  • The Postmodernisms of Russell Hall: Exploring Australia’s Changing Architecture Culture Through a Biographical Approach
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Fabrications. - 2164-4756 .- 1033-1867. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the work and practice of Brisbane-based architect Russell Hall to better understand how architects in Australia negotiated the professional and formal changes that emerged in architectural culture from the 1970s. Architectural historiographies tend to discuss postmodernism as plural and multiple, while also boxing it into various branches or strands, such as ecological, traditionalist/historicist, vernacular, or pop/fun. Many of these strands, however, co-exist within the work of architects. When you study their professional biographies up close, it becomes difficult (if not impossible) to sustain these categorisations, as architectural designs often blend different interests in specific, situated ways. If broad categorisations exist about postmodern architectural forms, so too do they exist about postmodern professional practice. In the latter decades of the 20th century, it is often said, the “hired-gun-architect” and the “conglomerate architecture-building-business corporation” replaced the “gentleman-artist-architect.” However, once again, on the ground, the situation is often more nuanced and multifaceted than that. This paper adopts a biographical approach to better understand how one architect, Hall, negotiated the professional and formal changes that emerged in architectural culture from the 1970s. In doing so, it seeks to improve our understanding of postmodern architectural culture in Australia—and Queensland specifically.

  • Adaptive Façade – which criteria are needed?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: facade2015. Computational Optimisation. Proceedings. - 9783939349235 ; 1
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Adaptability of facades is often conceived as a performative objective, and less as a formal objective. Hence, so-called ‘adaptive’ façade systems are highly engineered solutions that autonomously control the energy flow via highly-efficient materials, integrated technical devices and intelligent automation systems. As the design complexity and operation challenges of such façade systems are substantially increasing, the role of integrated design becomes a fundamental question. What sort of adaptation of facades is needed and what is needed to successfully implement it? A meaningful approach to adaptive functions in facades must be discussed within the integrated design context to enable reliable and accepted solutions. Respective functionality must be combined with formal, aesthetic and social needs that equally have to adapt and/or react. And it must be embedded in the constructive goals for the facade structure and choice of materials to become an cooperating element and not an additive matter. Modern digital design tools and production techniques enable new potentials for embedded adaptation that can intelligently respond to the energy and comfort requirements through designed attributes of the construction itself. However, whatever approach is employed for the realization, the needs must be clarified. Hereby, architectural criteria are often missing and must be re-integrated in the objectives. This paper suggests a first sketch for an integrated design approach to functional and formal requirements for adaptation from the perspective of architectural design. The objectives are to start a critical discussion on needed criteria for an adaptive capability of the facade and to open the discussion about the meaningfulness of adaptive facades.

  • Biomimetics and thermo-adaptive façades : Comparative study of thermal adaptability in nature and engineering
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents results from a comparative study of selected biological and technical functions for thermal adaptability, which are based on an extensive literature review in biology and façade engineering. Several selected biological role models have been analysed in detail to identify their principles for dealing with thermal adaptation. These principles have been further abstracted through systematic biomimetic methods into use cases and compared with existing technical solutions and materials for thermally adaptive facades. Identified differences in the comparison are transferred to optimization suggestions for thermally responsive façade elements that are more effective and sustainable based on biomimetic measures.

  • Multi-active façade for refurbishments of residential buildings
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Façade Design and Engineering. - 2213-3038. ; 4:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reflects results from the technology screening and analyses of passive and active measures applied to large scale residential building refurbishments, focusing on the facade. This work is part of the research study ‘multi-active façade' that focuses on the development of an innovative facade concept suitable for the refurbishment challenges that the ambitious Swedish housing programme "Miljonprogrammet" of the 1960s to 1970s is facing now. The objective is to identify those measures for energy efficient facade refurbishments of a building concept that uses multifunctional solutions, while an upgrading towards a highly energy efficient standard is economically limited. Two criteria are in the centre of the investigations: “Multi-active” and “prefabrication” in the realm of cost-effectiveness and minimal-invasive refurbishment. Hereby, "passive" measures, such as adaptive thermal insulation or thermal puffer zones useable as extended living areas, are analysed in the context of their performance effectiveness in cold climates. The potential of “active” measures, such as semi-decentralized ventilation or solar energy technologies, is analysed in regards to utilize existing infrastructure, decentralized functionality and local sources at its optimum. All measures shall provide a high comfort and performance out of the façade. The facade is also meant to be a “plug and play” system allowing fast mounting and high archi-tectural flexibility. Framing criteria are sustainability and - critical for the success of refurbishments – economic replicability. The benefits of such energy renovation, often not considered in the decision making process, shall become visible by life cycle assessments and performance analyses. The analyses in this article contributes to the ongoing process in these goals, drawing conclusions for the replicability of selected active and passive solutions.

  • Energy Efficient and Study Promoting Lighting at High School: Preliminary Results
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 9783902842497 ; , s. 772-779
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedA correct lighting solution guarantees appropriate working conditions, while saving energy. Today it is well-known that the light influences our visual perception, our emotions and our biological system, thus our health and productivity. Four identical classrooms of a high school in Helsingborg, Sweden, were equipped with two different lighting concepts: classic pendants with T5 fluorescent tubes and a new diffuse light LED system. A grand total of 72 students aged between 17 and 18 years, were occupying the rooms over the academic year. The light environment, the electricity consumption, the students’ feelings and their circadian rhythm were monitored. Compared with the fluorescent installation, the LED system appears to do not have negative effects on the students, all the while saving energy.

  • Cultural Heritage : Changing Ideas on Compensation in Planning
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compensation measures are a new method for handling impact on cultural heritage in land use planning. The idea with compensation measures can be understood as an extension of the polluter pays principle. Today, compensation measures are mainly used when natural environments are damaged by development, but it is also possible to use compensation measures when a project results in negative impact on cultural heritage. However, there is a lack of experience in using compensation when it comes to the latter. In our work as heritage consultants, we have experienced difficulties in implementing compensa-tion measures in projects and assignments. Since 2013, we have organised a research project dealing with compensation measures and cultural heritage; aiming towards a new practice and better use of planning instruments. With this paper, we want to share our results from four case studies where development impact on cultural heritage has led to discussions about, and imple-mentation of, compensation measures. By using case studies from four different types of development, we wanted to find patterns in the use of compensation measures in planning processes. The results show an uncertainty in understanding compensation as a concept. This is due to an absence of practice dealing with compensation measures; cultural heritage values are not addressed in a proper way in negotia-tions over land access. Several instruments for compensation measures in planning processes can actually be found in the law and land use of the Swedish planning system, but they are not being used properly, which results in a negative impact on the cultural heritage. After two years of analysing and discussing our case studies in workshops and conferences, we have concluded that there is a strong need for clarifying planning instruments and for developing a professional practice dealing with compensa-tion measures.
