  • Selling (the idea of) mediatization : Contemporary technology discourse and the indispensability of mobile media in work/life
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NordMedia: Mediated Realities – Global Challenges.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hitherto, and mainly by way of ethnographic studies, mediatization research has informed us about the relevance, influence, and role of media in various spheres of social life. Less is known, however, about how mediatization is discursively constructed. The relevance of constructivist approaches to mediatization has been explicated e.g. by Krotz (2017), who calls for critical mediatization studies that consider the economic interests of mediatization stakeholders, including the ICT industry. Against this backdrop, this paper scrutinizes what the alleged ‘mobility revolution’ entails according to some of those who would benefit the most from such a revolution. More concretely, the paper studies the discursive practices of three leading corporations in the mobile communications sector: IBM, Huawei, and Ericsson. Stimulated by critical mediatization theory as well as related accounts of the (technology) discourse-reality relationship, the paper asks: if mobile media changes ‘everything’ in life – whose lives are being changed? If mobile media are ‘indispensable’ to modern ways of living – what are they supposed to do? Ultimately, the paper speaks to the theme of this special issue by interrogating how contemporary mobile technology discourse contributes to the (re-)production of social space. Findings suggest that mediatization is constructed as the response to an internal human drive for connectivity and as an inexorable natural force. Three sub-discourses on mobile technology are identified: ‘technologies of cosmos’, ‘technologies of self’, and, ultimately, ‘technologies of life’. Altogether, these sub-discourses disclose and reinforce the hegemonic nature of mediatization by communicating the indispensability of mobile media in modern – notably, urban and privileged – lives. In addition to providing answers to the study’s empirical questions, the paper includes a discussion about the potential implications of existing discourse overlaps between ICT companies and mediatization theorists, as well as a sketch for an agenda for the ‘discursive turn’ in mediatization studies.

  • Ontological assumptions and generalizations in qualitative (audience) research
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - London : Sage. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 23:3, s. 275-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In media and communication studies, a number of social science and humanistic perspectives meet. As a multidisciplinary field it tends, however, to borrow methods from diverse disciplines and theoretical schools quite eclectically, without taking into consideration the fact that they may be based on various basic implicit assumptions. Underlying the methods there are quite different suppositions about the nature of reality, and about the nature of knowledge and how to gain knowledge. We rarely make that explicit when using specific methods or combinations of methods. The aim of this article is to discuss qualitative research and focus on ontological assumptions behind our methodological arguments and choices. Generalization, often seen as the Achilles heel of qualitative research, will also be brought up and its relation to ontological positions will be clarified. Qualitative audience research will be used to concretize the discussion, but the problems discussed will be of a more general nature and valid for qualitative research in general.

  • Participatory journalism - the (r)evolution that wasn't. Content and user behavior in Sweden 2007-2013.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1083-6101. ; 20:3, s. 295-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A contemporary debate in media studies concerns participation and empowerment, and to what extent digital media shift power to the citizens. This study assesses the long-term viability of participatory journalism using Swedish content and user data. Inclusion of comments and blog-links on news sites increased from 2007 to 2010, and decreased rather dramatically from 2011 onward. Posting user comments or writing blogs have never been activities that have appealed to a majority of the Swedes. Participatory journalism seems to have decreasing value to producers and little appeal to users. A shift in how power is distributed in the public sphere is absent. This is not primarily a problem of reluctant producers but, more importantly, a lack of interest from users.

  • H-Day 1967 : An alternative perspective on "propaganda" in the historiography of public relation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Public Relations Review. - : Elsevier. - 0363-8111 .- 1873-4537. ; 45:2, s. 236-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents an alternative perspective regarding the concept of “propaganda” in the historiography of public relations. Recent scholars of public relations have rightly criticized early attempts to write the field’s history as a linear progression, from propaganda to excellence. At the same time, however, these recent scholars have come to accept a linear conceptual change, and that “propaganda” became an impossible term in liberal democratic countries in the 1960s. By using the empirical case of the massive communication efforts initiated by the Swedish Commission on Right-Hand Traffic, which was assigned to implement right-hand traffic in 1967, this article shows that the concept of “propaganda” both occurred frequently and was used in a neutral sense. To deepen the understanding of this alternative perspective, the article both presents how the historical actors conceptualized their work, and describes how the communication work of the Commission was performed.
