  • Electroweak measurements in electron positron collisions at W-boson-pair energies at LEP

    • Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3 fb(-1) collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, 13 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 GeV to 209 GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant WW and ZZ production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in WW production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, m(w) and Gamma(w), the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B(W -> had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g(1)(Z), K-gamma and lambda(gamma), are determined to be: m(w) = 80.376 +/- 0.033 GeV Gamma(w) = 2.195 +/- 0.083 GeV B(W -> had) = 67.41 +/- 0.27% g(1)(Z) = 0.984(-0.020)(+0.018) K-gamma - 0.982 +/- 0.042 lambda(gamma) = 0.022 +/- 0.019.   • Overview of the JET results with the ITER-like wall

    • Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Z(eff) (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H-98,H-y2 close to 1 and beta(N) similar to 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential.

  • Overview of the JET results

    • Since the last IAEA Conference JET has been in operation for one year with a programmatic focus on the qualification of ITER operating scenarios, the consolidation of ITER design choices and preparation for plasma operation with the ITER-like wall presently being installed in JET. Good progress has been achieved, including stationary ELMy H-mode operation at 4.5 MA. The high confinement hybrid scenario has been extended to high triangularity, lower ρ*and to pulse lengths comparable to the resistive time. The steady-state scenario has also been extended to lower ρ*and ν*and optimized to simultaneously achieve, under stationary conditions, ITER-like values of all other relevant normalized parameters. A dedicated helium campaign has allowed key aspects of plasma control and H-mode operation for the ITER non-activated phase to be evaluated. Effective sawtooth control by fast ions has been demonstrated with3He minority ICRH, a scenario with negligible minority current drive. Edge localized mode (ELM) control studies using external n = 1 and n = 2 perturbation fields have found a resonance effect in ELM frequency for specific q95values. Complete ELM suppression has, however, not been observed, even with an edge Chirikov parameter larger than 1. Pellet ELM pacing has been demonstrated and the minimum pellet size needed to trigger an ELM has been estimated. For both natural and mitigated ELMs a broadening of the divertor ELM-wetted area with increasing ELM size has been found. In disruption studies with massive gas injection up to 50% of the thermal energy could be radiated before, and 20% during, the thermal quench. Halo currents could be reduced by 60% and, using argon/deuterium and neon/deuterium gas mixtures, runaway electron generation could be avoided. Most objectives of the ITER-like ICRH antenna have been demonstrated; matching with closely packed straps, ELM resilience, scattering matrix arc detection and operation at high power density (6.2 MW m-2) and antenna strap voltages (42 kV). Coupling measurements are in very good agreement with TOPICA modelling. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

  • Deuterium inventory in Tore Supra : Coupled carbon-deuterium balance

    • This paper presents an analysis of the carbon-deuterium circulation and the resulting balance in Tore Supra over the period 2002-2007. Carbon balance combines the estimation of carbon gross erosion from spectroscopy, net erosion and deposition using confocal microscopy, lock-in thermography and SEM, and a measure of the amount of deposits collected in the vacuum chamber. Fuel retention is determined from post-mortem (PM) analyses and gas balance (GB) measurements. Special attention was paid to the deuterium outgassed during the nights and weekends of the experimental campaign (vessel under vacuum, Plasma Facing Components at 120 degrees C) and during vents (vessel at atmospheric pressure, PFCs at room temperature). It is shown that this outgassing is the main process reconciling the PM and GB estimations of fuel retention, closing the coupled carbon-deuterium balance. In particular, it explains why the deuterium concentration in deposits decreases with increasing depth.

  • Design and validation of a trajectory estimation system for the Hayabusa sample return capsule

    • The Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft will return to Earth in summer, 2010, carrying samples from asteroid Itokawa. Because the sample return capsule will reenter the atmosphere at night, the capsule and surrounding air will appear as a bright light (i.e., "fireball") during the portion of the trajectory with high aerodynamic heating. Kyushu University, in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, is developing a ground-based optical sensor system to observe the reentry and estimate the vehicle's trajectory. This paper describes the design and validation currently underway for the proposed system, in preparation for operations in mid-2010. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used to estimate the capsule's position and velocity, as well as a scale factor on the atmospheric density. Simulations of the EKF show that the capsule's state at the end of the visible portion of the trajectory (i.e., at approximately 25 km altitude) can be estimated with a 1-s uncertainty of 60 m in position and 8 m/s in velocity.

  • Dust Particles in Controlled Fusion Devices: Generation Mechanism and Analysis

    • Generation and in-vessel accumulation of carbon and metal dust are perceived to be serious safety andeconomy issues for a steady-state operation of a fusion reactor, e.g. ITER. This contribution provides acomprehensive account on: (a) properties of carbon and metal dust formed in the TEXTOR tokamak; (b) dustgeneration associated with removal of fuel and co-deposit from carbon PFC from TEXTOR and Tore Supra; (c)surface morphology of wall components after different cleaning treatments. The amount of loose dust found on thefloor of the TEXTOR liner does not exceed 2 grams with particle size range 0.1 m – 1 mm. The presence of fine(up to 1 m) crystalline graphite in the collected matter suggests that brittle destruction of carbon PFC could takeplace during off-normal events. Carbon is the main component, but there are also magnetic and non-magnetic metalagglomerates. The fuel content in dust and co-deposits varies from 10% on the main limiters to 0.03% on theneutralizer plates. Fuel removal by oxidative methods or by annealing in vacuum disintegrates co-deposits and, in thecase of thick layers, makes them brittle thus reducing the adherence to the target. Also photonic cleaning by laserpulses produces debris, especially under ablation conditions. The results obtained strongly indicate that in a carbonwall machine the disintegration of flaking co-deposits on PFC is the main source of dust.

    • The efficiency of two methods for in-situ fuel removal has been tested on carbon and tungsten limiters retrieved from the TEXTOR and Tore Supra tokamaks: laser-inducedablation of co-deposits and annealing in vacuum at elevated temperature. The analyses of gas phase and surfaces performed with thermal desorption spectrometry, optical spectroscopy, ion beam analysis, surface profilometry and microscopy methods have shown: (i) the ablation leads to the generation of dust particles of 50 nm – 2μm; (ii) volatile products of ablation undergo condensation on surrounding surfaces; (iii) D/C ratio in such condensate is in the range 0.02-0.03; (iv) long-term annealing of 623 K for 70 hours results in release of not more ~10 % of deuterium accumulated in plasma-facing components; (v) effective removal is reached by heating to 900-1300 K.

  • Chemodiversity of dissolved organic matter in lakes driven by climate and hydrology

    • Despite the small continental coverage of lakes, they are hotspots of carbon cycling, largely due to the processing of terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). As DOM is an amalgam of heterogeneous compounds comprising gradients of microbial and physicochemical reactivity, the factors influencing DOM processing at the molecular level and the resulting patterns in DOM composition are not well understood. Here we show, using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry to unambiguously identify 4,032 molecular formulae in 120 lakes across Sweden, that the molecular composition of DOM is shaped by precipitation, water residence time and temperature. Terrestrially derived DOM is selectively lost as residence time increases, with warmer temperatures enhancing the production of nitrogen-containing compounds. Using biodiversity concepts, we show that the molecular diversity of DOM, or chemodiversity, increases with DOM and nutrient concentrations. The observed molecular-level patterns indicate that terrestrially derived DOM will become more prevalent in lakes as climate gets wetter.
