  • The Gotheborg IV (G4) Model and the Function of Language in the Globalization Process of the Firm: The Case of Swedish MNEs.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: In M. Khan (ed.), Multinational Enterprise Management Strategies in Developing Countries. Hershey, PA: Business Science Reference.. - USA : IGI Global. - 1522502769 ; , s. 215-236
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter contributes to the theory of a firm's globalization processes reflected in the Uppsala Globalization Process Model (UGPM). The Gotheborg IV (G4) model is introduced, mapping the knowledge zones of the UGPM in a four quadrant axis model. Using language in its meta-capacity as theory and framework of analysis the G4 model makes a distinction between the words ‘enterprise' (Hn) and ‘subsidiary' (H1), addressing the core features of firm globalization with geographically dispersed foreign subsidiaries and globally coordinated activities of manufacturing, sourcing and R&D capabilities. With the distinction between Hn and H1, the G4 model is able to present eight perspectives of the globalization process from interior and exterior to the enterprise and subsidiary. As method, this chapter will show how using the G4 model results in a richer analysis and findings from qualitative data. In this study Swedish top-level managers working in Asia show how they foster an organization culture of continuous learning and change that supports the MNE's globalization efforts.

  • Spectacular language and creative marketing in a Singapore tailor shop
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Multilingualism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1479-0718 .- 1747-7530. ; 16:1, s. 79-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A tailor shop located in Singapore’s Chinatown is explored as a case of creative linguistic marketing practice, examining how such practice can be understood in relation to the interaction of local and global forces on the linguistic landscape. The shop uses a range of Scandinavian semiotic resources (language and artefacts) which for us, coming upon the shop, seemed unexpected or, using Sweetland’s term, spectacular. Following in the spirit of linguistic landscape analysis, we investigate one particular dimension of the visual semiosis of this shop, namely the signage. Drawing upon photographic and interview data, we trace the history of this semiosis, charting how its purpose and meaning has changed over time. What emerges from our study is that what seems idiosyncratic to researchers can have rich local meaning in context. What appears to be an outlier on the linguistic landscape can offer insight into situated experiences. In this light, our study of a shop and its semiotic landscape contributes to an understanding of the changing sociolinguistic patterns and creativity that occur in spaces like Singapore, and that reflect not just contemporary but also previous eras of globalisation and contact across historical, political and cultural borders.

  • A Transculturalist Path to Democratic Global Cooperation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cultural Research. - 2079-1100. ; 14:1, s. 82-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The problem of attaining global cooperation amidst cultural diversity is frequently and often urgently affirmed. However, the main existing prescriptions for handling cultural diversity in global politics — namely, liberal cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism and interculturalism — each have major deficiencies. An alternative politics of cultural diversity — here termed transculturalism — takes a different approach by engaging the divergence of life-worlds not as a problem for global cooperation, but as a positive opportunity for forging creative collaboration. Core principles of the proposed transculturalist framework include intense reflexivity, explicit attention to culture/power links, recognition of cultural complexity, embrace of cultural diversity, cultivation of humility, deep listening, and reciprocal learning for positive change. Transculturalism offers significant promise for furthering constructive global cooperation, although the approach is by itself no panacea, and its implementation faces major challenges.

  • Africa and International Relations in the 21st Century
  • 2012
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the start of the second decade of the 21st Century, Africa is viewed in a much more positive light by analysts, investors, observers and policymakers. China’s recent closer involvement with the continent has set the tone for new forms of engagement between Africa and the rest of the world. The authors discuss the implications for Africa’s future trajectories and how to understand the continent’s position in the international system. Furthermore, they demonstrate how the study of shifts in Africa’s international relations can help explain broader dynamics and the changing foundations of world order.

  • Globalization and the Knowledge-Driven Economy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Economic Development Quarterly. - : SAGE Publications. - 0891-2424 .- 1552-3543. ; 30:1, s. 3-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study implements the Schumpeterian notion of creative reaction to articulate and test the hypothesis that the shift to the knowledge economy in advanced economies is the result of the creative reaction of firms, caught in out-of-equilibrium conditions by the fast globalization of product and factor markets since the last decade of the 20th century. Advanced countries specialized in the generation and exploitation of knowledge because of its relative abundance stemming from their sophisticated knowledge governance mechanisms and the large stock of knowledge. In turn, this had strong positive effects on total factor productivity. The empirical analysis confirms that in advanced economies the specialization in knowledge-based activities substituted for the previous specialization in mass manufacturing activities supporting the increase of total factor productivity. The new specialization in knowledge-intensive activities has been stronger in cases where patent activities have been more intense and the exposure to international trade and the revenue per capita have been larger.

  • Globalization and the rise of integrated world society : deterritorialization, structural power, and the endogenization of international society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Theory. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1752-9719 .- 1752-9727. ; 11:3, s. 293-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a widespread feeling that globalization represents a major system change that has or should have brought world society to the forefront of international relations theory. Nonetheless, world society remains an amorphous and undertheorized concept, and its potential role in shaping the structure of the international society of states has scarcely been raised. We build on Buzan's (2018, 2) master concept of ‘integrated’ world society (‘a label to describe the merger of world and interstate society’) to locate the integration of world society in the globalization of social networks. Following the advice of Buzan (2001) and Williams (2014), we use conceptual frameworks from international political economy to systematically explore the structure of integrated world society along six dimensions derived from Mann (1986) and Strange (1988): military/security, political, economic/production, credit, knowledge, and ideological. Our empirical survey suggests that, on each of these dimensions, power has centralized as it has globalized, generating steep global hierarchies in world society that are similar to those that characterize national societies. The centrality of the United States in the networks of world society makes it in effect the ‘central state’ of a new kind of international society that is endogenized within integrated world society.

  • Globalization and populism in Europe
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Public Choice. - : Springer. - 0048-5829 .- 1573-7101. ; 189:1-2, s. 51-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent micro-level studies have suggested that globalization-in particular, economic globalization and trade with China-breeds political polarization and populism. This study examines whether or not those results generalize by examining the country-level association between vote shares for European populist parties and economic globalization. Using data on vote shares for 267 right-wing and left-wing populist parties in 33 European countries during 1980-2017, and globalization data from the KOF institute, we find no evidence of a positive association between (economic or other types of) globalization and populism. EU membership is associated with a 4-6-percentage-point larger vote share for right-wing populist parties.
