  • Inorganic geochemistry of lake sediments : a review of analytical techniques and guidelines for data interpretation

    • Inorganic geochemistry is a powerful tool in paleolimnology. It has become one of the most commonly used techniques to analyze lake sediments, particularly due to the development and increasing availability of XRF core scanners during the last two decades. It allows for the reconstruction of the continuous processes that occur in lakes and their watersheds, and it is ideally suited to identify event deposits. How earth surface processes and limnological conditions are recorded in the inorganic geochemical composition of lake sediments is, however, relatively complex. Here, we review the main techniques used for the inorganic geochemical analysis of lake sediments and we offer guidance on sample preparation and instrument selection. We then summarize the best practices to process and interpret bulk inorganic geochemical data. In particular, we emphasize that log-ratio transformation is critical for the rigorous statistical analysis of geochemical datasets, whether they are obtained by XRF core scanning or more traditional techniques. In addition, we show that accurately interpreting inorganic geochemical data requires a sound understanding of the main components of the sediment (organic matter, biogenic silica, carbonates, lithogenic particles) and mineral assemblages. Finally, we provide a series of examples illustrating the potential and limits of inorganic geochemistry in paleolimnology. Although the examples presented in this paper focus on lake and fjord sediments, the principles presented here also apply to other sedimentary environments.

  • Halomethoxybenzenes in air of the Nordic region

    • Halomethoxybenzenes (HMBs) are a group of compounds with natural and anthropogenic origins. Here we extend a 2002–2015 survey of bromoanisoles (BAs) in the air and precipitation at Råö on the Swedish west coast and Pallas in Subarctic Finland. New BAs data are reported for 2018 and 2019 and chlorinated HMBs are included for these and some previous years: drosophilin A methyl ether (DAME: 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3,6-dimethoxybenzene), tetrachloroveratrole (TeCV: 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,6-dimethoxybenzene), and pentachloroanisole (PeCA). The order of abundance of HMBs at Råö was ΣBAs > DAME > TeCV > PeCA, whereas at Pallas the order of abundance was DAME > ΣBAs > TeCA > PeCA. The lower abundance of BAs at Pallas reflects its inland location, away from direct marine influence. Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) plots of log partial pressure (Pair)/Pa versus 1/T suggested distant transport at both sites for PeCA and local exchange for DAME and TeCV. BAs were dominated by distant transport at Pallas and by both local and distant sources at Råö. Relationships between air and precipitation concentrations were examined by scavenging ratios, SR = (ng m−3)precip/(ng m−3)air. SRs were higher at Pallas than Råö due to greater Henry's law partitioning of gaseous compounds into precipitation at colder temperatures. DAME is produced by terrestrial fungi. We screened 19 fungal species from Swedish forests and found seven of them contained 0.01–3.8 mg DAME per kg fresh weight. We suggest that the volatilization of DAME from fungi and forest litter containing fungal mycelia may contribute to atmospheric levels at both sites.

    • This review updates our knowledge on pressurised liquid extraction, PLE (also known as accelerated solvent extraction and pressurised fluid extraction) of persistent organic pollutants such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls from environmental matrices. The basic experimental set-up is presented, and parameters influencing the extraction process are discussed. PLE can be used for a broad range of applications, and clearly has the potential for replacing tedious classic extraction methods such as Soxhlet extraction. Copyright (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

  • Comprehensive assessment of organic contaminant removal from on-site sewage treatment facility effluent by char-fortified filter beds

    • The removal of organic contaminants from wastewater using cost-efficient and easily accessible methods have been increasingly studied in recent years. Most studies have focused on municipal sewage treatment plants; however, our study investigated treatment with char-fortified filter beds for on-site sewage treatment facilities (OSSFs). OSSFs are commonly used in rural and semi-urban areas all over the world to treat wastewater to reduce eutrophication and water-related diseases. To screen for a wide range of organic contaminants in order to improve the understanding of wastewater treatment efficiency and molecular properties, samples were taken from an OSSF field study site that used three filter types: sand, char-fortified sand, and char-fortified gas concrete. First, we screened for organic contaminants with state-of-the-art gas chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry-based targeted and untargeted analysis and then we developed quantitative structure-property relationship models to find the key molecular features responsible for the removal of organic contaminants. We identified 74 compounds, of which 24 were confirmed with reference standards. Amongst these 74 compounds were plasticizers, UV stabilizers, fragrances, pesticides, surfactant and polymer impurities, pharmaceuticals and their metabolites, and many biogenic compounds. Sand filters that are sometimes used as a last treatment step in OSSFs can remove hydrophobic contaminants. The addition of biochar significantly increases the removal of these and a few hydrophilic compounds (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, α = 0.05). Gas concrete did not appear to be suitable for the removal of organic contaminants. This study showed that, besides hydrophobic effects, biodegradation is the most important removal pathway in long-term field applications. However, further improvements are necessary to remove very hydrophilic contaminants as they were not removed with sand and biochar-fortified sand.

  • Structure-property-function relationships of natural and engineered wood

    • The porous hierarchical structure and anisotropy of wood make it a strong candidate for the design of materials with various functions, including load bearing, multiscale mass transport, and optical and thermal management. In this Review, the composition, structure, characterization methods, modification strategies, properties and applications of natural and modified wood are discussed.The complex structure of wood, one of the most abundant biomaterials on Earth, has been optimized over 270 million years of tree evolution. This optimization has led to the highly efficient water and nutrient transport, mechanical stability and durability of wood. The unique material structure and pronounced anisotropy of wood endows it with an array of remarkable properties, yielding opportunities for the design of functional materials. In this Review, we provide a materials and structural perspective on how wood can be redesigned via structural engineering, chemical and/or thermal modification to alter its mechanical, fluidic, ionic, optical and thermal properties. These modifications enable a diverse range of applications, including the development of high-performance structural materials, energy storage and conversion, environmental remediation, nanoionics, nanofluidics, and light and thermal management. We also highlight advanced characterization and computational-simulation approaches for understanding the structure-property-function relationships of natural and modified wood, as well as informing bio-inspired synthetic designs. In addition, we provide our perspective on the future directions of wood research and the challenges and opportunities for industrialization.

  • Innovative aryl-based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent for efficient removal of dyes and nanoplastics

    • Efficient absorption is a highly important strategy to remove environmental pollutants (i.e., dyes and nano plastics), which relays on the development of innovative and sustainable absorbents. Herein, we designed an innovative aryl-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) using diphenylamine (DPA) and benzophenone (BZP) as the component at a molar ratio of 1:1, and this novel DES was denoted as DPA:BZP-1:1. The developed DPA:BZP-1:1 could efficiently adsorb RhB and PS nanoparticles from their aqueous solution/suspension, and the absorption efficiency could reach up to 97.3% and 80%, respectively. Notably, DPA:BZP-1:1 showed a higher absorption efficiency than commercial activated carbon. Experimental and computational results revealed that hydrogen bonding and 7C-7C stacking synergistically contributed to the excellent absorption ability of DPA:BZP-1:1 on dye Rhodamine B (RhB) and polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics. To the best our knowledge, this is the first study on efficient absorption of dye and nanoplastics by aryl-based DESs.

  • Life cycle environmental impacts of current and future battery-grade lithium supply from brine and spodumene

    • Life cycle assessment studies of large-scale lithium-ion battery (LIB) production reveal a shift-of-burden to the upstream phase of cell production. Thus, it is important to understand how environmental impacts differ based on the source and grade of extracted metals. As lithium is highly relevant to several current and next-generation cell chemistries, we reviewed the effect of varying grades in different sources of lithium (brine and spodumene) worldwide. The review covered the Ecoinvent database, scientific literature, and technical reports of several upcoming production facilities. The results showed that lower-grade lithium brines have higher environmental impacts compared to higher-grade brines. However, spodumene-based production did not show such a trend, due to different technical process designs of the facilities reviewed. Water use impacts are higher in lower-grade sources and are expected to increase with decreasing lithium concentration. This could specifically be an issue in brine-based production, where brine is extracted from already water scarce regions and evaporated, thus increasing the risk of freshwater availability. However, these aspects of water use are not addressed in existing life cycle impact assessment methods. In the context of large-scale LIB cell production, the reviewed lithium hydroxide production routes account for 5–15% of the climate change impacts.

  • Acetonitrile-Based Electrolytes for Rechargeable Zinc Batteries

    • Herein, Zn plating-stripping onto metallic Zn using a couple of acetonitrile (AN)-based electrolytes (0.5 mZn(TFSI)(2)/AN and 0.5 mZn(CF3SO3)(2)/AN) is studied. Both electrolytes show a reversible Zn plating/stripping over 1000 cycles at different applied current densities varying from 1.25 to 10 mA cm(-2). The overpotentials of Zn plating-stripping over 500 cycles at constant current of 1.25 and 10 mA cm(-2)are +/- 0.05 and +/- 0.2 V, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals that no decomposition product is formed on the Zn surface. The anodic stability of four different current collectors of aluminum foil (Al), carbon-coated aluminum foil (C/Al), TiN-coated titanium foil (TiN/Ti), and multiwalled carbon nanotube paper (MWCNT-paper) is tested in both electrolytes. As a general trend, the current collectors have a higher anodic stability in Zn(TFSI)(2)/AN compared with Zn(CF3SO3)(2)/AN. The Al foil displays the highest anodic stability of approximate to 2.25 V versus Zn2+/Zn in Zn(TFSI)(2)/AN electrolyte. The TiN/Ti shows a comparable anodic stability with that of Al foil, but its anodic current density is higher than Al. The promising reversibility of the Zn plating/stripping combined with the anodic stability of Al and TiN/Ti current collectors paves the way for establishing highly reversible Zn-ion batteries.
