  • Spatially resolved toroidal plasma rotation with ICRF on JET
  • 2003
  • In: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 43:4, s. 274-289
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Plasmas heated by ICRF only in the JET tokamak show distinct structures in the toroidal rotation profile, with regions where domega/dr > 0 when the minority cyclotron resonance layer is far off-axis. The rotation is dominantly co-current with a clear off-axis maximum. There is only a slight difference between a high-field side (HFS) or a low-field side position of this resonance layer: the off-axis maximum in the rotation profile is modestly higher for the HFS position. This is in contrast to the predictions of theories that rely mainly on the effects arising from ICRF-driven fast ions to account for ICRF-induced plasma rotation. The differences due to the direction of the antenna spectrum (co- or counter-) are small. A more central deposition of the ICRF power in L-mode and operation in H-mode both lead to more centrally peaked profiles, both in the co-direction. Strong MHD modes brake the rotation and lead to overall flat rotation profiles.

  • Hydration dynamics of human fingernails : An ellipsometric study
  • 2002
  • In: Physical Review E. ; 65
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We use spectroscopic ellipsometry to obtain the complex refractive index, (n) over tilde =n+ik, of human fingernails. By studying the change of (n) over tilde upon hydration and dehydration, we reveal three different time domains with typical time constants of 4, 150, and 3200 min. A simple model that takes into account the presence of one fast and one slow process is fully consistent with the observed hydration and dehydration dynamics. We attribute these processes to "free" water incorporated between the keratin filaments and water more tightly "bound" in keratin complexes, respectively. From our model we determine the hydration profiles of "free" and "bound" water during, both, hydration and dehydration.

  • Deletion of laminin-8 results in increased tumor neovascularization and metastasis in mice
  • 2004
  • In: Cancer Research. - 1538-7445 .- 0008-5472. ; 64:12, s. 4059-4063
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Laminin-8 (alpha4beta1gamma1) is one of the major laminin isoforms expressed in vascular endothelial basement membranes. Here we show that deletion of laminin-8 in mice affects angiogenesis under pathological conditions. Murine tumor models used in laminin alpha4-deficient mice results in hyperneovascularization and significant promotion of tumor growth and metastasis. The higher tumor growth rates in mutant mice correlate with decreased tumor cell apoptosis. Depletion of laminin alpha4 chain may alter the structure of vascular basement membranes, leading to increased angiogenesis. Our data suggest that the laminin-8 plays a critical role in the regulation of pathological angiogenesis.
