- Article omission is a well-documented phenomenon in early child speech. Interestingly, children differ in terms of how extensively they omit articles depending on their age and what language(s) they are exposed to. Different accounts have been proposed to account for this cross-linguistic variation. One of the most widely discussed models is the Nominal Mapping Parameter (NMP), originally proposed in Chierchia (1998), which relates variation in child language to the syntactic and semantic properties of noun phrases across languages (e.g. Chierchia, Guasti and Gualmini 1999, Guasti and Gavarró 2003, Guasti et al. 2004). Other influential accounts of determiner omission have been formulated in prosody-oriented research (e.g. Gerken 1991, 1994, Lleó 1998, 2001, Lleó and Demuth 1999, Roark and Demuth 2000, Demuth et al., in press). So far, no common agreement has been reached.This paper presents a study on article acquisition in English, German, Norwegian and Swedish, where article use is subject to similar syntactic and semantic conditions. Hence, the NMP predicts similar acquisition patterns. In terms of their metrical structure, noun phrases in these languages differ considerably. Accordingly, different acquisition patterns are expected.

- (Preface) This conference focused on the core of Bakhtin’s theory, which concerns dialogue and dialogicality. The conference themes reflected his notion that the “I” and the “self”, the “you” and the “other” are embedded in each other so that each affects the other and as a whole they create a centrifugal force around which communication and life circle. The choice of the two-faced Janus figure as the symbol of the conference reflects the inward and outward aspects of communication’s inherent dialogue and dialogicality. As an ancient Roman god of beginnings and doorways, of the rising and setting sun, looking in opposite directions, Janus has been associated with polarities, that is, seeing different and contrasting aspects and characteristics. As a metaphor it describes Bakhtin’s view on dialogues and dialogicality within or between “selves” and “others”. As a metaphorical symbol it captured the intent, purpose and outcome of the conference as reflected in this collection of papers.

- This article evaluates a method of frequency-based retrieval of translation-specific linguistic surface patterning on the basis of two pilot corpus studies of fiction translated from English into Swedish. The focus of the article is on the relevance of different methods for corpus research on source language transfer, necessary grammatical adaptation, and translation strategies conditioned by non-imperative cross-linguistic factors. The two studies, which started from overrepresentation of grammatical words, indicated that the overall distribution differences are related to register differences, source language transfer due to cross-linguistic compatibility, and grammatical adaptation due to target language syntactic restrictions. It is hypothesized that the method used will be suitable primarily for cross-linguistic textual and register-oriented study as well as for the study of necessary adaptations to target language grammatical restrictions. On the basis of this hypothesis, it is suggested that the search for translation corpus patterning indicative of other features than these will benefit from a more theory-driven orientation, although semi-automatic corpus markup is likely to play an important part in the development of new theories and methods.

- This paper discusses in what sense an over-represented multi-word pattern in a corpus of translated texts can be said to be typical of translated text. The purpose of the discussion is to assess, from a quantitative as well as from a qualitative perspective, the status of translational collocation data retrieved through data-driven methods from a comparable and parallel aligned corpus of English and Swedish original and translated texts. The study focuses on the explicitation of clausal relations in translations from English into Swedish. In some cases, lexical and grammatical contrast lead to explicitation, but in others explicitation is due to different factors.

- This paper reports on an investigation of the Swedish grammatical word av (‘of’, ‘by’), which is overrepresented in Swedish fiction translations from English in relation to Swedish non-translated fiction texts in the comparable part of The English-Swedish Parallel Corpus (ESPC). The study also incorporated the most significantly overrepresented collocational patterns involving av. Through the investigation it became clear that the overrepresentation of av is general and significant, and that there is also significant overrepresentation of associated patterns involving lexical as well as grammatical words. The study further indicated that the patterns are mainly due to source language transfer.
