Robust intersection of hexahedral meshes and triangle meshes with applications in finite volume methods

- The topic of this thesis is the intersection of a structured hexahedral grid and one or more triangle meshes. The interest in the problem has arisen in connection with a finite volume method for simulation of conjugated heat transfer. In the particular finite volume method, axis-aligned hexahedra are used for the discretization of the simulation domain, and solids are represented by triangle meshes. The heat equation is discretized over the hexahedral cells. Special treatment is needed in the cells that are intersected by the surface of the solid. In these cells, the solid temperature is found after discretization of the heat equation over the solid part of the cell. To implement the above, it is of great importance to find the geometry of the cut cells. Of particular interest is the solid volume fraction of a cell, and the solid area fraction of the cell faces. The solid volume fraction is defined as the fraction of the hexahedral cell that is intersected by the solid. Similarly, the solid area fraction is defined for each cell face as the fraction of the face that is intersected by the solid. Two algorithms for calculation of the solid volume fraction and the solid area fractions are presented. One algorithm is exact, and the other is approximate. The algorithms are extended to handle double surfaces, which is a common mesh degeneracy in engineering applications. A double surface is two layers of coplanar triangles, formed when the triangles are put on top of each other. The handling of double surfaces is an extension of similar algorithms, which only handle non degenerate triangle meshes. This work is a step towards an algorithm that can be used with such meshes without preprocessing through a repair algorithm. A mesh repair method could be adopted, if available, but that is not always desirable since the existing repair algorithms could fail in removing the degeneracies without introducing unwanted side effects. This motivates the need for an algorithm that handles degenerate triangle meshes. The algorithms are validated against a geometry from an industrial application, which includes a double surface. It is concluded that the exact algorithm is independent of cell size, while the approximate algorithm is second order accurate for the test case that has been studied. It is further concluded that the methods handle the major problems with double surfaces. Finally, it is described how the algorithms are used in a finite volume framework for simulation of conjugated heat transfer.

- We investigate network nonlocality in the triangle scenario when all three parties have no input and binary outputs. Through an explicit example, we prove that this minimal scenario supports nonlocal correlations compatible with no-signaling and independence of the three sources, but not with realisations based on independent quantum or classical sources. This nonlocality is robust to noise. Moreover, we identify the equivalent to a Popescu-Rohrlich box in the minimal triangle scenario.

- Surface tension of the Ni3S2-FeS-Cu2S ternary mattes has been calculated using a mass triangle model as well as six traditional geometrical models based on the same calculation data to investigate the difference between mass triangle model and other kinds of geometrical models. From the calculated results, it might be seen that, the mass triangle model, irrespective of the method of selection of the binary data, would give the best results compared with other traditional geometrical models. The mean square root errors of the mass triangle method only range from 1.09% to 2.8%, which are almost within the experimental error of 2.5%.

- The Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) is a regional-scale effort involving numerous stakeholders aiming to address pressing coastal and marine problems that threaten the ecological, economic, and cultural identities of the Southeast Asia Pacific Coral Triangle region. This paper draws on the Advocacy Coalition Framework to examine the main CTI stakeholders to better understand their efforts to design and implement marine management policies. It explores CTI stakeholders' policy beliefs and preferences, their patterns of collaboration and trust, their access to resources and level of influence, and their views on the overall performance of the CTI circa 2011. Data come primarily from a survey of 63 stakeholders. The findings suggest that the CTI is best viewed as a nascent, collaborative policy subsystem wherein there is strong support for the CTI objectives among stakeholders, convergence in policy beliefs and preferences, and instances of collaboration. However, some tensions are highlighted within the policy subsystem, which risk undermining the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of the Initiative. We argue that, as the CTI matures, it is important to maintain broad convergence in policy beliefs to prevent the formation of adversarial coalitions within the CTI, and/or to avoid unilateral prioritisation of powerful global interests to the detriment of national and local priorities. While political fortunes lie beyond prediction, these scenarios might be averted through the aid of a policy broker and through fostering established and new collaborative forums with institutional arrangements that promote trust and consensus.

- The atomic and electronic structures of the Ag∕Si(111)√3×√3 surface are currently under debate. By employing angle-resolved valence-band spectroscopy, the surface band dispersions around the K̅ point of the Ag∕Si(111)√3×√3 surface have been investigated in detail. Contrary to a recent study, we conclude that the S2 and S3 surface state bands do not show any detectable split at 100 K. Thus, photoemission spectra at both room temperature and 100 K show only a single peak at the K̅ point without any direct evidence of a split. Calculated band structures for the inequivalent triangle (IET) model show a gap at the K̅ point in contrast to the honeycomb-chain-trimer (HCT) model. We find, however, that there is no real contradiction between our photoemission data and the IET model provided the energy gap of the latter model is small as indicated by a recent calculation [ Phys. Rev. B 70 245431 (2004)].
