  • Variety in founder experience and the performance of knowledge-intensive innovative firms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of evolutionary economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0936-9937 .- 1432-1386. ; 31:2, s. 677-713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article contributes with an analysis of the specific linkages between knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship for industrial dynamics, within the emerging literature upon knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurial (KIE) firms. We find a distinct variety in the usefulness of different types of founder experience (single or teams) in the performance of entrepreneurial firms. This variety affects selection in the economy, as measured by the performance of firms in a two-stage process – namely first by analyzing survival over time and then of high growth rates. We do so in order to consider averages/probabilities in the population using Cox regression as well as of the outliers, using quantile regression. We find that on one hand, founders having previously started firms or worked in the same industry are more likely to survive. On the other hand, very high-growth firms have founders who previously started firms or worked in universities. Combining different types of founder experience in KIE firms has a consistently positive relationship with performance both in terms of survival and of growth. Our interpretation is that the variety of founder experience affect selection processes and opportunity recognition in KIE firms and thereby fundamentally affect whether, and to what extent, entrepreneurial actions lead to industrial transformation.

  • Exploring How the University Ecosystem Can Mobilise Resources for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurial Firms in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Entrepreneurship. - 1942-0676 .- 1942-0684.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social innovation and entrepreneurship are argued to be crucial for enabling inclusive and sustainable transformation. However, we know less about how universities can enable social innovation and entrepreneurship amongst students and employees. This article explores one specific channel for university impact - supporting knowledge-intensive entrepreneurs (KIE) in delivering social innovation as services. We conduct a theoretically informed case study at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, analysing one firm started by alumni and one firm started by employed researchers. We propose a conceptual framework, explicating how social KIE entrepreneurs mobilise resources from the university in knowledge-intensive services of social impact.

  • Organising an early phase of academic engagement: a case study of interactions between engineering and equestrian sports
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Innovation: Organization & Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1447-9338 .- 2204-0226. ; 23:2, s. 266-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the underlying processes of initiating academic engagement, seen from the university perspective. We do so through a longitudinal case study, of the university, Chalmers, and specifically around the engineering subjects, and the development of such relationships with a sector with few such traditions, namely equestrian sports. In terms of how the chosen university has worked to initiate academic engagement, we find, in contrast to existing literature, how, what we call researcher-teachers, primarily used students to engage with a variety of external organisations, rather than relying on research excellence. University management offered support and made small investments. In terms of perceived benefits, the researcher-teachers, university managers and students all stressed positive reputational benefits, especially attracting female students into engineering and diffusing engineering knowledge in society. Acknowledging the limitations of our study, three propositions for future research are to conceptualise the university as providing knowledge-intensive services, to explore the potential involvement of university management, and to articulate different phases of academic engagement.

  • Conceptualizing evolutionary governance routines: governance at the interface of science and technology with knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Evolutionary Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0936-9937 .- 1432-1386. ; 30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019, The Author(s). The two main purposes of this article are: 1) To propose a conceptual model for governance at the interface of science and technology with knowledge-intensive innovative entrepreneurship and 2) To develop propositions and propose a future research agenda on evolutionary governance routines. Our proposed conceptualization of governance depends upon an understanding of how different ways of developing rules and norms to interact and make decisions collectively are created and maintained, including two sub-processes. One process is to develop advanced knowledge and the second process is where entrepreneurs transform that knowledge developed as the public good and privatize it through value creation. We propose that a main task for this type of entrepreneur is to manage their engagement in the overall governance in such a way as to be perceived by others as continuing to contribute to the collective action problem. The article provides definitions and propositions in relation to the conceptualization, as well as interesting trajectories for future research.

  • BUILDING REGIONAL INNOVATION CAPACITY: LINKING KNOWLEDGE-INTENSIVE INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION GOVERNANCE
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - 1476-1297. ; 42:1/2, s. 27-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the processes of building innovation capacity, within a regional innovation sys-tem. We analyse a case study of technological development in a region, leading us to propose a con-ceptual model to explain how and why the development of a common resource pool of scientific and technological knowledge in turn leads to regional innovation capacity. The model visualizes our prop-osition that a process of governance enables actors to exploit a set of regional resources (incentives, networks, global relations), whereby collectively creating industrial opportunities.. We thereby use the model to predict that the success and directionality of specific technology in the region is dependent on establishing an organizational structure for exploiting said resources collectively. This contributes to understanding the governance of innovation systems because our proposed organizational structure, once established, will protect and channel knowledge and resources to the heterogeneous participating actors.

  • Strategic choices in the design of entrepreneurship education: an explorative study of Swedish higher education institutions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 46:2, s. 343-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes a taxonomy of entrepreneurship education, with the aim of enhancing our understanding of how higher education contributes to society. Entrepreneurship education programs have become a prominent feature in the curricula of many universities and business schools. Often it is developed in parallel with national policy, as described for our empirical context of Sweden. We identify four types using broad principles in terms of four different key variables described within. To identify our proposed types, we perform a cluster analysis of all 37 universities with entrepreneurship educations in one country. Previous literature provides mixed evidence about entrepreneurship programs’ effect on the likelihood of alumni starting a business afterwards. Our contribution is to specify this taxonomy through broad principles, leading to interesting questions about the competing goals between theory and practice in learning outcomes. We conclude with suggested directions for future research and implications for higher education policy.
