  • Dispersion of viable pig liver cells with collagenase
  • 1975
  • Ingår i: Life Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-0631 .- 0024-3205. ; 17:8, s. 1219-1225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Viable suspended hepatocytes were prepared from surgical biopsy specimens of pig and human liver by digestion with collagenase. Initial perfusion of the tissue through cannulated blood vessels with 0.5 mM EGTA followed by 0.2% collagenase gave the best results. 20−870 × 106 cells of which 60–95 % excluded trypan blue were obtained from 5–30 g pig liver pieces, while results with human liver specimens were usually less satisfactory. In some experiments, however, viable cells, as judged by vital stain exclusion and ability to synthesize lipids were obtained in sufficient yield. In the pig hepatocytes glycerolipid synthesis from [3H] glycerol and oxidation and esterification of [14C] oleic acid had the same characteristics as those observed earlier in rat hepatocytes.

  • Om lingvistisk relativitet.
  • 1972
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the so-called Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (=our language inflyences our conception of reality) as a point of departure we discuss in this essay some possible meanings of "linguistic relativity". We start with a very brief outline of the historical development of the thesis, and in the third chapter we try to interpret the meaning of Sapir´s and Whorf´s vague formulations of the idea; we arrive at the conclusion that it is not one but several hypotheses, with consequences on both a perceptual and a conceptual or cognitive level, and that on must precise and delimit the theme in order to formulate a testable scientific hypothesis. In the fourt chapter we consider a systematization of the hypothesis into four different levels, and in this connexion we also discuss some experiments that have been carried out in order to verify the hypothesis. One of the consequences of this systematization is that it is important not only to show potential "Whorfian" effects" but also to show the degree and the extent of these effects in relation to other factors that may affect cognitive processes. In the fifth chapter, lastly, we look at the problem from broader perspective, and we emphasize that it is inadequate with a static approach; we mean that a more dynamic approach is necessary. Moreover, the hypothesis is mostly interpreted in terms of physical phenomena, but we consider it more important to treat social phenomena - the essential effects of the idea appear in the social field.

  • Baroreceptor-induced decrease in muscle blood flow upon propranolol administration.
  • 1978
  • Ingår i: European journal of pharmacology. - 0014-2999. ; 50:3, s. 275-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The acute effects of propranolol, 1 mg/kg i.v., were studied in chloralosed, vagotomized cats. The vascularly isolated but innervated calf muscles were perfused from another animal. In one group of experiments, the carotid baroreceptors were exposed to ambient arterial pressure. Here, propranolol caused a fall in heart rate and an increase in resistance of the isolated muscle bed. In other experiments, the carotid sinuses were perfused at a constant pressure. In these animals, no increase in muscle flow resistance was observed after the drug. It is concluded that the increase in total peripheral resistance, seen initially upon propranolol administration, may be reflexly induced via the baroreceptors.
