  • Svensson, Ola, 1967- (författare)
  • Place names, Landscape and Assembly Sites in Skåne, Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of the North Atlantic. - Steuben, ME : Eagle Hill Institute. - 1935-1984 .- 1935-1933. ; 8:sp8, s. 82-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper discusses a particular type of assembly site in medieval and presumably even older times for the exercise of justice in the province of Skåne (Scania) in southern Sweden (Scandinavian medieval: approx. AD 1050–1520). Through a close and detailed consideration of historical and antiquarian research focused around two key landscape case studies—Torna hundred and Vemmenhög hundred—this study challenges long-established models of assembly formation, location, and naming. The paper concludes by providing an entirely new perspective on what place-names associated with legal practice and judicial administration might signal about the genesis and organization of early medieval systems of power and justice.

  • Dateringen av Västerhus kyrkogård : Ett bidrag till studiet av Jämtlands kristnande
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Västerhus. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 9789174023848 ; , s. 130-153
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article, which is a somewhat extended version of an article originally published in Current Swedish Archaeology 14 (2006), the author uses different dating methods to try to show that the Västerhus cemetery was established between c. 1125 and 1250 and that it ceased to be used between c. 1375 and 1500. In any event the cemetery most likely was in use for more than 200 years. The proposed dates are later than those proposed previously on the basis of 14C analyses of skeletons from the cemetery. In the author’s opinion, the 14C dates are probably misleading on account of reservoir effects. The Västerhus church and cemetery – which yielded one of the best preserved and most wellstudied medieval skeletal materials in northern Europe – were thus not established at the time of Jämtland’s official Christianization, as earlier claimed, but instead one or a few generations later. The author points out that several other early churches and cemeteries in Jämtland are just as late. Similar gaps in time between the official Christianization and the widespread building of churches are also known from other parts of Scandinavia.

  • Gender and status competition in pre-modern societies
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This innovative volume of cultural history offers a unique exploration of how gender and status competition have intersected across different periods and places. The contributions collected here focus on the role of women and the practice of masculinity in setting as varied as ancient Rome, China, Iran and Arabia, medieval and early modern England, and early modern Italy, France, and Scandinavia, as well as exploring issues that affected people of all social rank, from raillery and pranks to shaming, male boasting about sexual conquests, court rituals, violence, and the use and display of wealth. Particular attention is paid to the performance of such issues, with chapters examining status and gender through cultural practices, especielly specific (re)presentations of women. These include Roman priestesses, early Christian virgin martyrs, flirtation in seventh-century Arabia, and the attempt by an early modern French woman to take her place among the immortals. Together this wide-ranging and fascinating array of studies from renowned scholars offers new insights into how and why different cultures responded to the drive for status, and the complications of gender within that drive.

  • Social och ekonomisk stratifiering i Jämtland 800-1600 : en kritisk forskningsöversikt
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Collegium Medievale. - 0801-9282 .- 2387-6700. ; 23, s. 114-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides a critical survey of research on social and economic stratification within the province of Jämtland, Mid-Scandinavia, during the Viking Age, Middle Ages, and the 16th century. Both historical, archaeological, and toponymical research is covered. The author shows that the grade of social and economical stratification among the peasant population of Jämtland during the Viking Age and the early Middle Ages, up to circa 1350, have been judged very differently in former research. Some scholars have characterized Jämtland during this period as a strongly stratified society, others have characterized Jämtland as a relatively egalitarian society, where the distance between the top and the bottom were smaller than in many other parts of Scandinavia. However, when it comes to the 16th century there seems to be a consensus among scholars that Jämtland was unusually egalitarian.Scholars have also put forward different opinions of what the elites of Jämtland lived on. Some have claimed that a surplus from trade was more important than a surplus from farming, while others have claimed that before 1350 an agrarian surplus was the base for the elite, but that this stratified society collapsed with the Black Death and the late medieval agrarian crisis. The author objects to the latter opinions and points out that there is no evidence for a large change of the social structure of Jämtland at the time of the agrarian crisis. All this concerns the agrarian population of Jämtland. The author also touches on the Sami population in Jämtland, but notes that questions about social and economic stratification within this group before 1600 have not been disussed in earlier research, due to the the lack of sources. However, sources from the first half of the 17th century give the impression of a strongly stratified Sami society.

  • The Socio-Ecological Crises of Capitalism
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Capital and its Discontents. - Oakland : PM Press. - 9781552663943 ; , s. 136-152
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • I think the lesson is that Malthus was wrong because he took the problem of limits outside of history, outside the history that women and men make in the modern world. So the issue is not that there is no scarcity — of course, capitalism is a system that is premised on induced scarcity. That’s why markets in the capitalist era function the way that they do. So I think the mistake of the left has been in a certain reluctance to deal with the problems of scarcity, or in some cases back into an embrace of a neo-Malthusian scarcity mentality in which there are these “natural limits” that are outside of how capitalism functions historically as an ecological regime.

  • The Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database : a resource for international, multiproxy and transdisciplinary studies of environmental and climatic change
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate and environmental change are global challenges which require global data and infrastructure to investigate. These challenges also require a multi-proxy approach, integrating evidence from Quaternary science and archaeology with information from studies on modern ecology and physical processes among other disciplines. The Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD http://www.sead.se) is a Swedish based international research e-infrastructure for storing, managing, analysing and disseminating palaeoenvironmental data from an almost unlimited number of analysis methods. The system currently makes available raw data from over 1500 sites (>5300 datasets) and the analysis of Quaternary fossil insects, plant macrofossils, pollen, geochemistry and sediment physical properties, dendrochronology and wood anatomy, ceramic geochemistry and bones, along with numerous dating methods. This capacity will be expanded in the near future to include isotopes, multi-spectral and archaeo-metalurgical data. SEAD also includes expandable climate and environment calibration datasets, a complete bibliography and extensive metadata and services for linking these data to other resources. All data is available as Open Access through http://qsead.sead.se and downloadable software. SEAD is maintained and managed at the Environmental Archaeology Lab and HUMlab at Umea University, Sweden. Development and data ingestion is progressing in cooperation with The Laboratory for Ceramic Research and the National Laboratory for Wood Anatomy and Dendrochronology at Lund University, Sweden, the Archaeological Research Laboratory, Stockholm University, the Geoarchaeological Laboratory, Swedish National Historical Museums Agency and several international partners and research projects. Current plans include expanding its capacity to serve as a data source for any system and integration with the Swedish National Heritage Board's information systems. SEAD is partnered with the Neotoma palaeoecology database (http://www.neotomadb.org) and a new initiative for building cyberinfrastructure for transdisciplinary research and visualization of the long-term human ecodynamics of the North Atlantic funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
