• Towards a digital epistemology : Aesthetics and modes of thought in early modernity and the present age
• 2020
• Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This book explores the concept of digital epistemology. In this context, the digital will not be understood as merely something that is linked to specific tools and objects, but rather as different modes of thought. For example, the digital within the humanities is not just databases and big data, topic modelling and speculative visualizations; nor are the objects limited to computer games, other electronic works, or to literature and art that explicitly relate to computerization or other digital aspects. In what way do digital tools and expressions in the 1960s differ to the ubiquitous systems of our time? What kind of artistic effects does this generate? Is the present theoretical fascination for materiality an effect or a reaction to a digitization? Above all: how can early modern forms such as the cabinets of curiosity, emblem books and the archival principle of pertinence contribute to the analyses of contemporary digital forms?

• Science and the changing conventions of anatomical representation
• 2017
• Ingår i: Death. - London : Thames & Hudson. - 0500519714
• Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
• Death is an inevitable fact of life. Throughout the centuries, humanity has sought to understand this sobering thought through art and ritual. The theme of memento mori informs medieval Danse Macabre, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Renaissance paintings of dissected corpses and “anatomical Eves,” Gothic literature, funeral effigies, Halloween, and paintings of the Last Judgment. Deceased ancestors are celebrated in the Mexican Day of the Dead, while the ancient Egyptians mummified their dead to secure their afterlife. Yet the representation of the dead is intrinsically tied to conventions of representation, ideology, politics and social practices.

• Landscapes of Technology Transfer : Swedish Ironmakers in India 1860–1864
• 2004
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• In the early 1860s three Swedes, Nils Wilhelm Mitander,Julius Ramsay and Gustaf Wittenström, were engaged by theBritish to build and run charcoal-based ironworks in India. These works, the Burwai Iron Works of the British Government inthe case of Mitander and the privately owned Kumaon Iron Worksin the case of Ramsay and Wittenström, were both to bebased on the most modern European technology. The projects werepioneering in Indian ironmaking. The ambitions were high andstakes big, but after only a few years the projects were closedand the Swedes returned home.Landscapes of Technology Transferpresents a detailedstudy of the Kumaon and Burwai Iron Works, from their firstconception to their final closure. The investigation isbasically empirical and a fundamental question is: Why were theworks never brought into full and continuous production? The ironworks projects should be considered as processes oftechnology transfer rather than fully fledged and completedtransfers. In spite of this lack of success, or maybe becauseof it, the history of the ironworks and the Swedes also forms afruitful case to put other questions of wide relevance. Itexposes workings and effects of colonialism and offers anexplanation of the late development of India's iron and steelindustry and analyses of the complex totality forming theprerequisites for a successful transfer of technology. The longtraditions of bloomery ironmaking in India and ismarginalisation is also discussed.Landscapes of Technology Transferis a comprehensiveempirical study. From a local and individual perspective ittraces lines of connection across boundaries of time andgeography. The historical landscapes of technology transfer aredescribed in their cultural, social, economic and politicaldimensions and the thesis underlines the importance of a closeacquaintance with local settings and conditions, where historyis manifested in a physical presence. The remains of theironworks and theirlocal landscapes in present-day India areused as a central source for writing their histories. There isalso a strong emphasis on the use of photographs and drawingsas sources. The outcome of the projects was the result of the interplaybetween the local and the global, between a diversity ofconcrete factors influencing the construction of the works andtheir running and their colonial character. The studyemphasises the importance of technological systems andnetworks, both on a micro and a macro level. On a local leveldemanding logistics, a sometimes adverse climate, theprocurement of charcoal and iron ore in sufficient quantitiesand the build up of knowledge of ironmaking posed serious butnot insurmountable difficulties. Most obstacles were overcomealready during the first few years of the 1860s, the period ofthe Swedes, but to put the works into full and continuousproduction would have needed perseverance and purposefulefforts to support and protect the iron production, at leastduring an initial period. In the end the position of India as acolonial dependency, subjected to the primacy of Britishinterests, set the limits of the projects.Key words:History of technology, industrial heritagestudies, industrial archaeology, technology transfer, diffusion, technological systems, landscapes of technology, iron and steel, charcoal iron, direct and indirect ironmaking, bloomeries, 19th century, industrial history, industrialisation, de-industrialisation, underdevelopment, colonialism, India, Sweden, Great Britain, global history, annales.

• Neptunus and To Løver : An Archaeological, Archival, and Dendrochronological Survey of Two Danish Prize Ships, Scuttled in the Stockholm Archipelago in 1659
• 2024
• Ingår i: Acta Archaeologica. - 0065-101X .- 1600-0390. ; 94:1, s. 176-188
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report the archaeological survey, dendrochronological analysis, and archival research concerning two shipwrecks located in shallow waters outside Vaxholm in the Stockholm Archipelago, Baltic Sea. According to oral tradition, the two wrecks are the remains of Neptunus and To Løver, two former Danish warships that were taken as prizes at the battle of Fehmarn in 1644. The Swedish navy then used the two ships until 1659, when they were reportedly scuttled as a blockage along the sea route towards Stockholm. Before being intentionally scuttled, the two ships drifted away and sank. The work presented in this article confirms the substance of the tradition and reports that substantial portions of the two ships are preserved. Moreover, the two wrecks shed light on the scuttling process and the construction of an underwater barrier.

• Weaving in Bronze Age Italy: the Case of the Terramare settlement at Montale
• 2020
• Ingår i: The Textile Revolution in Bronze Age Europe / edited by Serena Sabatini, Sophie Bergerbrant.. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 9781108493598 ; , s. 39-79
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The spread of textile tools in the Bronze Age settlements of the Po plain has hinted at the general existence of local textile production; however, the issue has not been investigated in depth at every site nor from a social, economic and cultural point of view. A thorough study of the archaeological evidence from Montale suggests that at specific locations textile manufacture could have been close to industrial-scale and focused on specific kinds of production. While there is an overwhelming prevalence of spinning tools, loom weights were also found at Montale and are here examined. Since most of the material included in the study was recovered during the 1800s and completely lacks contextual information, its interpretation is attempted on a typological and comparative basis. Adopting a community of practice model as a frame of reference, it is argued that not only were a variety of weaving methods carried out and developed at Montale, but also that one might reasonably envision specialisation within the northern Italian local and regional patterns of weaving.

• Medieval boat and ship finds from the former Norwegian province of Bohuslän: presentation and analysis
• 2022
• Ingår i: Revue de l'Archéologie du Bateau. - 2728-0861 .- 2728-4751. ; 3, s. 9-58
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper seeks to present, analyse, and discuss the entire body of medieval boat- and shipwreck data from the former Norwegian province of Bohuslän in present-day Sweden. This data currently comprises 11 wrecks dating between the 1230s and the first part of the 1500s. The analysis focuses on the questions of dating, building technique, hull size, provenance, and findspot. The results show that the vast majority of these wrecks constitute the remains of large sea-going vessels from Central and Western Europe, which underlines the growing importance of the Bohuslän coast as a transit route for international trade during this period. Another major finding, discussed in the present paper, is the fact that the bulk of the wrecked vessels is located in what may be defined as harbour or ‘near harbour’ contexts.

• The Marstrand Cannon: The earliest evidence of shipboard artillery in Europe?
• 2023
• Ingår i: The Mariner's Mirror. - 0025-3359 .- 2049-680X. ; 109:3, s. 260-282
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Current knowledge concerning the introduction of shipboard artillery in Europe is limited. A small, muzzle-loading cast copper-alloy gun recovered off Marstrand on the west coast of Sweden may, however, provide some important leads regarding this development. Radiocarbon analysis of a piece of cloth from the powder chamber, possibly the remains of a cartouche, suggests a date for the cannon in the fourteenth century, making it probably the earliest example of European shipboard artillery found so far. In this paper we give an account of our recent investigations of this important find, which also include a geochemical analysis of the metal used for the casting of the gun.
