Coping with complexity : exploring modularity and flexibility in IT infrastructure adaptation
2010
In: Industrial informatics design, use and innovation. - Hershey : IGI Global. - 9781615206926 - 9781616923143 - 9781615206933 ; , s. 85-101
Book chapter (other academic/artistic) abstract
This chapter explores issues associated with the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in process industries and the inherent tension between control and flexibility in IT infrastructures. A qualitative case study of the alignment between organizational elements and the ERP system was conducted. The study illustrates the complexities involved with IT infrastructure adaptation and the extensive organizational consequences accompanying process and data standardization. The main contribution to the body of knowledge on IT infrastructure is a suggestion that fit between the inherent standardization an ERP system conveys and processes in the host organization are key aspects, hence implementation is more likely to contribute with desired effects in relation to stable and universal processes. A prerequisite for accomplishing limitation of the scope of ERP systems to these processes is a truly modular system.

Beställarkompetens vid upphandling och utveckling av IT : Om kompetensframväxt i skuggan av kunskapsfragmentering
2010
Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic) abstract
Ever since IT started to become important and strategic assets in organizational practices, systems acquisitions have been a challenging and complex endeavor. There are seemingly never ending reports of unsuccessful IT acquisitions and lack of systems acquisition competence (beställarkompetens in Swedish). The aim of this thesis is to shed deeper light on what systems acquisition competence is about, and to present a framework for understanding its nature and premises in IT-projects. This thesis is grounded on three concurring problem areas. First, IT projects are notoriously prone to problems. This despite of decades of IS and ISD research on methods, project management, etc. While there is extensive knowledge about the development process, methods, techniques, tools, developers' skills and competence requirements, less is known about systems acquisition competence. Second, and following from the first, there are few established or generally agreed upon definitions, or substantial theories, of this distinct competency. Third, there is still a limited understanding of systems development from a learning or knowledge work point of view. This thesis deals with the concept of “beställarkompetens”, and theorizes the underlying empirical phenomena; knowledge work in IT project practices. Drawing on exploratory empirical work in an interpretive multiple case study, this thesis investigates 10 governmental IT projects, their outcomes and stakeholders perceptions of acquisition competency. This investigation was supported by theories of individual and organizational perspectives on learning, as well as knowledge theory, competence theory and systems development theory. This thesis presents a theoretical perspective suggesting that acquisition competence can be understood as an emergent quality of the system development process, that is, as dynamic rather than static knowledge. Further, it suggests that key stakeholders interaction, collaboration, situated learning and competence renewal are prime mechanisms to ensure sufficient systems acquisition competence and project performance. One important practical implication from this research is the identification of fragmentation of knowledge as a main threat to successful outcome of IT projects. The contribution is a theoretical framework useful for understanding “beställarkompetens” in systems development contexts, and a tentative theory of emergent competence.

Mobile Assisted Language Learning : A Literature Review
2012
In: mLearn 2012 - Mobile and Contextual Learning. - Helsinki. ; , s. 9-16
Conference paper (peer-reviewed) abstract
Mobile assisted language learning (MALL) is a subarea of the growing field of mobile learning (mLearning) research which increasingly attracts the attention of scholars. This study provides a systematic review of MALL research within the specific area of second language acquisition during the period 2007 - 2012 in terms of research approaches, methods, theories and models, as well as results in the form of linguistic knowledge and skills. The findings show that studies of mobile technology use in different aspects of language learning support the hypothesis that mobile technology can enhance learners’ second language acquisition. However, most of the reviewed studies are experimental and small-scale, conducted within a short period of time. There is also a lack of cumulative research; most theories and concepts are used only in one or a few papers. This raises the issue of the reliability of findings over time, changing technologies, and in terms of scalability. In terms of gained linguistic knowledge and skills, attention is primarily on learners’ vocabulary acquisition, listening and speaking skills and language acquisition in more general terms.

How to handle issues of security and privacy
2013
In: ICT-ethics: Sweden and Japan. - Linköping : LiU Tryck. - 9789175194318 ; , s. 54-60
Book chapter (peer-reviewed) abstract
Different ways to approach privacy and security are critically examined. The main question is how definitions may help us in our efforts to handle these issues in real life and allow us to create suitable and working system designs and policies. Given the controversial nature of privacy and security, and based on philosophical theory and psychological research, we have to focus on the ways, skills, methods and tools we adopt in order to create, revise and apply policies, guidelines, designs, rules and principles.

Tools and methods for security : Stimulating the skill to philosophize
2013
In: European Intelligence and Security Informatics Conference. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769550626 ; , s. 163-165
Conference paper (peer-reviewed) abstract
Finding optimal solutions to security issues is verydifficult or impossible. Conflicting interests and values decidewhat has to be done. Every thinkable answer contains both risksand possibilities. I our effort to find solutions we have always tonegotiate and make compromises. A dialectic process is necessaryin security in order to identify significant interests and values, and to formulate principles and policies. Handling security issuesand working for secure IT systems demand continuousadjustment to relevant values as well as the necessary personalskills and suitable group processes. Focusing on the method andmaking sure that the right way of proceeding has been adopted isthe way to get satisfactory answers to the problems of IT security. The philosophical method of deliberative thinking seems to be thebasis of such methods.

Slow tech : Towards good, clean and fair ICT
2013
In: The possibilities of ethical ICT. - Kolding : University of Southern Denmark. - 9788792646729 ; , s. 384-390
Conference paper (peer-reviewed) abstract
Slow tech is a new way of looking at technology. It means designing and developingtechnologies that are ‘slow’, with the aim of being good, clean, and fair. It has, as anaspiration, the design and use of a new kind of information and communicationtechnologies (ICT): ICT that is human-centred, and that takes into account both thelimits of the planet and those of human beings. The focus of this reflection paper is onICT that speaks to the needs of the environment and society, and is thus implicitlyethical. It contributes towards promoting slow tech to an audience of computerprofessionals and computer end-users.

The brave new world of socio-technical systems : Cloud computing
2013
In: The possibilities of ethical ICT. - Kolding : University of Southern Denmark. - 9788792646729 ; , s. 377-383
Conference paper (peer-reviewed) abstract
In this paper we propose an analysis of Cloud Computing as a new kind of socio-technical system. For many organizations, moving ICT from the capital expenditure line to the operational expenditure line, by using "ICT services on-demand" and paying them by consumption, is an opportunity. From another perspective Cloud Computing represents a big shift back towards centralized architectures where end-users and organizations will use on.demand resources provided by very large datacentres. Are we moving from the "autonomy" of the 1980's introduced by Personal Computing to the "heteronomy" of Cloud Computing of the XXI century? For analysing the main social and ethical issues related to Cloud Computing we propose a simple model based on the Socio-Technical Systems concept. The co-shaping between society and technology is clean-cut and can be a useful tool for users and organisations that are considering to enter into the world of ICT as-a-service. We finally investigate possible connections between our reflections about Cloud Computing and more deep ethical, philosophical, and psychological ways of addressing these issues.

From slow food to slow tech : A reflection paper
2013
In: ICT, society and human beings. - Prague : IADIS Press. - 9789728939915 ; , s. 141-145
Conference paper (peer-reviewed) abstract
Increasing challenges are facing the information society, particularly in terms of its sustainability and continuity. Humanbeings are finding it more and more difficult to cope with the accelerating speed of information and communicationtechnologies (ICT). Society has been seduced by a rapid pace of development of ICT, progressively celebrated year onyear for its growing speed and power. This reflection paper proposes a new way of thinking about ICT in the future: aslower, more careful, more considered, and more ethical manner (a slow tech approach). It concentrates on the need forslow tech: ICT that is good, clean, and fair. It then provides some additional reflections on how such an approach couldbe developed further.
