Becoming a rock band : The challenges of group identity

- Rock bands feature increasingly in music education. They are essential parts of popular culture and are increasingly highlighted as entrepreneurial organizations in a global music industry. However, to develop and stay together as a band is a difficult task. This study aims to develop an understanding of the challenges of becoming a rock band, shedding new light on previously underexplored complexities of band life by considering the impact of group identities. The methodology entails storytelling and identity work, inspired by a biographical approach. Six explorative interviews with band members were conducted. The results suggest that productive activities form several kinds of work group identities, whereas low-activity periods threaten group identification. The article discusses how diversity of group identities promotes development while uniformity promotes stability. To cope with this paradox, this article suggests that band members ought to learn to develop multiple group identities and flexible ways of relating to one another.

- This paper describes trade-offs involved in designing a dual-band CMOS frontend for wireless local-area network (WLAN). Three 0.18μm CMOS frontends have been investigated, a single-band frontend at the 2.4 GHz ISM band, a single-band frontend at the 5 GHz U-NII band and a dual-band frontend. The study shows that employing a dual-band frontend yields satisfactory results, although some compromises regarding the performance in the lower frequency band have to be made

- A 3-D Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) with band-stop characteristics for X-band and Ku-band is proposed. A 3-D FSS unit cell is constructed by analyzing two 2-D FSS's. The size of the 3-D FSS unit cell is 5 mm × 5 mm wherein two layers of FR4 substrate with respective widths of 0.762 mm and 0.5 mm are used. Dual stop bands are obtained with this FSS unit cell around 10 GHz and 17.4 GHz; where a wide stop-band of 5.2 GHz is obtained. The parametric study carried out on the proposed design in terms change in nature of substrate, alternate use of different substrates and variation in angle of incidence. The 3-D FSS shows its band rejection property X-band and Ku-band respectively. Ansoft HFSS commercial EM solver software is used to carry out the simulation work.

- Zinc oxide-polyethylene nanocomposites have a potential to be used for high voltage insulation. Here, we investigate electronic properties of zinc oxide-polyethylene interface using density functional theory. Interface states up to 1 eV below conduction band edge are found in polyethylene. Our results suggest that the energy bands of ZnO and polyethylene align to comply with vacuum level equality. We use our findings to establish mechanisms of band alignment at the interfaces between polyethylene and crystal materials.

- In this paper, band stop filters using Fractal Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) approach for X-band and Ku-band applications are presented. A 10 mm χ 10 mm FSS unit cell is used and is evolved into four stages to get the fractal approach. Numerical results are calculated using Finite element method solver for electromagnetic structures from Ansys ie. HFSS. The transmission coefficients for each stage confirm the band stop filter property of FSS for X-band and Ku-band. Variation in arm length 'd' is studied both in horizontal and vertical direction respectively to calculate the change in narrow bands and bandwidth.

The synergy with Fermi's Gamma-ray Burst Monitor detectors will link these observations to those in the well explored 10-1000 keV range; the addition of the > 100 MeV band observations will resolve theoretical uncertainties about burst emission in both the prompt and afterglow phases. Trigger algorithms will be applied to the LAT data both onboard the spacecraft and on the ground. The sensitivity of these triggers will differ because of the available computing resources onboard and on the ground. Here we present the LAT's burst detection methodologies and the instrument's GRB capabilities.

- A dual-band polarizer is presented that converts linear polarization into circular polarization with orthogonal handedness in the satcom bands 19.7-20.2 GHz and 29.5-30 GHz. The polarizer consists of three identical cascaded perforated metallic screens, whose perforations are periodically repeated crosses of two sizes. Unlike previously reported dual-band polarizers, our design is fully metallic, which results in low losses and makes it suitable for space applications. A prototype of the polarizer with 20 x 20 unit cells is manufactured, and the measurement results agree well with the simulated results. In the nominal satcom bands, the measured axial ratio and the insertion loss are better than 1.7 and 0.67 dB. In the bands 18.9-20.3 GHz and 29.1-30.1 GHz, the measured axial ratio and insertion loss are below 3 and 1 dB.
