Slow Tech : The bridge between computer ethics and business ethics
2014
Ingår i: Proceedings 11th International Conference on human Choice and computers, HC11, 2014. - Berlin/Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783662442074 ; , s. 92-106
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper addresses the difficult task of implementing the concept of Slow Tech, that is,information and communication technology (ICT) that is good, clean and fair, in a businessenvironment. It investigates the democratic, environmental, and social challenges currently facingICT vendors. More specifically, it examines the opportunities available for these companies to useSlow Tech as a bridging mechanism between their Computer Ethics and their Business Ethicsstrategies, based on Corporate Social Responsibility. Last but not least, it highlights what some"next step" questions for further investigation and implementation might be and the challenges ofimplementing these.

Management of Information Systems Outsourcing : Evaluation of Lessons Learned from a Boundary Spanning Perspective
2012
Ingår i: Electronic Journal of Information Systems Evaluation. - Reading, UK : Academic Publishing International. - 1566-6379. ; 15:1, s. 63-73
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
Even if outsourcing is a well-researched phenomenon, it can be stated that evaluation studies on IS outsourcing relationships are scarce. From a description of two IS outsourcing relationship cases, a set of lessons learned are presented. A boundary spanning perspective is then used when evaluating these lessons learned in the client-supplier outsourcing relationships and thereby adding a “new” theoretical perspective on outsourcing relationships. The evaluation is concluded in a set of propositions that present the boundary spanning perspective of the lessons learned. The aim of these propositions is to act as both a guiding tool for how to further develop boundary spanning roles in outsourcing relationships and to act as a base for future research on outsourcing relationships.

Situational Method Engineering
2014
Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt) abstract
While previously available methodologies for software – like those published in the early days of object technology – claimed to be appropriate for every conceivable project, situational method engineering (SME) acknowledges that most projects typically have individual characteristics and situations. Thus, finding the most effective methodology for a particular project needs specific tailoring to that situation. Such a tailored software development methodology needs to take into account all the bits and pieces needed for an organization to develop software, including the software process, the input and output work products, the people involved, the languages used to describe requirements, design, code, and eventually also measures of success or failure. The authors have structured the book into three parts. Part I deals with all the basic concepts, terminology and overall ideas underpinning situational method engineering. As a summary of this part, they present a formal meta-model that enables readers to create their own quality methods and supporting tools. In Part II, they explain how to implement SME in practice, i.e., how to find method components and put them together and how to evaluate the resulting method. For illustration, they also include several industry case studies of customized or constructed processes, highlighting the impact that high-quality engineered methods can have on the success of an industrial software development. Finally, Part III summarizes some of the more recent and forward-looking ideas. This book presents the first summary of the state of the art for SME. For academics, it provides a comprehensive conceptual framework and discusses new research areas. For lecturers, thanks to its step-by-step explanations from basics to the customization and quality assessment of constructed methods, it serves as a solid basis for comprehensive courses on the topic. For industry methodologists, it offers a reference guide on features and technologies to consider when developing in-house software development methods or customising and adopting off-the-shelf ones.

Exploring REA and Open-edi Business Frameworks for Service Modeling
2010
Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - : CEUR. ; , s. 106-119
Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt) abstract
Contemporary business collaborations foster enterprises to make their offerings available to partners and consumers as e-services. In this setting, high-level enterprise models, such as business models, provide an economically aware perspective for elicitation of business services, and thereby, e-services. Recently, REA and Open-edi business frameworks have been jointly considered to provide the Open-edi Business Transaction Ontology (OeBTO) for exploring concepts, relationships and actors involved in business collaborations. In this study, we use these frameworks and supporting architectures to propose a service-centric business model. From a model-based development perspective, the model that we propose is intended to be transformed to a system-centric service model, and further to Web service specifications and coordinations. The purpose of this study is primarily aimed toward an explorative and business-founded identification of services. An example from the insurance business sector is used to argument the way we ground and apply our proposed method.

Computers, time and speed : Five slow tech case studies
2014
Ingår i: ICT and society. - Berlin/Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783662442074 ; , s. 122-135
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
This chapter examines briefly the notions of time and speed. It introduces the notion of Slow Tech:information technology that is good, clean and fair, and places an especial emphasis on technologythat is clean. This chapter does not delve deep into the Slow Tech concept. Rather, it highlights a setof arguments about why speed is not always important or necessary. People are now increasinglybeginning to think about much longer periods and phases that may extend at least as long as theexistence of human beings on the globe. As illustrations, the chapter explores five specific casestudies. Each comes from a different location, yet all describe global implications and challenges. One example is in fact a mathematical model. Two sites, in sympathy with the location of theHuman Choice and Computing 11 (HCC11) conference, are from Scandinavia – one from Onkalo,Finland, and a second from Svalbard, a northern Norwegian island. A further two cases are from theUnited States of America. The logic behind these five case studies strengthens the arguments aboutwhy − with the support of the Slow Tech concept − it is increasingly important for society and itsmany stakeholders to question the current information and communication technology (ICT)obsession with speed and rethink the relationships between society and technology.

The Informed Gaze : On the Implications of ICT-Based Surveillance
2013
Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt) abstract
Information and communication technologies are not value-neutral. I examine two domains, public health surveillance and sustainability, in five papers covering: (i) the design and development of a software package for computer-assisted outbreak detection; (ii) a workflow for using simulation models to provide policy advice and a list of challenges for its practice; (iii) an analysis of design documents from three smart home projects presenting intersecting visions of sustainability; (iv) an analysis of EU-financed projects dealing with sustainability and ICT; (v) an analysis of the consequences of design choices when creating surveillance technologies. My contributions include three empirical studies of surveillance discourses where I identify the forms of action that are privileged and the values that are embedded into them. In these discourses, the presence of ICT entails increased surveillance, privileging technological expertise, and prioritising centralised forms of knowledge.

Business models at work in the mobile service sector
2012
Ingår i: iBusiness. - : Scientific Research Publishing, Inc.. - 2150-4075 .- 2150-4083. ; 4:1, s. 84-92
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper aims to enhance the knowledge of business models in the mobile service sector by exploring their key mechanisms and underlying components. By combining the business model literature with empirical interview-based case studies of 69 business models in the mobile service sector, it illustrates the findings of a longitudinal case study of a business model design attached to an iPhone application. A model for managing business model design in an open innovation context of mobile services is proposed. The model extends earlier frameworks by adding contingency aspects and the view of core resources for addressing logics in the dynamic sector. Findings highlight the importance of ventures in the mobile service sector continually managing the business model design in order to support the sustainability of their business models.
