When are data? : Reflections on the making (possible) of research data.

- Digital research data is often advanced as a trouble-free concept and used to describe the material of research at all stages in a research process. However frequently such framing lacks understanding of the roles of disciplinary and organisational cultures, and of what the various practices, including those of funding policy and university administration, involved in shaping what research data are and can do and when. In this paper we explore data and the making of data during the construction of two big science facilities in Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAX IV. Specifically we focus on the necessary infrastructure for dealing with various aspects of research data management (RDM). We transform the question "What are data?" into "When are data?" and highlight how research data are also shaped by their entanglement across different support services and professional practices aiding, preceding and succeeding the work of the researcher. This brings into relief how the making of data relates to the making possible of data and that making possible occurs by setting up and planning for production, storage, and use of research data. Paying attention to temporal aspects in the construction of research data allows us to show some ways in which the meaning of data is contingent to when they are approached, to the possibilities of support infrastructures and their various materialities and to strategic roles data are assigned. This paper draws on a study carried out in 2014 and 2015. The material used was compiled in interviews and document studies.

- Det här är en rapport från ett Vinnovafinansierat projekt där syftet har varit att empiriskt visa på de största utmaningarna för ett ökat tillgängliggörande av öppna data och att visa på möjliga vägar fram. Gemensamt för alla öppna data är att det är maskinläsbara datamängder som kan vidareutnyttjas av vem som helst. Det finns framförallt två aspekter man behöver förhålla sig till när man pratar om öppna data: Vilka datamängder det handlar om samt vilka krav som ställs på tillgängliggörandet. • Det finns flera olika drivkrafter för att arbeta med öppna data. Exempelvis är en verklig offentlighetsprincip i en modern förvaltning är knappt möjlig utan öppna data. Rapporten beskriver ett antal grupper av olika men relaterade syften. - Effektivisera den egna verksamheten - Främja innovation och företagsklimat - Främja regional upplevelse- och besöksnäring - Öka insyn och demokratisk delaktighet • Att tillgängliggöra data består av två huvudsakliga processer - det institutionella möjliggörandet och det tekniska tillgängliggörandet. De organisatoriska frågorna underskattas ofta. Medverkande institutioner i framtagandet av rapport: Media Evolution, Sydsvenska Industri- och Handelskammaren, BTH Innovation (wi.se), och Lunds universitets Internetinstitut (LUii). Huvudsaklig skribent är Joakim Lundblad vid Handelskammaren.

- Det har skrivits mycket litteratur de senaste åren, dels om forskningsdata generellt och dels om hur stödet kring forskningsdatahanteringen byggs upp, inte minst på universitetsbiblioteken. Utmaningarna är många, från de juridiska frågeställningarna till den faktiska hanteringen av olika typer av data. Vilka specialistkompetenser som är centrala för en framgångsrik verksamhet och hur dessa roller samordnas inom universitet är något som Edinburghs universitetsbibliotek arbetar med. Bland annat har universitetet en policy för forskningsdata sedan 2011 och vi var nyfikna på hur de arbetar med att stödja sina forskare med forskningsdatahantering. På Malmö högskolas bibliotek pågår under 2016 ett projekt för tillgängliggörande av forskningsdata. En studieresa till Edinburgh hösten 2016 kunde genomföras med ett resestipendium från Svensk biblioteksförening.

Documenting Videogame Communities : A Study of Community Production of Information in Social-Media Environments and its Implications for Videogame Preservation

- Drawing on the disciplines of library and information studies and archival studies, this study seeks to explore the production of information in online videogame communities and to elucidate how such insights can offer practical and conceptual support to the knotty issue of how to preserve those sociocultural aspects of videogames that exist 'beyond' the code and audiovisual data resources of the videogame itself. This is accomplished in two principal moves: (i) by delving into the current state of socioculturally-focused videogame preservation and; (ii) by inquiring into the production of information carried out by videogame communities in what arguably is one of their most important interfaces of interaction—discussion forums, wikis, and other social-media services. The study is based on four papers (I–IV). Paper I develops the theoretical framework of the study on the basis of practice theory and document theory. Papers II and III report on field-studies of videogame-community information production in the context of two processes of importance in community social life: memory-making (II) and knowledge production (III). Paper IV offers a qualitative systematic review of videogame-archiving literature, allowing Papers I–III to be situated in an archival context. The study employs multiple methods and encompasses several empirical sites of inquiry and was inspired by the framework of exploratory research and of 'bricolage' research strategies.The results of the study add to the present state of knowledge on how information in the social-media environments of the large and influential present-day videogaming domain emerges as a result of community practices of production, and how videogame-community social life is entangled with information production in such spaces. The study also furthers archival inquiry on the topic of videogame preservation by providing a description and analysis of what information objects videogame-related social media plausibly hold, and by what communal practices and processes they have been brought into existence. Furthermore, the study examines the consequences of collecting community-produced social media and framing it as documentation of the sociocultural aspects of videogames—a key issue in videogames preservation.

Publiceringsstöd i samverkan vid Malmö högskola : en strategi för hur bibliotekarier och forskare kan följas åt i forskningsprocessen

- Vår erfarenhet är att publicerande forskare vid många högskolor och universitet ofta upplever registrering och tillgängliggörande av forskningsresultat i öppna arkiv som en pålaga från ledningen och biblioteket, snarare än som en attraktiv möjlighet att sprida och dela resultat eller som en karriärfördel. Biblioteken på svenska lärosäten idag har som uppdrag att stödja lärosätets forskare när det gäller publiceringsfrågor av olika slag särskilt relaterat till open access. I många fall förekommer ett utbud av kurser och presentationer till fakulteter om exempelvis parallellpublicering, val av tidskrift för publicering och upphovsrätt. Vid Bibliotek och IT på Malmö högskola vill vi utveckla en modell för publiceringsstödet i samverkan med forskarna, där vi erbjuder rätt stöd vid rätt tillfälle utifrån forskarnas behov och önskemål. Vår idé är att i nära relation med forskarna skapa oss en bild av var i publiceringsprocessen stödet bör komma in och hur det kan utformas tydligare. På detta sätt förändras arbetssättet från en biblioteksbaserad måluppfyllelse till en forskarnära stödfunktion. Ett första steg är att på Mötesplats open access beskriva de aspekter vi hittills har identifierat utifrån våra erfarenheter och olika kompetenser i juridik, open access och forskningsprocessen för att skapa en modell för ett publiceringsstöd i samverkan mellan forskare och bibliotekarier. Vi vill att presentationen ska leda till samtal/idéutbyte med andra för att i nästa steg utföra en pilot i samarbete med en forskargrupp där vi ingår i hela publiceringsprocessen och kan utveckla formen tillsammans med forskarna.

- PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand how meaning is assigned to online searching by viewing it as a mundane, yet often invisible, activity of everyday life and an integrated part of various social practices.Design/methodology/approachSearching is investigated with a sociomaterial approach with a starting point in information searching as entangled across practices and material arrangements and as a mundane part of everyday life. In total, 21 focus groups with 127 participants have been carried out. The study focusses particularly on peoples’ experiences and meaning-making and on how these experiences and the making of meaning could be understood in the light of algorithmic shaping.FindingsAn often-invisible activity such as searching is made visible with the help of focus group discussions. An understanding of the relationship between searching and everyday life through two interrelated narratives is proposed: a search-ification of everyday life and a mundane-ification of search.Originality/valueThe study broadens the often narrow focus on searching in order to open up for a research-based discussion in information science on the role of online searching in society and everyday life.

Tillgänglighet, närhet och synlighet – gemensamma utmaningar för LUB-nätverket för att möta forskares behov av stöd vid Lunds universitet

- This report presents a project at Lund University Libraries (LUB) during the fall of 2012, with the object to identify areas where the present research support services ought to be developed and strengthened. The project is three folded and contains a) a literature review focusing on definitions and examples of research support services as well as researchers’ needs and experiences of support services, b) a survey to get an overview of the support services offered today at LUB, the decentralized library network at Lund University, and c) focus group interviews with researchers, one group from each partaking faculty, to investigate key obstacles in their research processes. In all three parts a model of the research process schematically divided into four phases was applied; to start a project, to collect material, to process/analyze/write and to communicate the results. The first two stages of the project, the literature overview and the survey, form a background and both show that many support services are concentrated around the phases to collect material and to communicate results. The findings from the focus group interviews point to common needs and issues as well as special needs and issues related to different ways of doing and communicating research. Common for most researchers is limited time, a need for funding and an everyday fragmentation. They talk about the importance of networks, their efforts to navigate in an abundance of material and ways to find it and a need for overviews and help to understand new ways and demands to communicate. Most concern is expressed in the phases to start a project, to collect material and to communicate results. A major conclusion is that the research support services need to be available, visible and in close proximity to the researchers. Further, the development of support services needs to take into consideration both common traits as well as local variations in research practices. Therefore, discussions concerning LUB as a whole, need to be related to discussions at the single faculty libraries. Apart from knowledge about how to address the research support services at LUB, the project generates a model for how librarians can understand the research community that they are working with and with whom to create networks and partnerships for the future.
