  • Sustainable service-based business models - Exploring the potential of digital technologies in industrial companies
  • 2021
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Industrial companies are continuously looking for solutions to increase their competitive advantage and become sustainable. Many industrial companies have prioritised economic sustainability as means of success. However, recent decades have revealed many external pressures and these have highlighted the need for more sustainable organisations. The growing interest in sustainable alternatives has shed light on various business models which promote balance and support the path towards a more circular economy. This thesis aims to promote sustainable, service-based business models by identifying the challenges and opportunities encountered in this transition. Further, it explores the methods, tools and frameworks available in the literature and identifies the sustainability-related elements and KPIs. The results showcase a list of challenges faced by industrial companies in developing service-based business models. For instance, there is a lack of consensus on terminology for business models, sustainability and digital technologies. Although the studies included in this thesis are from different industry sectors, the challenges found were similar. The increasing availability of digital technologies and engagement of global organisations may support the development of service-based business models. In addition, new technological opportunities, regulations and incentives can promote collaboration and responsibility in companies. This thesis systematises the existing methods, tools and frameworks and shows the extent to which they support companies as they move towards sustainability. It also provides recommendations and relevant considerations for the future development of new methods and tools. This research contributes to the systematisation of knowledge gained from the different terminologies used to refer to service-based business models. It also captures unprecedented experiences from multiple industries, such as recyclers and service providers in the maritime sector. This thesis’ findings can inform and support companies on their path to understanding and implementing service-based business models.

  • Start-ups in Business Networks: Resource Development through Interaction
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis deals with start-ups’ processes of relating to existing components in the business network in order to develop their innovations and become embedded in it. Previous research has shown that technology-based start-ups rely on external resources through collaborative business partners in order to create innovation. However, how this is done and what effects these collaborations have on the innovation and network itself is an area that needs further study. This licentiate thesis therefore aims to contribute to extending the knowledge of the interactive innovation process for technology-based start-ups by taking the starting point in the start-ups’ resources and how they are combined in the business network. The theoretical starting point is taken in the Industrial Network Approach to industrial markets and, more specifically, the process of resource development through interaction in the business network by seeing the innovations as a result of a number of resource combinations taking place in it. The method used is a case study of three cases that illustrate three different innovation processes for technology-based start-ups to capture resource development in business networks over time. This study shows that these start-ups are in great need of adapting their resource features to fit into the existing resource constellations in the developing, producing and using settings in order to innovate. It is also relevant to approach collaboration partners that are willing to adapt their own resource collections to allow the start-up’s resources to fit into their existing resource structures. Furthermore, the adaptations made in one resource interface impacts other connected resource interfaces, causing friction. Specifically, and as this study reveals, relating in business networks is a way of handling friction, which is a continuous interplay between triggers and changes in the resource interfaces. As a result, the important part lies in creating an understanding of how a specific change in one specific resource interface triggers a new change in a connected resource interface over time. From a managerial point of view, the start-up needs to be aware of the importance of working with proximity of the three settings of developing, producing and using to allow it to embed its resources into the business network. Furthermore, it is relevant to find collaboration partners that are willing to make adaptations to their own resource collections. From a theoretical point of view, this study contributes additional knowledge to the study of resource development as a process by exhibiting the underlying mechanisms of why changes in resource interfaces take place and their consequences.

  • Business model changes in green construction: A literature review
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 26th Annual Conference of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management, ARCOM 2010; Leeds; United Kingdom; 6 September 2010 through 8 September 2010. - 9780955239045 ; , s. 997-1006
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, concepts such as green or sustainable construction have been much emphasized in the literature. At present there is no systematic study on how these changes in the construction industry are expected to alter the business model of a construction-related company. This paper is the first attempt to remedy this situation by providing an overview of changes of business model elements as they have been dealt within the construction literature. The paper derives a set of constructs and reviews papers and books published after 1990. The preliminary results indicate that a) any business model element can change as a consequence of green construction; b) partner networks, core competency, value configuration and cost structure may be the most likely elements to change and c) some business model element and their changes may "go in pairs" such as core competency, value configuration and partner network on the one hand, and value proposition, cost structure and core competency on the other hand.

  • Re-thinking Innovation Measurement to Manage Innovation-Related Dichotomies in Practice
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: proceedings of the Continuous Innovation Network Conference – CINet 2012, Rome, Italy, September 17-18. - Rome, Italy : CINet. ; , s. 886-904
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation performance measurement has developed from focusing on issues of control and monitoring towards a more supportive role for managers on a strategic, informative and motivational level. Despite its potential to facilitate innovation management measuring provides a challenge in practice not the least when a company has the ambition to manage both radical and incremental innovation. This paper, based on literature review with empirical illustrations from three case studies, argues that these issues derives from the need to manage a number of dichotomies which are present due to the essential differences associated to each type of innovation. These dichotomies are related to time, uncertainty, flexibility and control. The implications on the design and use of an innovation performance measurement system are explored and analyzed through the lens of dichotomies. The study contributes to the innovation measurement theory and provides basis for an analytical framework aiming to support the design and implementation of innovation performance measurement in practice.

  • Unbundling cars to daily use and infrequent use vehicles - the potential role of car sharing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Energy Efficiency. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-646X .- 1570-6478. ; 11:6, s. 1433-1447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Car sharing is seen as an alternative to car ownership; however, for many households, this option may be unthinkable. In this study, we explore the idea of combining car sharing and vehicle ownership in order to change car purchase behavior to improve the environmental performance of the fleet. We consider the personal vehicle as a bundle of attributes. We look at the distinction between “daily use” and “infrequent use” attributes. “Infrequent use” features are those that are only needed occasionally, e.g., a larger trunk, all-wheel drive, seating for 7, and long vehicle range. If the vehicle attributes could be unbundled, the personal vehicle would include only those features needed on a daily basis, with car sharing providing the “infrequent use” features. We qualitatively explore what the car-sharing service would need to look like to cover the “infrequent use” needs and analyze if the existing services can provide these needs. We base our analysis on literature and interviews with experts and representatives from car sharing and rental car companies in California and Sweden. We find that car sharing today does not cover the needs for unbundling the vehicle. There are not enough “infrequent use” vehicles available in these services. However, new business models and the growth of peer-to-peer car sharing are already begun to widen the vehicle models available.

  • Impacts of variation management on cost-optimal investments in wind power and solar photovoltaics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy Focus. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-0229 .- 1755-0084. ; 32, s. 10-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work investigates the impacts of variation management on the cost-optimal electricity system compositions in four regions with different pre-requisites for wind and solar generation. Five variation management strategies, involving electric boilers, batteries, hydrogen storage, low-cost biomass, and demand-side management, are integrated into a regional investment model that is designed to account for variability. The variation management strategies are considered one at a time as well as combined in four different system contexts. By investigating how the variation management strategies interact with each other as well as with different electricity generation technologies in a large number of cases, this work support policy-makers in identifying variation management portfolios relevant to their context. It is found that electric boilers, demand-side management and hydrogen storage increase the cost-optimal variable renewable electricity (VRE) investments if the VRE share is sufficiently large to reduce its marginal system value. However, low-cost biomass and hydrogen storage, are found to increase cost-optimal investments in wind power in systems with a low initial wind power share. In systems with low solar PV share, variation management reduce the cost-optimal solar PV investments. In two of the regions investigated, a combination of variation management strategies results in a stronger increase in VRE capacity than the sum of the single variation management efforts.

  • Real-time information for operational disruption management in hinterland road transport
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1749-4729 .- 1749-4737. ; 9:4, s. 358-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Port hinterland transport literature has previously taken mainly a port perspective of operational disruption, for example delays or congestion, and as such lacks understanding of how real-time information can contribute to management of operational disruption outside the port. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to explore real-time information for operational disruption management in road hinterland transport. A qualitative single case study approach is adopted at a logistics service provider responsible for road hinterland transport. The findings show improvement potential in disruption management by applying real-time information. Mainly issues related to the detection of disruption are highlighted to generate insufficiencies for the operational disruption management. Furthermore, the focus of real-time information for the impact on goods flow, rather than disruptions in the surrounding environment of transport operations, was found to limit disruption management. The paper intends to contribute to the hinterland transport literature by broadening the understanding for management of operational disruption through use of real-time information.

  • It's all about the functionality: Psychological determinants of acceptance of energy efficient water taps in freshwater abundant urban areas
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy and Climate Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-2787. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global climate changes will intensify the competition for fresh water. Technologies for reducing household tap water consumption may be an effective measure for sustainable water consumption. However, such technologies may come with a potential perceived reduction in comfort. This field study thus examines whether and how tenants, who live in apartments in water abundant areas and have a standard cost for water included in their rent, accept reduction in tap-water comfort over a six-month period of technology familiarisation, A repeated questionnaire study (n = 38) was conducted to mesasure changes in acceptance and perceived functionality of water efficient faucets over time. We also tested to what extent motivational factors posited by the value-belief-norm (VBN) theory accounted for acceptance of hands-on experiences in the early-stage of familiarisation. Unlike the familiarisation hypothesis, our results show decreased acceptance for bathroom and kitchen faucets mediated by impaired perceived functionalities (in flow and temperature). No such changes were observed for shower faucets. Moreover, while the casual chain hypothesised by the VBN theory (i.e., moving from values to awareness of consequences to a personal norm of water conservation) is shown to account for acceptance, no ascription of responsibility is disclosed. Overreliance and boundary conditions for familiarisation effects are discussed.

  • A problem in the making: How firms formulate sharable problems for open innovation contests
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Creating and Capturing Value through Crowdsourcing. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780198816225 ; , s. 127-153
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Crowdsourcing in the form of innovation contests stimulates knowledge creation external to the firm by distributing technical, innovation-related problems to external solvers and by proposing a fixed monetary reward for solutions. While prior work demonstrates that innovation contests can generate solutions of value to the firm, little is known about how problems are formulated for such contests. We investigate problem formulation in a multiple exploratory case study of seven firms and inductively develop a theoretical framework that explains the mechanisms of formulating sharable problems for innovation contests. The chapter contributes to the literatures on crowdsourcing and open innovation by providing a rare account of the intra-organizational implications of engaging in innovation contests and by providing initial clues to problem formulation-a critical antecedent to firms’ ability to leverage external sources of innovation.

  • The impact of biofuel demand on agricultural commodity prices: a systematic review
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Energy and Environment. - : Wiley. - 2041-8396 .- 2041-840X. ; 4:5, s. 410-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By diverting agricultural land away from food, feed, and livestock production, increased production of biofuel feedstock crops tend to drive up prices for agricultural commodities. But by how much? This question has been heavily debated in recent years, following the food price crisis of 2007–2008. A systematic review of 121 studies that quantifies the impact of biofuel demand on agricultural commodity markets reveals that there is still considerable uncertainty around the exact magnitude of the price response. Increased demand for corn ethanol in the United States—the focus of the majority of studies—is estimated to have accounted for 14–43% of the rise in US corn prices in the period 2000–2008. The divergence in results between studies is mainly due to different assumptions regarding demand and supply elasticities for agricultural commodities, and there is very limited empirical evidence that can help reduce the uncertainty around the value of these parameters, especially outside the United States. Few studies analyze the impact of biofuel demand beyond current or near‐future levels and it is argued that estimated price effects can neither be extrapolated to large‐scale biofuel demand shocks, nor are most models able to capture accurately the impacts of such shocks due to weaknesses in how land markets and land transformation process are modeled. To better gauge current and future impacts of biofuel demand on agricultural commodity markets, we need better data on supply and demand responses, both in the short and long run, as well as improved modeling of land competition and land‐use change.
