  • Alternatives to mainstream publishing within and beyond academia
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 21:4, s. 117-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For the 20-year anniversary of ephemera journal, we have invited eight collectives engaged in alternatives to mainstream publishing to tell us about the initiatives they are part of. The task of ephemera, in turn, has been to bring them together. In this forum the collectives introduce what they do, articulating their political commitments and organising principles, whilst not shying away from the challenges and limitations of their work. Together, they illuminate the politics and organisation of alternatives to mainstream publishing, giving a rich picture of what alternatives can look like. They also help us rethink what it means to be open (access).

  • Countering corporate violence: Degrowth, ecosocialism and organising beyond the destructive forces of capitalism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7323 .- 1350-5084. ; 28:3, s. 405-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corporate violence is a form of organised violence motivated or caused by material interest, profit-seeking or economic expansion. It is inflicted on human beings or ecosystems. Complementing a Marxist theoretical frame with literature on ecosocialism and degrowth, we examine how corporate violence is inherent to and has been consistently encouraged by the capitalist mode of production. By drawing on the concepts of primitive accumulation and social metabolism, we visibilise how such violence is manifested within the productive forces of capitalism – natural resources, labour, technology and money. Corporate violence, we argue, may only be countered in a post-capitalist society where the productive forces are radically transformed. We build on degrowth principles to articulate how corporate violence may be countered and how post-growth organising of productive forces may look.

  • Pasts, presents and futures of critical publishing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 21:4, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this 20-year anniversary editorial of ephemera, we discuss independent publishing by situating it in a changing academic landscape – one scarred by despair but also leavened by hope. Twenty years ago, the goal of publishing an open access peer-reviewed journal was a radical political gesture in itself. Today, the model of open access publishing has been appropriated, hollowed out, and commodified. This requires ephemera to reassess what it means to be an open access journal. We then discuss how theory is central to ephemera, raising questions about what theory is, how it is done, and by whom. This is followed by a reflection on how the journal is run and administered by the editorial collective – a topic that speaks directly to the theme of ‘theory and politics in organization’. Finally, we consider the relationships and boundaries between independent publishing and political activism.

  • Pasts, presents and futures of critical publishing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 21:4
  • Annan publikation (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This issue celebrates 20 years of ephemera. We, the editorial collective, feel this anniversary provides the opportunity to debate the pasts, presents and futures of critical publishing. Today, most academic journals are owned by commercial publishing houses and organized according to journal rankings and impact factors. Yet ephemera remains stubbornly independent of these global capitalist forces. In this anniversary issue, we want to raise questions about independence – independent thinking, independent publication, independent organizing. In doing so, we seek to position critical open access publishing as a vehicle for producing radiant ideas, inciting political action, exploring heterotopic spaces, and inventing alternative futures.
