  • Introduction : Posthumanism and the man question
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Posthumanism and the Man Question: Beyond Anthropocentric Masculinities. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 9781000824292 - 9781032113760 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introductory chapter provides a rationale for the book, reviews some of the key theoretical underpinnings of posthumanism and new materialism and outlines how they have influenced feminist theorising in relation to debates about the subject, sex, gender, sexual difference, the body, affect, relationality, matter, agency, human and other-than-human entanglements, ecology and technology. The implications of these feminist engagements with posthumanism and new materialism for critical studies of men and masculinities are considered and a posthuman feminist critique of the subject of ‘Man’ as the ideal human is outlined. The authors reflect upon their own biographical intellectual and political journeys of engagement with these issues to ground these debates in their own shifting subjectivities. The chapter concludes with a guide to chapters by the contributors who, from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds, bring these theoretical perspectives to life in their own considerations of what posthumanism and new materialism mean for the ‘man question’.

  • System, society and dominance effects in the adoption of tele-health: A tri-country comparison
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy. - 0143-831X .- 1461-7099. ; 38:3, s. 425-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although there have been many studies of low skilled call centre operators, research on professional workers in call centres is less common and cross-national research on such operations even rarer. This article compares the labour process experiences of tele-nurses – registered nurses in call centre settings – across three countries: the UK, Australia and Sweden. Using cross-national, comparative ethnographies, through a system, society and dominance (SSD) approach, the article explores the common problems tele-nurses face as well as distinctive societal differences in the ways in which this branch of e-health care is being established. The outcomes reveal both societal diversity and mounting pressures towards a globalizing conformity between the three countries with regard to the working practices of tele-nursing. The findings have important implications for whether or not a professional project can be developed around tele-health care.

  • On constitutive and configurational aspects of models for gradient continua with microstructure
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ZAMM Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik. - : Wiley. - 0044-2267. ; 89:8, s. 687-697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work is the investigation of some constitutive and configurational aspects of phenomenological model formulations for a class of materials with history-dependent gradient microstructure. The assumption that the behavior of a material point is affected by history-dependent processes in a finite neighbor of this point yields an extended continuum characterized by non-simple material behavior and by additional degrees-of-freedom. This includes both standard micromorphic materials as well as inelastic gradient materials as special cases. As in the case of simple materials, the corresponding constitutive relations are subject to restrictions imposed by material frame-indifference and material symmetry. In the latter case, both direct and differential restrictions are obtained in the case of assuming that the free energy density is an isotropic function of its arguments. In addtion, the concept of material isomorphism is shown to extend to inelastic gradient continua, resulting in a gradient generalization of the well-known elastoplastic multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. Finally, we examine the consequences of gradient extension for the formulation of configurational field and balance relations, and in particular for the Eshelby stress. This is carried out with the help of an incremental stress potential formulation as based on a continuum thermodynamic approach to the coupled field problem involved.

  • Environmental deterioration compromises socially enforced signals of male quality in three-spined sticklebacks
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: American Naturalist. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0003-0147 .- 1537-5323. ; 170:2, s. 184-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social costs are often important in promoting the honesty of sexually selected traits. What happens, then, when social costs are relaxed? In species that breed in shallow coastal waters, increases in the frequency and severity of phytoplankton blooms may undermine the value of visual signals by reducing visibility and, in so doing, lead to dishonest signaling by relaxing the social consequences of high signaling effort for poor-quality individuals. Here, we experimentally test the effects of algally induced water turbidity on the role of male-male competition in facilitating reliable sexual displays in three-spined sticklebacks. We found that males in poor condition reduced their courtship effort in the presence of competition in turbid water. This reduction, however, was to a much lesser extent than that observed in clear water. Thus, courtship under conditions of algal turbidity did not reflect male condition as honestly as courtship in clear water. Algal turbidity also influenced breeding coloration, with males in poor condition reducing their area of red nuptial coloration in turbid conditions. Our findings suggest that anthropogenic disturbance to the signaling environment can potentially reduce the evolutionary potential of sexual selection by diminishing the efficacy of visual displays and weakening socially enforced signals of male quality.

  • Biomarker-based dissection of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Progress in neurobiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-5118 .- 0301-0082. ; 95:4, s. 520-534
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases within neurology and psychiatry are hampered by the difficulty in getting biopsies and thereby validating the diagnosis by pathological findings. Biomarkers for other types of disease have been readily adopted into the clinical practice where for instance troponins are standard tests when myocardial infarction is suspected. However, the use of biomarkers for neurodegeneration has not been fully incorporated into the clinical routine. With the development of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers that reflect pathological events within the central nervous system (CNS), important clinical diagnostic tools are becoming available. This review summarizes the most promising biomarker candidates that may be used to monitor different types of neurodegeneration and protein inclusions, as well as different types of metabolic changes, in living patients in relation to the clinical phenotype and disease progression over time. Our aim is to provide the reader with an updated lexicon on currently available biomarker candidates, how far they have come in development and how well they reflect pathogenic processes in different neurodegenerative diseases. Biomarkers for specific pathogenetic processes would also be valuable tools both to study disease pathogenesis directly in patients and to identify and monitor the effect of novel treatment strategies.

  • Editorial for TISMIR Special Collection : AI and Musical Creativity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Transactions of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval. - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 2514-3298. ; 5:1, s. 67-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue focuses on research developments and critical thought in the domain of artificial intelligence (AI) applied to modeling and creating music. It is motivated by the AI Song Contests of 2020 and 2021, in which the four guest editors adjudicated or participated among many teams from around the world. The 2020 edition had 13 submissions and the 2021 edition had 38. The 2022 edition is now being planned. These unique events provide exciting opportunities for AI music researchers to test the state of the art and push the boundaries of what is possible, within the context of music creation. They portend a future when humans and machines work together as partners in music creation. Maybe "portend" is not the right term, but we must not think that the future of AI and music is only warm and fuzzy. It is important and timely to consider how we, in local and global contexts, can effectively and ethically develop and apply AI in contexts of music creation.

  • Folk the Algorithms : (Mis)Applying Artificial Intelligence to Folk Music
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Artificial Intelligence for Music. - Switzerland : Springer Nature.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter motivates the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to modeling styles of folk music. In this context, we focus particularly on questions about the meaningful evaluation of such AI, and argue that music practitioners should be integral to the research pursuit. We ground our discussion in specific music AI that model symbolic transcriptions of traditional dance music of Ireland and Scandinavia. Finally, we discuss several ethical dimensions of such work.
