  • Digital Interventions in Self-Determined Exercise Motivation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Book of Abstracts. ; , s. 6-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research confirming the beneficial effects of physical activity and warns about the risks of sedentary behavior are abundant in contemporary literature. Yet, humans have probably never been as sedentary as we are now. Nothing is more than a click away, we do not even have to leave the couch – food is delivered to our doors and we are able to both work and socialize digitally. Despite a huge amount and variety of health information available, it is obvious that a lot of people do not lead as healthy lives as they could. Most people are generally aware that regular exercise habits are beneficial from a health perspective, but apparently that knowledge is not enough to incorporate the behaviour into lifestyle routines. Exercise research has for the past 30 years steadily shown that as much as 50 per cent of exercise initiators drop out within 3-6 months. Hence, not even good intentions don’t seem to be sufficient for people to be able to adhere to exercise behaviours.Exercise adherence therefore seems to be a considerable challenge, and since adherence is closely related to motivational aspects it is important to understand how to construct interventions promoting motivation and commitment. Traditional exercise interventions and promotion programs often lack sound theory foundations, hence also falling short in terms of structure and adequate evaluation systems.  Theory based work enable a deeper analysis of the underlying (psychological) processes, providing a more profound understanding of why some behavior changes are successful and some are not. It also generates structure and content to the intervention and enables identification of contributing factors and in which part of the process each factor is significant. These aspects are not only important for face to face programs but also in e-health, in terms of how we design tools and services, thereby placing high demands on our ability in applying theory to practice. Theory can also help us tailor personalized tools and services in our interventions, e.g. by identifying stage of change, facilitating motivational climate and autonomy support or managing barriers and drop-out.In this project modern research in exercise motivation and behaviour change guides the design in developing a digital intervention package for the health industry (Tappa Service AB and Health Profile Institute AB). The main aims are to enhance knowledge about the psychological processes behind exercise adherence and to develop and test a theory based digital tool to support durable behavior change.

  • Exploring service system resources : the role of technology
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 46th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769548920 - 9781467359337 ; , s. 1317-1326
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper traces a firm’s transition from goods-dominant to service-dominant logic using a remote monitoring system. By adopting a service system perspective and tracing its main resources involved in value creation, we have examined the value propositions that are brought forth, and the roles the different resources play. We have shown how the introduction of a new technology in the form of an RMS has a potentially strong impact on the other three resources in the service system; organization, by grounding service processes in data collection and analysis; people, through changing trust relationships; and shared information, by becoming the system’s language, laws and measures. Thus, by paying specific attention to technology, we may also see and work with its potential.

  • Innovating social media : five strategies for successful digital entrepreneurship
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Innovation through Social Media. - Trondheim, Norge. - 9788232100880 ; , s. 119-126
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Swedish blogosphere, a high rate of blog readers and writers is woman. It includes some real success stories, where female bloggers are well established, widely known, and successful digital entrepreneurs. The study in this paper included 20 interviews with nine female bloggers, and results show upon five strategies for successful digital entrepreneurship: Out of the closet – from peaceful anonymity to strength to bloom on stage, Understanding the essence of technology – from constraint to transparency, Strategic cooperation between blogging peers, Informal relation management: positive encouragement and mentorship for newcomers, and finally, Becoming friends with your visitors.

  • Methodology for materiality : interaction design research through a material lens
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. - : Springer. - 1617-4909 .- 1617-4917. ; 18:3, s. 625-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasingly, human–computer interaction (HCI) is acknowledging the material dimensions of our subject. In doing so, a wide repertoire of methods is currently being explored for conducting interaction design research through a material lens. These methods range from material studies and studies in material cultures to methods borrowed from craft, designerly approaches to interaction design, sketching in hardware approaches, and so on. While we acknowledge these important attempts to approach the material dimensions of interaction design, it should also be noted that there is a lack of more systematic studies of methods that are, can be, or have been applied within HCI and interaction design to specifically explore interaction design through a material lens. So, there is a need for a methodology that acts as a guideline to material-centered interaction design research. In this paper, we address this need. More specifically, this paper contributes to this current state by presenting a methodology for methodological explorations in material-centered interaction design research. The development of this proposed methodology takes a point of departure in the methods available and applied so far. With grounding in design theory, this paper organizes these methods into a four-dimensional structure to guide deliberate choices of methods in different phases of interaction design research projects—that is, it serves as a framework for research design. The organizing structure for the proposed methodology follows the simple dialectic tradition in design to work back and forth between details and wholeness, materials and textures. In this paper, we describe the four dimensions of our framework and how these can be useful to guide research design aimed at advancing our understanding of the material dimensions of HCI. We illustrate how the proposed structure can be practically useful—both in advancing our studies of interaction design through a material lens and show how it brings us back to the roots of our profession—that is, back to a focus on the materials, the fundamental components of any computational composition.
