  • Availability of Unused Computational Resources in an Ordinary Office Environment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers. - 0218-1266. ; 19:3, s. 557-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presented in this paper highlights an important issue that was subject for discussionsand research about a decade ago and now have gained new interest with the current advances ofgrid computing and desktop grids. New techniques are being invented on how to utilize desktopcomputers for computational tasks but no other study, to our knowledge, has explored theavailability of the said resources. The general assumption has been that there are resources andthat they are available. The study is based on a survey on the availability of resources in anordinary o±ce environment. The aim of the study was to determine if there are truly usableunder-utilized networked desktop computers available for non-desktop tasks during the off-hours. We found that in more than 96% of the cases the computers in the current investigationwas available for the formation of part-time (night and weekend) computer clusters. Finally wecompare the performance of a full time and a metamorphosic cluster, based on one hypotheticallinear scalable application and a real world welding simulation.

  • Reliability and Quality of Software Engineering in Manufacturing Industry : a case study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 19th International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2008.). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ( IEEE ). - 9781424436538
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software engineering has proposed the use of formal and industrial methods, models and tools within software industry for some time now. There are several good examples like the aircraft industry, branches of the military, the space shuttle development and the nuclear power plant industry that have come a long way with their software processes. However, there is still an ongoing dilemma of how to better introduce software processes within most regular production industry. In this paper we try to summaries our experiences of software processes and quality systems within the vehicle industry of northern Europe. A first investigating case study is conducted at a large software consulting company, focused on industrial software, and then we further investigate the software situation at one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in Scandinavia. We use a ten point list with adapted metrics to evaluate process quality and create a progress report of the work-flow and process implementation rate. Based on our results from the evaluation we also provide a first set of guidelines for how to level the differences in quality processes for hardware and software development.

  • Software architecture graphs as complex networks : a novel partitioning scheme to measure stability and evolution
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Information Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-0255 .- 1872-6291. ; 177:12, s. 2587-2601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The stability and evolution of the structure of consecutive versions of a series of software architecture graphs are analysed using the theory of complex networks. Brief comparisons are drawn between the scale-free behaviour and second order phase transitions. On this basis a software design metric Icc is proposed. This software metric is used to quantify the evolution of the stability vs. maintainability of the software through various releases. It is demonstrated that the classes in the software graph are acquiring more out-going calls than incoming calls as the software ages. Three examples of software applications where maintainability and continuous refactoring are an inherent part of their development process are presented, in addition to a Sun Java2 framework where growth and backward compatibility are the more important factors for the development. Further to this a projected future evolution of the software structure and maintainability is calculated. Suggestions for future applications to software engineering and the natural sciences are briefly presented.

  • From designing objects to designing fields : from control to freedom
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Digital Creativity. - 1462-6268 .- 1744-3806. ; 14:2, s. 74-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we want to explore Field as a concept and as a metaphor for understanding interactive systems. By interactive systems we mean both systems and artworks, where the user by interacting changes the course of events. We intend to show why we need new terms and why we consider Field to be a fruitful concept and term. Further we will show how the Field concept changes both our understanding of what we do as designers and composers and how we acknowledge our audience. We will exemplify the design consequences of the Field concept by going through some design considerations we made when designing the audio tactile installation Mufi.

  • Approaching CMM to an educational CDIO based software engineering process
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 8th International CDIO Conference, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, July 1 - 4, 2012.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software Engineering is probably one of the most recent engineering disciplines. As such there have been major requirements put on that discipline to undergo appropriate transformations from immaturity to higher levels of maturity. This does not only relate to matters of evolution of techniques, and usability, but also the process of developing the software of concern. The ability to succeed in a large scaled Software Engineering project is probably highly dependent on the ways of working, that is, on the working process that fulfils the project. The Capability Maturity Model aims to assess the maturity of a software process, and serves as a guidance to improve such processes. Maturity here relates to degrees of formality and optimization, from ad hoc driven processes, via defined process structures, to active process optimization.Seen in a perspective of Software Engineering education we can see that it is of high importance that students get exhaustive practice in project based work. Several working process models of that are proposed in the context of Software Engineering research. Following such models may increase the probability of project success, both in industry and in educational projects. Still, a process with inherent self-reflecting mechanisms may increase such probability even further, with effect on quality of both work and product. This contribution will shed light on the working process of students, where self-reflection, self-motivation, and process improvement are put in focus. A model for this has been the Capability Maturity Model where reflecting over working processes aims to increase grades of process maturity and quality.

  • Ethics and responsibilities in a CDIO based software engineering process
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International CDIO Conference, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Cambridge, Massachusetts, June 9 – 13, 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The great impact that Software Engineering has had on society during the latest decades has put demands on that discipline to become a mature, as well as a trustworthy engineering discipline. Here, the so called, software engineering Code of Ethics has been introduced to encourage such development. The Code of Ethics has a prime focus on the Public, and a secondary focus on co-operation and development. While the Code of Ethics in first place concerns Software Engineers in professional work, it is interesting to see how this concept influences maturity and trustworthiness also to students in educational project based work. This contribution will cover on-going experiments in project based courses where students reflect on the Code of Ethics. Such reflections should have impact on team work, as well as on views on Software Engineering for the common public. The main question concerns how student’s project work may be improved through such reflections, to meet previously observed cases of low self-responsibility and effort. The contribution covers case studies of CDIO based projects, as well as the concept of the Code of Ethics of Software Engineering in itself.According CDIO, using the Code of Ethics in education should have relevance to several points of the CDIO syllabus, such as, 2.4 Attitudes, Thought and Learning, and 2.5 Ethics, Equity and Other responsibilities. The case studies as such, furthermore relate to aspects such as team work and communication, besides the core of the CDIO intension of driving student projects.
