  • Degrees of intersectionality : Male rap artists in Sweden negotiating class, race and gender
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525 .- 2000-1525. ; 5, s. 189-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Intersectionality” has become a highly influential concept in gender research over the last 25 years. Debates have focused on differences and power asymmetries between women, in terms of race but also addressing class, age, sexuality, ability and nation. However, intersectional paradigms have been used to a much lesser extent in gender studies on men. This article seeks to contribute to an emerging discussion about intersectionality and masculinity by analyzing rap lyrics in Swe-dish songs. The data consists of a broad sample of rap lyrics by male artists 1991-2011, which is analyzed through poststructuralist discourse analysis and queer phenomenology. The analysis shows how classed discourses can be described in terms of orientation and flow, how racialization is articulated in terms of place, and the role of normative notions of gender and sexuality in anti-racist discourses. It is argued that this interconnectedness – class being related to race, which in turn is profoundly gendered – is neither well captured by the prevailing notion of “masculinities” in gender studies on men, nor by the “constitution” vs. “addition” dichotomy in intersectionality debates. Instead, it is suggested that degrees of in-tersectionality might be a more fruitful way of theorizing intersectionality in rela-tion to men.

  • Is everything compatible? A feminist critique of Hearn's composite approach to men and masculinity
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Australian feminist studies (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0816-4649 .- 1465-3303. ; 33:97, s. 331-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since its emergence in the late 1980s, research on men and masculinity has expanded considerably into an established area at the intersection of sociology, gender studies and related disciplines. There is now a wealth of empirical research but the theoretical debates have largely centred on Connell’s notion of hegemonic masculinity. This article focuses instead on the theoretical contribution of Jeff Hearn, arguably one of the central figures within critical studies on men and masculinities over the last few decades. The article identifies the main tenets of Hearn’s theoretical writing and tracks its development over time, and offers a critical discussion of Hearn’s theoretical position. The critique focuses on ambiguous treatments of central concepts and argues that tensions between perspectives such as materialist analysis, queer theory and intersectionality are not fully acknowledged in Hearn’s work.

  • Sticky masculinity : Post-structuralism, phenomenology and subjectivity in critical studies on men
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Men and Masculinities. - 1097-184X .- 1552-6828. ; 17:3, s. 231-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the consolidation of "critical studies on men" or "masculinity studies" in recent years, critics have pointed to a kind of feminist theory deficit due to the relative lack of engagement with contemporary developments of feminist theory. By focusing on poststructuralist feminist and feminist phenomenological accounts of subjectivity, this article seeks to contribute to the emerging body of work that brings such theories into critical studies on men. I argue that making use of these perspectives is not only a matter of replacing dominant theories, but rather offers possibilities for creative re-reading of earlier work on masculinity, which may not have been sufficiently appreciated from the viewpoint of dominant structural perspectives. My argument proceeds through a reading of John Stoltenberg as a poststructuralist feminist, and a reading of Victor Seidler as a feminist phenomenologist. I suggest that the study of masculinity can benefit from both traditions, and as an example I consider Jonathan Salisbury’s and David Jackson’s work on "boys’ work." Drawing in particular on Sara Ahmed’s innovative combination of poststructuralism and phenomenology, I suggest an understanding of masculinity as "sticky."

  • Theorizing Power, Identity and Hip Hop : Towards a Queer, Intersectional Approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Educare. - 1653-1868 .- 2004-5190. ; :2, s. 75-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Power and identity are central themes in hip hop scholarship, whether it is race and class that are in focus, or gender and sexuality, or a combination. Yet power and identity are contested concepts that are used with varying theoretical outlooks. This article seeks to outline some key differences between different understandings of power and identity, and their consequences for the study of hip hop. Four models are identified. In the expression model, hip hop is understood as the cultural expression of a specific group. In contrast, the catalogization model and the two-plane model both acknowledge the existence of different dimensions of power and identity, but treat these either in a list-like manner or according to a base-superstructure dichotomy. The limitations of these two models can be overcome, it is suggested, by turning to the complexity model, which builds on contemporary feminist, intersectionality and queer theory

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the recent consolidation of “critical studies on men” or “masculinity studies”, critics have pointed to a theoretical deficit. Berggren discusses how critical studies on men could benefit from engaging with contemporary post-structuralist feminist theory and feminist phenomenological accounts of subjectivity. His argument proceeds through a reading of John Stoltenberg as a post-structuralist feminist and of Victor Seidler as a feminist phenomenologist. He suggests that the study of masculinity can benefit from both traditions. Drawing in particular on Sara Ahmed’s innovative combination of poststructuralism and phenomenology, Berggren suggests an understanding of masculinity as “sticky”.

  • Anna Julia Cooper : Tidig svart feminism
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sociologins klassiker - Upptäckter och återupptäckter. - Lund : Studentlitteratur AB. - 9789144141060 ; , s. 135-149

  • Ashamed of One’s Sexism, Mourning One’s Friends : Emotions and Relations in Men’s Encounters with Feminism in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525 .- 2000-1525. ; 12:3, s. 466-484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most important questions for feminist research on men and masculinity concerns how men can change and become more affected by feminism and less engaged in sexism. Here, men who identify as feminist, pro-feminist or anti-sexist have been considered to be of particular interest. This article contributes to the emerging research on men’s engagement with feminism by analysing contemporary writing about gender relations, inequality and masculinity, more specifically books about men published in Sweden, 2004-2015. Focusing on lived-experience descriptions, the analysis shows how a range of emotions are central to the processes where men encounter and are becoming affected by feminism. The emotions identified include happy ones such as relief, but a more prominent place is given to negative emotions such as alienation, shame, frustration, as well as loss and mourning. Drawing on Ahmed’s model of emotions as bound up with encounters with others, the article highlights how men’s engagement with feminism is embedded within interpersonal relations with others, particularly women partners, men friends, and children.
