  • Dose point kernels in liquid water : An intra-comparison between GEANT4-DNA and a variety of Monte Carlo codes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Radiation and Isotopes. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-8043 .- 1872-9800. ; 83, s. 137-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modeling the radio-induced effects in biological medium still requires accurate physics models to describe the interactions induced by all the charged particles present in the irradiated medium in detail. These interactions include inelastic as well as elastic processes. To check the accuracy of the very low energy models recently implemented into the GEANT4 toolkit for modeling the electron slowing-down in liquid water, the simulation of electron dose point kernels remains the preferential test. In this context, we here report normalized radial dose profiles, for mono-energetic point sources, computed in liquid water by using the very low energy GEANT4-DNA physics processes available in the GEANT4 toolkit. In the present study, we report an extensive intra-comparison of profiles obtained by a large selection of existing and well-documented Monte-Carlo codes, namely, EGSnrc, PENELOPE, CPA100, FLUKA and MCNPX.

    • This chapter focuses on how the engaging and entertaining medium of virtual reality and serious games has the potential to connect traditional galleries, libraries, archives, and museum (GLAM) sector organizations with contemporary audiences by blending old traditions and new technologies. Following a short definition of virtual reality, we discuss the relevance and increasing intersecting importance of virtual heritage and serious games, especially those dealing with topics and issues in art history. We suggest that while the majority of studies deal with physical or digital maintenance and display of art-historical objects; public engagement can further be achieved with the aid of participatory, sensory, and interactive platforms.

  • Comparative genomic characterization of Francisella tularensis strains belonging to low and high virulence subspecies
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PLoS pathogens. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7374. ; 5:5, s. e1000459-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tularemia is a geographically widespread, severely debilitating, and occasionally lethal disease in humans. It is caused by infection by a gram-negative bacterium, Francisella tularensis. In order to better understand its potency as an etiological agent as well as its potential as a biological weapon, we have completed draft assemblies and report the first complete genomic characterization of five strains belonging to the following different Francisella subspecies (subsp.): the F. tularensis subsp. tularensis FSC033, F. tularensis subsp. holarctica FSC257 and FSC022, and F. tularensis subsp. novicida GA99-3548 and GA99-3549 strains. Here, we report the sequencing of these strains and comparative genomic analysis with recently available public Francisella sequences, including the rare F. tularensis subsp. mediasiatica FSC147 strain isolate from the Central Asian Region. We report evidence for the occurrence of large-scale rearrangement events in strains of the holarctica subspecies, supporting previous proposals that further phylogenetic subdivisions of the Type B clade are likely. We also find a significant enrichment of disrupted or absent ORFs proximal to predicted breakpoints in the FSC022 strain, including a genetic component of the Type I restriction-modification defense system. Many of the pseudogenes identified are also disrupted in the closely related rarely human pathogenic F. tularensis subsp. mediasiatica FSC147 strain, including modulator of drug activity B (mdaB) (FTT0961), which encodes a known NADPH quinone reductase involved in oxidative stress resistance. We have also identified genes exhibiting sequence similarity to effectors of the Type III (T3SS) and components of the Type IV secretion systems (T4SS). One of the genes, msrA2 (FTT1797c), is disrupted in F. tularensis subsp. mediasiatica and has recently been shown to mediate bacterial pathogen survival in host organisms. Our findings suggest that in addition to the duplication of the Francisella Pathogenicity Island, and acquisition of individual loci, adaptation by gene loss in the more recently emerged tularensis, holarctica, and mediasiatica subspecies occurred and was distinct from evolutionary events that differentiated these subspecies, and the novicida subspecies, from a common ancestor. Our findings are applicable to future studies focused on variations in Francisella subspecies pathogenesis, and of broader interest to studies of genomic pathoadaptation in bacteria.

  • In the beginning was the (Written) word - Peter Ackroyd's 'Hawksmoor' as a myth of creation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Orbis Litterarum. - 0105-7510 .- 1600-0730. ; 63:1, s. 22-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A pivotal text within Peter Ackroyd's oeuvre, Hawksmoor is most fruitfully read as a kind of mythography where a special version of deconstructive play dominates all levels of the fiction, from single words through characters and action to the level of meta-reflection itself. In fact, the novel's design can be said to reflect the philosophy of space of the eighteenth-century architect Nicholas Dyer: his seven churches are embodiments of differance, subtly infusing alterior knowledge into urban reality. Similarly, Hawksmoor's ''vision-house of language,'' its post-structuralist myth, advocates the post-1968 Derridean/Deleuzean enterprise of reterritorialization - of reconnecting the uprooted postmodern subject to estranged territory. At the base of this myth, mobilizing it as its non-originary source, as the exemplary figure of the trace, is the child, the spatial thinker in the novel; by folding language into the city of London, the Derridean child imagines the permeable bounds between building/dwelling/thinking, encouraging individuals to transgress them and, in Ackroyd's words, to re-situate themselves in ''the riddle of London, which is perpetually new and always old.''
