    • During the breeding period dabbling ducks (Anas sp.), and especially newly hatched ducklings, face heavy mortality. The reasons are not clear, but suggested factors contributing are scarce food, predation, chilling and disease. We highlighted the question why many of the boreal lakes in Scandinavia are without breeding ducks and why mortality is considerable during brood period. In an experimental study in 2002 we hypothesized food being a major factor deciding duck survival during breeding. One wing-clipped hen mallard with her own newly hatched brood (10 ducklings) was introduced onto each of 10 lakes. Food was added ad libitum at 5 of these lakes (experimental lakes), whereas the other five lakes (controls) did not get any extra food added. Survival of hens, broods as well as each individual duckling was monitored regularly until 24 days after introduction. At all three levels (i.e. duckling, brood and adult), survival was significantly higher on lakes with food added than on control lakes, although the difference was most pronounced on the duckling level. Direct consequences (i.e. dying from starvation) as well as indirect (e.g. undernourished individuals being more easily taken by predators) may both explain this pattern. Our results clearly show that food is a major limiting factor on mallard survival in this environment. Also, our results may explain why many boreal lakes in Scandinavia do not have any breeding waterfowl at all. It seems likely that such lakes are too poor to raise broods and even to sustain adults.

  • An experimental study on the interaction between inbreeding and assortative mating in the process of speciation : Assortative mating and inbreeding

    • In the process of speciation, assortative mating and its costs in terms of possible inbreeding depression play a central and sometimes critical role. Despite this fact, given the numerous models on assortative mating, and the rich theory and empirical data on inbreeding at hand, studies of the interaction between the two are essentially missing. This study experimentally explores the interaction of inbreeding and assortative mating in the process of speciation. We show that in small populations of the bean weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus, signs of inbreeding depression, such as reduced female fecundity, decreased juvenile hatching success, changed hatched offspring sex ratio, and extinction develop in relation to assortative mating. We also show that in these inbred populations, the mating system changes in terms of a reduced tendency to mate assortatively.

    • Sublethal effects of medetomidine, a new generation antifouling compound, on lumpfish ( Cyclopterus lumpus L.) and cod ( Gadus morhua L.) larvae were examined. The effects on respiration rate and on colour adaptation of newly hatched larvae were assessed after 24-96 h exposure. Exposure of lumpfish larvae to the experimental concentrations resulted in a significant decrease in respiration rate (Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) = 5-10 nM) and in the percentage of dark larvae (LOEC = 4 nM). However, no effects on respiration rate of cod larvae were detected. In addition to lumpfish larvae being affected at low concentrations of medetomidine, a reversibility of the effects was observed when 96 h-exposed larvae were incubated in clean seawater for 24-48 h. Considerations relating to the future commercialisation of medetomidine for antifouling purposes are discussed.

  • Surface morphology, structural and optical properties of polar and non-polar ZnO thin films : A comparative study

    • The polar and non-polar ZnO thin films were fabricated on cubic MgO (1 1 1) and (0 0 1) substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, the ZnO thin films grown on MgO (1 1 1) and (1 0 0) substrates exhibit the polar c-plane and non-polar m-plane orientation, respectively. Comparing with the c-plane ZnO film, the non-polar m-plane ZnO film shows cross-hatched stripes-like morphology, lower surface roughness and slower growth rate. However, low-temperature photoluminescence measurement indicates the m-plane ZnO film has a stronger 3.31 eV emission, which is considered to be related to stacking faults. Meanwhile, stronger band tails absorbance of the m-plane ZnO film is observed in optical absorption spectrum.

  • Effect of crocin and naringenin supplementation in cryopreservation medium on post-thaw rooster sperm quality and expression of apoptosis associated genes

    • The aim of our study was to examine the effects of crocin (0.5 (C0.5), 1 (C1) and 1.5 (C1.5) mM) and naringenin (50 (N50), 100 (N100) and 150 (N150) mu M) in cryopreservation extender for freezing rooster semen. Sperm motility, viability, abnormalities, membrane functionality, active mitochondria, apoptosis status, lipid peroxidation (LP), GPX, SOD, TAC, the mRNA expression of pro-apoptotic (CASPASE 3) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) genes, fertile eggs, hatched eggs and hatching rate were investigated following freeze-thawing. C1 and N100 resulted in higher (P < 0.05) total motility and progressive motility in comparison to the control group. The C1 and N100 groups improved viability, membrane functionality and reduced lipid peroxidation. We found higher values for active mitochondria with C1 and N100 compared to control group. The C1 and N100 groups showed lower percentages of early apoptosis when compared with control group. Also, C1 and N100 had higher TAC, compared to the control group. The mRNA expressions of BCL-2 in the C1 and N100 groups were significantly higher than that of other treatments. The expression of CASPASES 3 was significantly reduced in C1 and N100 group (P < 0.05) when compared to control group. Significantly higher percentages of fertile eggs, hatched eggs and hatching rate were observed in C1 and N100 compared to the control group. In conclusion, crocin at 1 mM and naringenin at 100 mu M seem to improve the post-thawing rooster semen quality, fertility and could protect the sperm by reducing the pro-apoptotic (CASPASE 3) and increasing anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) genes.

    • An evaluation of different thermal regimes during incubation of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus L. egg was conducted with regard to embryo survival and development. The study consisted of two major parts: In experiment A, a range of commonly used thermal regimes, constant and variable ranging from 2.7 degrees C to 7 degrees C, were tested for differences in embryo survival and developmental status of newly hatched alevins. Experiment B assessed the timing of a shift from autumn (6 degrees C) to winter temperature (2.5 degrees C) and its effect on embryo survival and the occurrence of spinal deformities in newly hatched alevins. In general, incubations that were initiated at temperatures below 3 degrees C resulted in significantly higher mortality rates and spinal deformity frequencies than other treatments. Hence, Arctic charr eggs require an initial warmer period for unimpaired embryonic development. A general negative correlation was found between the duration of this warmer period (6 degrees C) and both mortality rates and frequency of spinal deformities. The total absence of the 6 degrees C period had the most detrimental effect, with deformity frequencies at least four times higher than all treatments with an initial warmer period. The upper incubation temperature threshold was not reached in the study. The highest temperature tested (7 degrees C) did not result in excess mortality or increased deformity frequency. Higher incubation temperature resulted in less developed alevins at hatching, i.e. alevins were smaller with more yolk remaining. However, measurements on alevins from incubations at variable temperatures revealed different temperature effects on growth and yolk consumption during different parts of embryonic development.

  • Phenological Shifts in a Warming World Affect Physiology and Life History in a Damselfly

    • Simple Summary Climate warming affects phenological events of cold-blooded organisms. In this analysis we studied, in laboratory conditions, the impact of warming and hatching dates on key life history and physiological traits in a cannibalistic damselfly, Ischnura elegans. Larvae were reared in groups from hatching to emergence through one or two growth seasons, depending on the voltinism. Larvae were equally divided by hatching dates (early and late) and temperature treatment (current and warming). Early and late hatched groups were not mixed. Despite no difference in cannibalism rate between different hatching dates and temperatures, early hatched larvae reared under warming had elevated immune function measured as phenoloxidase (PO) activity. This increased PO activity was not traded off with life history traits. Instead, age and mass at emergence, and growth rate were mainly affected by temperature and voltinism. Our results confirm the importance of phenological shifts in a warming world for shaping physiology and life history in a freshwater insect. Under climate warming, temperate ectotherms are expected to hatch earlier and grow faster, increase the number of generations per season, i.e., voltinism. Here, we studied, under laboratory conditions, the impact of artificial warming and manipulated hatching dates on life history (voltinism, age and mass at emergence and growth rate) and physiological traits (phenoloxidase (PO) activity at emergence, as an indicator of investment in immune function) and larval survival rate in high-latitude populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans. Larvae were divided into four groups based on crossing two treatments: early versus late hatching dates and warmer versus control rearing temperature. Damselflies were reared in groups over the course of one (univoltine) or two (semivoltine) growth seasons, depending on the voltinism. Warming temperature did not affect survival rate. However, warming increased the number of univoltine larvae compared to semivoltine larvae. There was no effect of hatching phenology on voltinism. Early hatched larvae reared under warming had elevated PO activity, regardless of their voltinism, indicating increased investment in immune function against pathogens. Increased PO activity was not associated with effects on age or mass at emergence or growth rate. Instead, life history traits were mainly affected by temperature and voltinism. Warming decreased development time and increased growth rate in univoltine females, yet decreased growth rate in univoltine males. This indicates a stronger direct impact of warming and voltinism compared to impacts of hatching phenology on life history traits. The results strengthen the evidence that phenological shifts in a warming world may affect physiology and life history in freshwater insects.

However, brood size of newly hatched ducklings was not related to the hatching date, implying that the advantage of early breeding is due to processes operating during the brood stage rather than during nesting. Half of the lakes never produced a brood, and among the 26 lakes that actually did, two `preferred' lakes generated 44% of the broods and 55% of the near-fledged ducklings. Early broods were over-represented on such `preferred' lakes, and late broods over-represented on `less preferred' lakes. Our study suggests that lake selection and early nesting may have important fitness consequences in teal.
