transport barrier. This is a structural change and sheds new light on the potential of the RFP as the basis for a low-magnetic-field ohmic fusion reactor.

  • Overview of RFX-mod results
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 49:10, s. 104019-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the exploration of the MA plasma current regime in up to 0.5 s long discharges, RFX-mod has opened new and very promising perspectives for the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration, and has made significant progress in understanding and improving confinement and in controlling plasma stability. A big leap with respect to previous knowledge and expectations on RFP physics and performance has been made by RFX-mod since the last 2006 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. A new self-organized helical equilibrium has been experimentally achieved ( the Single Helical Axis-SHAx-state), which is the preferred state at high current. Strong core electron transport barriers characterize this regime, with electron temperature gradients comparable to those achieved in tokamaks, and by a factor of 4 improvement in confinement time with respect to the standard RFP. RFX-mod is also providing leading edge results on real-time feedback control of MHD instabilities, of general interest for the fusion community.

  • Helical equilibria and magnetic structures in the reversed field pinch and analogies to the tokamak and stellarator
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0741-3335 .- 1361-6587. ; 51:12, s. 124031-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reversed field pinch configuration is characterized by the presence of magnetic structures both in the core and at the edge: in the core, at high plasma current the spontaneous development of a helical structure is accompanied by the appearance of internal electron transport barriers; at the edge strong pressure gradients, identifying an edge transport barrier, are observed too, related to the position of the field reversal surface. The aim of this paper is the experimental characterization of both the internal and edge transport barriers in relation to the magnetic topology, discussing possible analogies and differences with other confinement schemes.

  • Search and analysis of blue straggler stars in open clusters
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 459:2, s. 489-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. This paper presents a new homogeneous catalogue of blue straggler stars ( BSS) in Galactic open clusters. Methods. Photometric data for 216 clusters were collected from the literature and 2782 BSS candidates were extracted from 76 of them. Results. We found that the anticorrelation of BSS frequency vs. total magnitude identified in similar studies conducted on Galactic globular clusters extends to the open cluster regime: clusters with smaller total magnitude tend to have higher BSS frequencies. Moreover, a clear correlation between the BSS frequency ( obtained normalising the total number of BSS either to the total cluster mass or, for the older clusters, to the total number of clump stars) and the age of the clusters was found. A simple model is developed here to try to explain this last and new result. The model allows us to ascertain the important effect played by mass loss in the evolution of open clusters.

  • Increased renal arterial resistance predicts the course of renal function in type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 1939-327X .- 0012-1797. ; 55:1, s. 234-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Type 2 diabetic patients often die because of end-stage renal failure, but no definitive reliable factor predicting long-term renal outcome has been identified. We tested whether a renal arterial resistance index (R/I) >= 80, using Doppler ultrasound technique, was predictive of worsening renal function. The primary end points of the study were 1) the course of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and 2) the albumin excretion rate in 157 microalbuminuric, hypertensive, type 2 diabetic patients after a 7.8-year follow-up period (range 7.1-9.2). Kaplan-Meier curves for the primary end point (decrease of GFR 3.0 ml/min per 1.73 in per year) was two to three times more frequently observed in patients with R/I >= 80. Four- to fivefold fewer patients showed a regression to normoalbuminuria during the follow-up period from baseline microalbuminuria in the cohort with R/I >= 80. Overt proteinuria did develop in 24% of patients with R/I >= 80 and in 5% of patients with R/I <80 (P < 0.01). In conclusion, intrarenal arterial resistance appears to play a nontrivial role in deteriorating renal function in type 2 diabetic patients. R/I is a noninvasive diagnostic procedure, which strongly predicts the outcome of renal function in type 2 diabetic patients, even when GFR patterns are still normal.

  • Simvastatin maintains steady patterns of GFR and improves AER and expression of slit diaphragm proteins in type II diabetes
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Kidney International. - : Elsevier BV. - 1523-1755 .- 0085-2538. ; 70:1, s. 177-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The factors determining the course of glomerular fitration rate (GFR) and albumin excretion rate (AER) and the expression of mRNA of slit diaphragm (SD) and podocyte proteins in microalbuminuric, hypertensive type II diabetic patients are not fully understood. GFR, AER, and SD protein mRNA were studied in 86 microalbuminuric, hypertensive, type II diabetics at baseline and after 4-year random double-blind treatment either with 40 mg simvastatin (Group 1) or with 30 g cholestyramine (Group 2) per day. Both groups had at baseline a GFR decay per year in the previous 2-4 years of 3 ml/min/1.73 m(2). Both Groups 1 and 2 showed a significant decrease of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels after simvastatin and cholestyramine treatment (P < 0.01). No change from base line values was observed as for hs-C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. A significant decrease of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine urinary excretion was observed after simvastatin treatment. GFR did not change from baseline with simvstatin, whereas a decrease was observed with cholestyramine treatment ( simvastatin vs cholestyramine: -0.21 vs -2.75 ml/min/ 1.73 m(2), P < 0.01). AER decreased in Group 1 (P < 0.01), but not in Group 2 patients. Real-time polymerase chain reaction measurement of mRNA SD proteins (CD2AP, FAT, Actn 4, NPHS1, and NPHS2) significantly increased in kidney biopsy specimens after simvastatin, but not cholestyramine treatment. Simvastatin, but not cholestyramine, 4-year treatment maintains steady patterns of GFR, and improves AER and expression of SD proteins in type II diabetes, despite similar hypocholesterolemic effects in circulation.
