  • Neutron tagging following atmospheric neutrino events in a water Cherenkov detector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 17:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 +/- 9 mu s.

  • Recent advances in the modification of carbon-based quantum dots for biomedical applications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Materials science & engineering. C, biomimetic materials, sensors and systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 0928-4931 .- 1873-0191. ; 120
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon-based quantum dots (CDs) are mainly divided into two sub-groups; carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which exhibit outstanding photoluminescence (PL) properties, low toxicity, superior biocompatibility and facile functionalization. Regarding these features, they have been promising candidates for biomedical science and engineering applications. In this work, we reviewed the efforts made to modify these zero-dimensional nano-materials to obtain the best properties for bio-imaging, drug and gene delivery, cancer therapy, and bio-sensor applications. Five main surface modification techniques with outstanding results are investigated, including doping, surface functionalization, polymer capping, nano-composite and core-shell structures, and the drawbacks and challenges in each of these methods are discussed.

  • Phase 3 trial of human islet-after-kidney transplantation in type 1 diabetes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Transplantation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1600-6135 .- 1600-6143. ; 21:4, s. 1477-1492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Allogeneic islet transplant offers a minimally invasive option for beta cell replacement in the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The CIT consortium trial of purified human pancreatic islets (PHPI) in patients with T1D after kidney transplant (CIT06), a National Institutes of Health-sponsored phase 3, prospective, open-label, single-arm pivotal trial of PHPI, was conducted in 24 patients with impaired awareness of hypoglycemia while receiving intensive insulin therapy. PHPI were manufactured using standardized processes. PHPI transplantation was effective with 62.5% of patients achieving the primary endpoint of freedom from severe hypoglycemic events and HbA(1c) <= 6.5% or reduced by >= 1 percentage point at 1 year posttransplant. Median HbA(1c)declined from 8.1% before to 6.0% at 1 year and 6.3% at 2 and 3 years following transplant (P < .001 for all vs baseline), with related improvements in hypoglycemia awareness and glucose variability. The improved metabolic control was associated with better health-related and diabetes-related quality of life. The procedure was safe and kidney allograft function remained stable after 3 years. These results add to evidence establishing allogeneic islet transplant as a safe and effective treatment for patients with T1D and unstable glucose control despite intensive insulin treatment, supporting the indication for PHPI in the post-renal transplant setting.

  • Virtual planning of the anterolateral thigh free flap for heel reconstruction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Microsurgery. - : WILEY. - 0738-1085 .- 1098-2752. ; 42:5, s. 460-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose three dimensional (3-D) virtual planning is an example of computer assisted surgery that improved management of composite tissue defects. However, converting the 3-D construct into two dimensional format is challenging. The purpose of this study was to assess 3-D virtual planning of complex heel defects for better optimized reconstruction. Patients and methods a prospective analysis of 10 patients [9 male and 1 female; mean age = 27.9 years] with post-traumatic heel defects was performed. Heel defects comprised types II (three patients) or III (seven patients) according to Hidalgo and Shaw and were managed using anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap adopting 3-D virtual planning of the actual defect which was converted into a silicone two dimensional mold. The mean definitive size of the defects was 63.4 cm(3). Functional, aesthetic, and sensory evaluations of both donor and recipient sites were performed 1 year after surgery. Results Six patients received thinned ALT (mean size = 139 cm(3)) while four patients received musculofasciocutaneous ALT flap (mean size = 199 cm(3)). One flap exhibited partial skin flap necrosis. Another flap was salvaged after re-exploration secondary to venous congestion. The mean follow-up was 20.2 months. The Maryland foot score showed 4 excellent, 5 good, and 1 fair cases. The mean American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle hind foot scoring was 76.3 (range: 69-86). All patients regained their walking capability. Conclusions 3-D virtual planning of complex heel defects facilitates covering non-elliptical defects while harvesting a conventional elliptical flap with providing satisfactory functional outcomes and near-normal contour, volume, and sensibility.

  • Reorienting the West African craton in Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geology. - 0091-7613. ; 49:10, s. 1171-1176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The location of the West African craton (WAC) has been poorly constrained in the Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna (also known as Columbia). Previous Nuna reconstruction models suggested that the WAC was connected to Amazonia in a way similar to their relative position in Gondwana. By an integrated paleomagnetic and geochronological study of the Proterozoic mafic dikes in the Anti-Atlas Belt, Morocco, we provide two reliable paleomagnetic poles to test this connection. Incorporating our new poles with quality-filtered poles from the neighboring cratons of the WAC, we propose an inverted WAC-Amazonia connection, with the northern WAC attached to northeastern Amazonia, as well as a refined configuration of Nuna. Global large igneous province records also conform to our new reconstruction. The inverted WAC-Amazonia connection suggests a substantial change in their relative orientation from Nuna to Gondwana, providing an additional example of large-magnitude cumulative azimuthal rotations between adjacent continental blocks over supercontinental cycles.
