  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts

    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

    • Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems have entered the stage of commercial deployment, providing users with new services, improved user experiences as well as a host of novel opportunities to various industries. However, 5G still faces many challenges. To address these challenges, international industrial, academic, and standards organizations have commenced research on sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. A series of white papers and survey papers have been published, which aim to define 6G in terms of requirements, application scenarios, key technologies, etc. Although ITU-R has been working on the 6G vision and it is expected to reach a consensus on what 6G will be by mid-2023, the related global discussions are still wide open and the existing literature has identified numerous open issues. This paper first provides a comprehensive portrayal of the 6G vision, technical requirements, and application scenarios, covering the current common understanding of 6G. Then, a critical appraisal of the 6G network architecture and key technologies is presented. Furthermore, existing testbeds and advanced 6G verification platforms are detailed for the first time. In addition, future research directions and open challenges are identified to stimulate the on-going global debate. Finally, lessons learned to date concerning 6G networks are discussed.

  • Transcriptional and metabolic rewiring of colorectal cancer cells expressing the oncogenic KRAS(G13D) mutation

    • BACKGROUND: Activating mutations in KRAS frequently occur in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, leading to resistance to EGFRtargeted therapies. METHODS: To better understand the cellular reprogramming which occurs in mutant KRAS cells, we have undertaken a systems-level analysis of four CRC cell lines which express either wild type (wt) KRAS or the oncogenic KRAS(G13D) allele (mtKRAS). RESULTS: RNAseq revealed that genes involved in ribosome biogenesis, mRNA translation and metabolism were significantly upregulated in mtKRAS cells. Consistent with the transcriptional data, protein synthesis and cell proliferation were significantly higher in the mtKRAS cells. Targeted metabolomics analysis also confirmed the metabolic reprogramming in mtKRAS cells. Interestingly, mtKRAS cells were highly transcriptionally responsive to EGFR activation by TGF alpha stimulation, which was associated with an unexpected downregulation of genes involved in a range of anabolic processes. While TGF alpha treatment strongly activated protein synthesis in wtKRAS cells, protein synthesis was not activated above basal levels in the TGF alpha-treated mtKRAS cells. This was likely due to the defective activation of the mTORC1 and other pathways by TGF alpha in mtKRAS cells, which was associated with impaired activation of PKB signalling and a transient induction of AMPK signalling. CONCLUSIONS: We have found that mtKRAS cells are substantially rewired at the transcriptional, translational and metabolic levels and that this rewiring may reveal new vulnerabilities in oncogenic KRAS CRC cells that could be exploited in future.

  • In-depth purification of spent pot-lining by oxidation-expansion acid leaching: A comparative study

    • Spent pot lining (SPL) is a hazardous solid waste generated after overhauling the aluminum electrolytic cell. SPL contains carbon resources with high graphitization and toxic impurities, such as NaF, Na3AlF6, and CaF2. These toxic substances are difficult to remove from graphite completely. This study introduces an innovative method of oxidation-expansion acid leaching (OEAL) to eliminate impurities inside the graphitized carbon. For such a purpose, typical purification methods (conventional leaching, flotation-acid leaching) were investigated and compared to OEAL. The experimental outcomes indicated that the process efficiency for removing SPL impurities by various methods had the following sequence from high to low: OEAL > flotation-acid leaching > conventional leaching. The maximum SPL impurities removal rate by conventional leaching and flotation-acid leaching was 89.65 %, while it was 99.36 % with the OEAL method. For understanding fundamental aspects of the SPL impurity removal, their rejection mechanisms in the examined methods were systematically studied by different instrumentals and chemical analysis techniques. As a result of the reaction between H+ and residuals during OEAL process, the distance between graphitized carbon layers expands. This expansion resulted in a qualitative improvement in the SPL impurity removal by OEAL, making SPL one of the graphite or graphene oxide resources.

    • Diverse means have been deployed for harvesting electrical energy from mechanical actuation produced by low-grade waste heat, but cycle rate, energy-per-cycle, device size and weight, or cost have limited applications. We report the electromagnetic harvesting of thermal energy as electrical energy using thermally powered torsional and tensile artificial muscles made from inexpensive polymer fibers used for fishing line and sewing thread. We show that a coiled 27 μm-diameter nylon muscle fiber can be driven by 16.7 °C air temperature fluctuations to spin a magnetic rotor to a peak torsional rotation speed of 70 000 rpm for over 300 000 heating–cooling cycles without performance degradation. By employing resonant fluctuations in air temperature of 19.6 °C, an average output electrical power of 124 W per kg of muscle was realized. Using tensile actuation of polyethylene-based coiled muscles and alternating flows of hot and cold water, up to 1.4 J of electrical energy was produced per cycle. The corresponding per cycle electric energy and peak power output, per muscle weight, were 77 J kg−1 and 28 W kg−1, respectively.

  • Multiple ancestral haplotypes harboring regulatory mutations cumulatively contribute to a QTL affecting chicken growth traits

    • In depth studies of quantitative trait loci (QTL) can provide insights to the genetic architectures of complex traits. A major effect QTL at the distal end of chicken chromosome 1 has been associated with growth traits in multiple populations. This locus was fine-mapped in a fifteen-generation chicken advanced intercross population including 1119 birds and explored in further detail using 222 sequenced genomes from 10 high/low body weight chicken stocks. We detected this QTL that, in total, contributed 14.4% of the genetic variance for growth. Further, nine mosaic precise intervals (Kb level) which contain ancestral regulatory variants were fine-mapped and we chose one of them to demonstrate the key regulatory role in the duodenum. This is the first study to break down the detail genetic architectures for the well-known QTL in chicken and provides a good example of the fine-mapping of various of quantitative traits in any species. Yuzhe Wang, Xuemin Cao et al. report the fine-mapping of a major growth trait QTL in chicken using genome-wide association and haplotype association analyses. They discover multiple mutations cumulatively contribute to the previously-reported QTL and identify one of a regulatory mutation that contributes to the variation in the measured traits.
