The area and perimeter of a random spherical triangle

- We determine the distribution functions for the area and the perimeter of a random spherical triangle. We consider two natural ‘polar’ ways of generating the random triangle. It turnsout that the distribution for the area in the first way is closely related to the distribution of the perimeter in the second way, and vice versa.

- Economic and environmental benefits are the most important in the operation of community integrated energy systems (CIES), modeled as a bi-objective optimization problem. In the case of the uncertainties from loads and renewable energy generators, the effectiveness of the operation strategies may be degraded in the practical applications of CIES. In this paper, an improved triangle splitting based bi-objective optimization method is proposed to search for the Pareto optimal solution of the CIES operation. The general preference of decision-makers in practical applications is utilized in the search process to reduce the detailed search interval and consequently improve the optimization efficiency. In addition, a bi-objective uncertain optimization framework is established for the economic-environmental operation of the CIES under uncertainties. The correlation between uncertainties is considered to generate the operation scenarios, in which the solution probability function is employed to determine the final operation strategy with robustness. A comprehensive case study is conducted based on a practical CIES in China, proving the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

- Several algorithms that use graphics hardware to accelerate processing require conservative rasterization in order to function correctly. Conservative rasterization stands for either overestimating or underestimating the size of the triangles. Overestimation is carried out by including all pixels that are at least partially overlapped by the triangle, whereas underestimation includes only the pixels that are fully inside the triangle. No or few algorithms for conservative rasterization have been described in the literature, and current hardware does not explicitly support it. Therefore, we present a simple algorithm, which requires only a small modification to the triangle set-up when edge functions are used. Furthermore, the same algorithm can be used for tiled rasterization, where all pixels in a tile (e.g., 8 × 8 pixels) are visited before moving to the next tile.

- In this paper, we deal with several reoptimization variants of the Steiner tree problem in graphs obeying a sharpened β -triangle inequality. A reoptimization algorithm exploits the knowledge of an optimal solution to a problem instance for finding good solutions for a locally modified instance. We show that, in graphs satisfying a sharpened triangle inequality (and even in graphs where edge-costs are restricted to the values 1 and 1+ γ for an arbitrary small γ > 0), Steiner tree reoptimization still is NP-hard for several different types of local modifications, and even APX-hard for some of them. As for the upper bounds, for some local modifications, we design linear-time (1 /2 + β )-approximation algorithms, and even polynomialtime approximation schemes, whereas for metric graphs ( β = 1), none of these reoptimization variants is known to permit a PTAS. As a building block for some of these algorithms, we employ a 2 β -approximation algorithm for the classical Steiner tree problem on such instances, which might be of independent interest since it improves over the previously best known ratio for any β < 1/2 + ln(3)/4 ≈ 0. 775.

- PURPOSE: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, introduced in 1985 by Prof. Dr. Erich Mühe, has become the gold standard for treating chronic symptomatic calculous cholecystopathy and acute cholecystitis, with an estimated 750,000 procedures performed annually in the United States of America. The risk of iatrogenic bile duct injury persists, ranging from 0.2 to 1.3%. Risk factors include male gender, obesity, acute cholecystitis, previous hepatobiliary surgery, and anatomical variations in Calot's triangle. Strategies to mitigate bile duct injury include the Critical View of Safety and fundus-first dissection, along with intraoperative cholangiography and alternative approaches like subtotal cholecystectomy.METHODS: This paper introduces the shoeshine technique, a maneuver designed to achieve atraumatic exposure of anatomical structures, local hemostatic control, and ease of infundibulum mobilization. This technique involves the use of a blunt dissection tool and gauze to create traction and enhance visibility in Calot's triangle, particularly beneficial in cases of severe inflammation. Steps include using the critical view of safety and Rouviere's sulcus line for orientation, followed by careful dissection and traction with gauze to maintain stability and reduce the risk of instrument slippage.RESULTS: The technique, routinely used by the authors in over 2000 cases, has shown to enhance patient safety and reduce bile duct injury risks.CONCLUSION: The shoeshine technique represents a simple and easy way to apply maneuver that can help surgeon during laparoscopic cholecystectomies exposing the hepatocystic area and promote blunt dissection.

Quark mixing sum rules and the right unitarity triangle

- In analogy with the recently proposed lepton mixing sum rules, we derive quark mixing sum rules for the case of hierarchical quark mass matrices with 1-3 texture zeros, in which the separate up and down-type 1-3 mixing angles are approximately zero, and V-ub is generated from V-cb as a result of 1-2 up-type quark mixing. Using the sum rules, we discuss the phenomenological viability of such textures, including up to four texture zeros, and show how the right-angled unitarity triangle, i.e., alpha approximate to 90 degrees, can be accounted for by a remarkably simple scheme involving real mass matrices apart from a single element being purely imaginary. In the framework of grand unified theories, we show how the quark and lepton mixing sum rules may combine to yield an accurate prediction for the reactor angle.

Making transformation happen : Institutional entrepreneurship and boundary management in the Coral Triangle

- This licentiate thesis sets out to investigate the dynamics of transformative change in social-ecological systems. That is, how large-scale sustainability transitions can be initiated and purposefully navigated. It does so by examining the emergence of the Coral Triangle Initiative–a multi-lateral partnership between six countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific aimed to transform governance and management of costal and marine resources in the region. The first study draws on theories on institutional entrepreneurship, social-ecological systems, and regime formation to analyze what factors and strategies enable transformative change. The study shows how institutional entrepreneurs are leveraging resources and garnering support from the highest political level across the region. It also shows how institutional entrepreneurs navigate the broader opportunity context by preparing the system for change and scaling up new ideas. The second study apply boundary management theory to investigate what challenges are associated with the endeavor to manage a large-scale sustainability initiative in a regionally inter-connected ecosystem like the Coral Triangle–a system where contextual complexity creates constraints on collaboration and policy making. In particular, the study examines how the interplay between different stakeholders affects the legitimacy, salience, and credibility of transformative change. The study shows that resources asymmetries, difficulties at linking scales, and lack of transparency risk to undermine each of the three, especially since the CTI has not adequately allowed for negotiation around trade-offs between social and ecological goals.
