Children as Research partners in a Research circle

- This presentation is about a Swedish study in which two groups of young people are actors, one group as research partners and another group as respondents in a study about young people’s participation. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created with young people invited as research partners in the research circle by academic researchers. The innovative design of the study included young people in the knowledge construction about youth participation. The young research partners formulated the research questions and implemented a ‘Youth survey’ among other students in secondary and upper secondary schools. Respondents in the survey are 100 students (15-18y) from mainstream schools and special schools for the Hard-of Hearing. The aim of the study was to define young people’s perspectives on participation in school-life. The young people in the study identify to have friends, being able to exert influence and understanding as central aspects of participation. They describe that the experience of participation depend on their opportunities to enact agency, responsibility, and control. Access to a free and supportive communicative context, with the agency to contribute to the interaction and decision-making is key when promoting young people’s participation in school. In this presentation, the innovative research model, as well as the report written by the adolescents in the research circle will be presented.

- This article presents an interactive research methodology for young people's participation in research. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created and is described. The empirical example is from Sweden. Academic researchers invited young people to be research partners in a research circle. The asymmetrical relationship between the researchers and the young research partners made asymmetric responsibility and respect into central parts of the methodology. The interactive process in the research circle concerns research fundamentals: developing methodological knowledge, designing a study, how to formulate the research questions from the viewpoint of young people, how to analyze from a generational insider perspective, and how to handle institutionalized and asymmetric power relations in social knowledge formation.

- This thematic issue is devoted to how human service work may be influenced by accentuated administrative processes, as well as reinforced by digitalization, in contemporary society. The public sector has expanded the requirements of documentation, auditing and evaluation practices. Policy, problems and persons are shaped and enacted in meetings and documents. Meetings and documents comprise the forum for making highly important decisions for the individual client or for various categories of clients. Still, people’s participation in meetings and their reading and production of documents are often overlooked in studies of human service organizations. In this thematic issue, empirically-oriented researchers describe and analyze human service workers’ administrative routines, particularly focusing on processes of client inclusion and exclusion.

- The aim of the current vignette study was to examine how social workers assess adolescents with substance misuse problems, criminal behaviour and mental health difficulties, and how they make decisions about treatment interventions to reduce these problems. Earlier research has shown lack of knowledge concerning factors and processes that govern assessments and decisions in social work practice. In this anonymously administered survey, social workers in Stockholm, Sweden, were invited to assess fictitious youth issues. We found that social workers recognise the problems and needs of young people, but that they find it harder to link needs to evidence-based interventions. Also, there is a tendency to overrate alleged non-serious problems in the vignettes. We conclude that there is a need for increased knowledge about evidence-based methods and more structured procedures to broaden the basis for decisions.

- Förmågan och möjligheten att arbeta är viktig både för den enskilda
individen och för samhället. När en person helt eller delvis förlorar sin arbetsförmåga på grund av ohälsa ska olika aktörer i välfärdssamhället möjliggöra återgång i arbete. Sjukskrivnings- och rehabiliteringsprocessen blir i en del fall komplex beroende på variationer i aktörernas perspektiv på arbetsförmåga, de bedömningsmetoder som används och vilka regelverk som är tillämpbara. Kunskapsbaserade åtgärder för att främja återgång i arbete involverar i allmänhet arbetsplatsen som en central
aktör och arena för åtgärder, medan praktiken ofta är annorlunda.
Boken belyser förutsättningar för att implementera kunskapsbaserade utredningar och åtgärder i det svenska samhället, liksom komplexiteten
i dessa processer.Boken vänder sig till personer som arbetar med bedömning av arbetsförmåga och med åtgärder för att främja återgång i arbete. Målgrupper är studerande och professionella som i sin yrkesutövning inom till exempel primärvården, företagshälsovården eller inom privata rehabiliteringsenheter arbetar med sjukskrivningsprocesser och arbetslivsinriktad rehabilitering. Boken riktar sig också till arbetsgivare och arbetsledare som har ansvar för sjukskrivna medarbetares återgång i arbete.

- Frågor om våld i nära relationer är numera vanligt förekommande i media, politiska debatter, offentliga utredningar och lagändringar. Men trots detta uppmärksammas sällan äldre personers utsatthet för våld. Anledningarna kan vara flera, men tanken på att äldre kan utsättas för våld i en nära relation är för många avlägsen.Äldre personers utsatthet för våld i nära relationer vill synliggöra att olika typer av våld förekommer mot och bland äldre personer. Men det allra viktigaste är att ge kunskap om hur omgivningen kan uppmärksamma detta och förhindra våld, samt ge hjälp och stöd.
