  • The effect of missing data on wind resource estimation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 36:7, s. 4505-4517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investment in renewable energy sources requires reliable data. However, meteorological datasets are often plagued by missing data, which can bias energy resource estimates if the missingness is systematic. We address this issue by considering the influence of missing data due to icing of equipment during the winter on the wind resource estimation for a potential wind turbine site in Norway. Using a mean-reverting jump-diffusion (MRJD) process to model electricity prices, we also account for the impact on the expected revenue from a wind turbine constructed at the site. While missing data due to icing significantly bias the wind resource estimate downwards, their impact on revenue estimates is dampened because of volatile electricity spot prices. By contrast, with low-volatility electricity prices, the effect of missing data on revenue estimates is highly significant. The seasonality-based method we develop removes most of the bias in wind resource and revenue estimation caused by missing data.

  • Ethics for Responsible Technologies
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this position paper, a tentative response to questions concerning the role of philosophy in conjunction with recent advancement within the field of HCI (Human Computer Interaction) will be discussed. At the core of our discussion are new demands for responsible research where philosophically informed HCI research can play a fundamental part. Our argument is that philosophically informed HCI research can serve as a foundation for assessing and deliberating relationships between digital designs and quality of life. In our view, such assessments have much to gain by perspectives and critiques already elaborated by HCI scholars. We briefly outline how, in our experience, the basis of Critical Theory and Feminism provides a bracketing foundation for educating and cultivating HCI research that anticipates and assesses potential implications and societal expectations with regard to digital designs.

  • Science out of Comfort : Ethics as an Act of Violence
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Discomfort, disturbance, disharmony and disgust tend to provoke traditional science and research, bringing about questions of truth in relation to what is to be seen as emotional contamination of results and knowledge production. But what if uncomfortableness is the deal breaker for training our sensibilities and judgement as an important compass of care and ethics? What if the disharmony is an important act of violence when performed on norms and discourses of hegemonic power? Aligned with the theme of this annual meeting we invite contributions that reflect on the extent and limits of our sensibilities as STS scholars, teachers, and activists. We especially seek contributions that speculate on and figure concepts like "dirt", "the uncomfortable" and "matters out of place" in order to attain new critical sensibilities through composition, intra-action and critical reflective practices. With the theme Science out of Comfort, we would like this panel to offer a track of contributions that explore phenomena and concerns that antagonize and ruffle in order to break free — in order to feel and sense how the world is made differently sense-able through multiple discourses and practices of knowledge-making, as well as that which evades the sensoria of technoscience and STS. We welcome contributions that explore how alternative forms of knowledge production can support new critical sensibilities in which disturbances and uncomfortable affects and emotions are used in order to slow down and make room for critical reflection and attention.

  • The Beauty of the beast : the matter of meaning in digitalization
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: AI & Society. - London : Springer. - 0951-5666 .- 1435-5655. ; 25:1, s. 27-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitalization reveals the world in new varieties and forms. This power to unveil not only transforms human outreach and actions, but also changes our conceptions; about whom we are, about our uses and about human horizons for sense-making. In this paper, I explore experience design and the aesthetic turn in contemporary research in human–computer interaction and interaction design. This rather recent interest in aesthetic experience is in my view a move away from a view of digitalization as instances of objects aligned in networks, with certain features, qualities and properties, towards an understanding of digitalization as a relation to the world, to itself, and to what it means to be human (e.g. Technology and the character of contemporary life. A philosophical inquiry. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1984, Holding on to reality. The nature of information at the turn of the millennium. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1999; Questioning technology. Routledge, New York, 1999; The question concerning technology and other essays. Harper and Row, New York, 1977; Technology and the lifeworld, from garden to earth. Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 1990). As such my attempt in this text is to outline a conceptual account concerning what it might mean to designate digitalization as experienced rather than as what we traditionally think of it—as a cause of what we perceive. The paper is based on some previous work suggesting that a focus on the beauty of digitalization (i.e. the beast) entails the possibility to investigate ambiguous meanings of digitalization, meanings that are intrinsic to digitalization but have so far received little or no attention. My suggestion is that there are aesthetic and/or sublime dimensions inherent in digitalization that involves the realization of meaning that are becoming increasingly important in both use and design of digital materials. Hence, the particular focus on aesthetics as implied by the title of this text refers to a pervasive quality harbouring meaning that through a phenomenological lens could be regarded as the material basis of digitalization. The paper concludes that it is crucial to conduct more thorough studies of the relationship between aesthetics and digitalization if we are truly interested in exploring the potential of digitalization in our lives.

  • Ignorance in public sector digital transformation - Empirical evidence and conjecture
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 24th Annual International Conference on Digital Government Research. - 9798400708374
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With digital government becoming increasingly relevant as a new mode of safeguarding relevance and operations of the public sector, previous research has highlighted the need for additional studies on the prerequisites of successful digital transformation. The current literature is laden with examples of said prerequisites, but so far there have been only limited empirical studies on the extent to which the prerequisites are known within public sector organizations. We study the ignorance of necessary prerequisites for digital transformation within public sector organizations through a quantitative survey conducted with 91 local authorities in Sweden in 2022. The study finds distinguishable nescient areas and patterns in the degrees of ignorance, which are then used for initial theorization and to discuss future avenues for research.

  • Sharing economy business models for sustainability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The predominant focus of academic research on the sharing economy has been on Airbnb and Uber; to this extent, the diversity of business models ascribed to the sharing economy has not yet been sufficiently explored. Greater conceptual and empirical research is needed to increase understanding of business models in the sharing economy, particularly attributes that deliver on its purported sustainability potential. Objective: We aimed to elaborate an improved sharing economy business modelling tool intended to support the design and implementation of sharing economy business models (SEBMs) with improved sustainability performance. Methods: We used a structured approach to business modelling, morphological analysis, to articulate relevant business model attributes. Our analysis was informed by a narrative literature review of business and platform models in the sharing economy. We also iteratively tested, refined, and evaluated our analysis through three structured opportunities for feedback. Results: The output of the morphological analysis was a sharing economy business modelling tool for sustainability, with stipulated preconditions and descriptions of all business model attributes. Conclusion: The sharing economy is not sustainable by default, so we must be strategic and deliberate in how we design and implement SEBMs. The sharing economy business modelling tool should be of interest not only to researchers and practitioners, but also to advocacy organisations and policymakers who are concerned about the sustainability performance of sharing platforms.
