  • Moving toward a circular economy in manufacturing organizations : the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0957-4093. ; 34:3, s. 674-698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe circular economy (CE) approach has been acknowledged as key for manufacturing organizations wishing to overcome sustainability challenges. However, the transition has been slow. Stakeholder engagement is a driver of the transition, but there is limited knowledge on stakeholder engagement practices in a CE context. The purpose of this paper is thus to explore with whom, on what and how organizations engage with stakeholders to implement CE as part of sustainability efforts.Design/methodology/approachThis study is situated at the intersection of CE, stakeholder theory and supply chain literature. A case study with three Swedish manufacturing organizations was conducted to explore stakeholder engagement practices that facilitate the implementation of CE in organizational practice and the supply chain, considering conceptual differences between stakeholder engagement for sustainability and CE.FindingsThis study provides empirical evidence on how manufacturing organizations engage stakeholders to implement CE as part of organizations' sustainability efforts. The study highlights that manufacturing organizations have to move not only from linear to circular resource flows, but also from linear to circular stakeholder engagement. Such engagement can be achieved by extending with whom, expanding on what and leveling up how stakeholders are engaged.Originality/valueThis study provides an enhanced conceptual understanding of stakeholder engagement in the CE context and discusses differences regarding stakeholder engagement based on linear thinking. The study emphasizes the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices for the transition toward CE in manufacturing organizations.

  • Stakeholder interaction for sustainability in seaports : Analysing the implementation and its linkages to overarching interaction efforts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Business Review. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0955-534X .- 1758-7107. ; 33:5, s. 693-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to analyse how and to what extent stakeholder interaction for sustainability is implemented in organisations and the linkages to the overarching interaction efforts.Design/methodology/approach: This study was conducted in the context of seaports. To examine interaction activities with stakeholders for sustainability and how they are implemented, the study uses content analysis of sustainability reports.Findings: The results show that the majority of ports recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction to create value and guide organisational sustainability; however, it is implemented to varying levels and degrees, which affects the form and extent of the overarching interaction efforts. The paper proposes four categories of implementing stakeholder interaction, showing the linkages to the number of stakeholder groups involved, sustainability dimensions covered and interaction approaches used.Originality/value: This paper contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and management literature by highlighting different levels of implementation of stakeholder interaction for sustainability and its linkages to overarching efforts that may affect the sustainable development of an organisation. The results of this study provide a better understanding of stakeholder interaction within organisational sustainability approaches and implementation in sustainability-oriented business models. As organisations seek to increase their sustainability performance, these insights may be useful for both academia and practice.

  • Walking old paths with new perspectives. Stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Stakeholder engagement has been recognised as one of the main principles for organisational sustainability. However, there is only limited knowledge on the role of stakeholder engagement in evolving organisational sustainability approaches such as sustainable business models (SBM) and circular economy (CE). There is also only fragmented research on how organisations engage with stakeholders and how the engagement needs to be adapted to facilitate the transition to SBMs and CE in relation to existing sustainability approaches focused on organisational sustainability practices (OSP). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to enhance knowledge on stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability, considering the role, practices and potential to facilitate transitions to SBMs and CE in relation to OSP.Three research questions drive this thesis which compiles five papers based on four individual studies. The first and the second study concentrate on how organisations engage with stakeholders for OSP and SBM, applying quantitative and qualitative methods respectively. The third study analyses the role of stakeholder engagement in SBMs, using a systematic literature review. The fourth study explores how stakeholder engagement needs to be adapted for SBMs and CE in relation to OSP, using qualitative methods. The results reveal the multi-faceted role of stakeholder engagement in SBMs and CE. Engagement practices for SBMs are dependent on the focus and intended outcome, while engagement for CE was extended and levelled up in relation to engagement for OSP. Continuous and changing engagement practices are needed to facilitate the transition to SBMs, and the conceptual understanding of stakeholder engagement from linear to circular needs to be adapted for CE transitions. This thesis contributes to sustainability, stakeholder, business model and CE literature by providing new perspectives on the role, extent, and form of stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability. For practitioners, insights are offered on how to foster stakeholder engagement and with that move towards organisational sustainability.

  • Exploring the role of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and sustainable business models
  • 2021
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Stakeholder interaction has been recognised as one of the main principles to advance organisational sustainability. However, there is only limited knowledge on how organisations interact with their stakeholders to develop sustainability practices from an overarching perspective. There is also only fragmented research on the role of stakeholders when developing a sustainable business model (SBM). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to explore the role of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and SBMs.Three research questions drive this thesis which compiles three papers based on three individual studies. The first study concentrates on stakeholder interaction as an organisational sustainability practice applying quantitative methods. The second study is a systematic literature review analysing the role of stakeholder interaction to develop SBMs. The third study explores how organisations implemented stakeholder interaction efforts, using qualitative methods. The results reveal that stakeholder interaction implemented as organisational sustainability practices and part of the SBM includes multiple stakeholders and different interaction degrees, potentially leading to new value opportunities and virtuous cycles of sustainable value creation. However, while organisations recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction, most organisations focus on low-to medium interaction degrees related to specific sustainability activities. This may limits the potential of stakeholder interaction for developing organisational sustainability practices and SBMs.This thesis contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and SBM literature by systematically exploring the role of stakeholder interaction, highlighting different degrees and extents practices are implemented in organisations. For practitioners, insights are offered how to foster stakeholder interaction practices and with that move towards organisational sustainability.

  • Blockchain innovation ecosystems orchestration in construction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 123:2, s. 672-694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Rapid advancements in blockchain technology transform various sectors, attracting the attention of industrialists, practitioners, policymakers and academics, and profoundly affect construction businesses through smart contracts and crypto-economics. This paper explores the blockchain innovation ecosystem in construction. Design/methodology/approach: Through a qualitative study of 23 diverse interviewees, the study explores how open or closed the blockchain innovation ecosystem in construction is and who its emerging orchestrators are. Findings: The data showed that construction aims towards an open innovation blockchain ecosystem, although there are elements of hybridisation and closedness, each system pointing out to different orchestrators. Practical implications: The study has implications for governments and large companies in construction, showing that open innovation initiatives need to be encouraged by policymakers through rules, regulations and government-sponsored demonstrator projects. Social implications: The data showed that there is lack of readiness for business model change to support open innovation blockchain ecosystems in construction. Originality/value: This is the first study applying the open innovation theory in the construction industry and sheds light into the phenomenon of blockchain, suggesting routes for further democratisation of the technology for policymakers and practitioners.

  • Automatic generation of fuzzy inference rules in a reshoring decision context
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Operations and Supply Chain Management, Vietnam, 2019. - : OSCM. - 9786027060470
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a decision-support system for reshoring decision-making based on fuzzy logic. The construction and functionality of the decision-support system is briefly outlined and evaluated in a highcost environment contemplating six specific decision criteria, namely cost, quality, time, flexibility, innovation and sustainability. A major challenge with fuzzy logic solutions has to do with the construction of the fuzzy inference rules. In the relocation domain, the fuzzy inference rules represent the knowledge and competence of relocation experts and they are usually created manually by the same experts. One obstacle is that the complexity of the fuzzy inference rules increases with the number of decision criteria. To overcome this complexity issue, this paper presents a solution whereby the fuzzy inference rules are automatically generated by applying one hundred reshoring scenarios as input data. The reshoring decision recommendations produced by the fuzzy logic decision-support system are demonstrated to be close to those of human reshoring domain experts.

  • Reshoring decision support in a Swedish context
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a decision-support system for reshoring decision-making based on fuzzy logic. The construction and functionality of the decision-support system are described, and the functionality is evaluated in a high cost environment exemplified through a Swedish context. Ten different reshoring scenarios, provided by Swedish reshoring experts, are entered into the decision-support system and the decision recommendations provided by the system are presented. The confidence that can be put on the recommendations is demonstrated by comparing them with those of the reshoring experts. The positive results obtained indicate that fuzzy logic is both feasible and that the quality of the results are sufficiently good for reshoring decision-making.
