  • Techniques for Efficient Implementation of FIR and Particle Filtering

    • FIR filters occupy a central place many signal processing applications which either alter the shape, frequency or the sampling frequency of the signal. FIR filters are used because of their stability and possibility to have linear-phase but require a high filter order to achieve the same magnitude specifications as compared to IIR filters. Depending on the size of the required transition bandwidth the filter order can range from tens to hundreds to even thousands. Since the implementation of the filters in digital domain requires multipliers and adders, high filter orders translate to a large number of these arithmetic units for its implementation. Research towards reducing the complexity of FIR filters has been going on for decades and the techniques used can be roughly divided into two categories; reduction in the number of multipliers and simplification of the multiplier implementation. One technique to reduce the number of multipliers is to use cascaded sub-filters with lower complexity to achieve the desired specification, known as FRM. One of the sub-filters is a upsampled model filter whose band edges are an integer multiple, termed as the period L, of the target filter's band edges. Other sub-filters may include complement and masking filters which filter different parts of the spectrum to achieve the desired response. From an implementation point-of-view, time-multiplexing is beneficial because generally the allowable maximum clock frequency supported by the current state-of-the-art semiconductor technology does not correspond to the application bound sample rate. A combination of these two techniques plays a significant role towards efficient implementation of FIR filters. Part of the work presented in this dissertation is architectures for time-multiplexed FRM filters that benefit from the inherent sparsity of the periodic model filters.These time-multiplexed FRM filters not only reduce the number of multipliers but lowers the memory usage. Although the FRM technique requires a higher number delay elements, it results in fewer memories and more energy efficient memory schemes when time-multiplexed. Different memory arrangements and memory access schemes have also been discussed and compared in terms of their efficiency when using both single and dual-port memories. An efficient pipelining scheme has been proposed which reduces the number of pipelining registers while achieving similar clock frequencies. The single optimal point where the number of multiplications is minimum for non-time-multiplexed FRM filters is shown to become a function of both the period, L and time-multiplexing factor, M. This means that the minimum number of multipliers does not always correspond to the minimum number of multiplications which also increases the flexibility of implementation. These filters are shown to achieve power reduction between 23% and 68% for the considered examples.To simplify the multiplier, alternate number systems like the LNS have been used to implement FIR filters, which reduces the multiplications to additions. FIR filters are realized by directly designing them using ILP in the LNS domain in the minimax sense using finite word length constraints. The branch and bound algorithm, a typical algorithm to implement ILP problems, is implemented based on LNS integers and several branching strategies are proposed and evaluated. The filter coefficients thus obtained are compared with the traditional finite word length coefficients obtained in the linear domain. It is shown that LNS FIR filters provide a better approximation  error compared to a standard FIR filter for a given coefficient word length.FIR filters also offer an opportunity in complexity reduction by implementing the multipliers using Booth or standard high-radix multiplication. Both of these multiplication schemes generate pre-computed multiples of the multiplicand which are then selected based on the encoded bits of the multiplier. In TDF FIR filters, one input data is multiplied with a number of coefficients and complexity can be reduced by sharing the pre-computation of the multiplies of the input data for all multiplications. Part of this work includes a systematic and unified approach to the design of such computation sharing multipliers and a comparison of the two forms of multiplication. It also gives closed form expressions for the cost of different parts of multiplication and gives an overview of various ways to implement the select unit with respect to the design of multiplexers.Particle filters are used to solve problems that require estimation of a system. Improved resampling schemes for reducing the latency of the resampling stage is proposed which uses a pre-fetch technique to reduce the latency between 50% to 95%  dependent on the number of pre-fetches. Generalized division-free architectures and compact memory structures are also proposed that map to different resampling algorithms and also help in reducing the complexity of the multinomial resampling algorithm and reduce the number of memories required by up to 50%.

  • Plasma Characterization & Thin Film Growth and Analysis in Highly Ionized Magnetron Sputtering

    • The present thesis addresses two research areas related to film growth in a highly ionized magnetron sputtering system: plasma characterization, and thin film growth and analysis. The deposition technique used is called high power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HPPMS). Characteristic for this technique are high energy pulses (a few Joules) of length 50-100 µs that are applied to the target (cathode) with a duty time of less than 1 % of the total pulse time. This results in a high electron density in the discharge (>1x1019 m-3) and leads to an increase of the ionization fraction of the sputtered material reaching up to 70 % for Cu.In this work the spatial and temporal evolution of the plasma parameters, including the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), the electron density and the electron temperature are determined using electrostatic Langmuir probes. Electron temperature measurements reveal a low effective temperature of 2-3 eV. The degree of ionization in the HPPMS discharge is explained in light of the self-sputtering yield of the target material. A simple model is therefore provided in order to compare the sputtering yield in HPPMS and that in dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS) for the same average power.Thin Ta films are grown using HPPMS and dcMS and their properties are studied. It is shown that enhanced microstructure and morphology of the deposited films is achieved by HPPMS. The Ta films are also deposited at a number of substrate inclination angles ranging from 0o (i.e., facing the target surface) up to 180 o (i.e., facing away from the target). Deposition rate measurements performed at all inclination angles for both techniques, reveal that growth made using HPPMS resulted in an improved film thickness at higher inclination. Furthermore, the high ionization of the Ta atoms in HPPMS discharge is found to allow for phase tailoring of the deposited films at all inclination angles by applying a bias voltage to the substrate. Finally, highly ionized magnetron sputtering of a compound MAX-phase material (Ti3SiC2) is performed, demonstrating that the HPPMS discharge could also be used to tailor the composition of the growing Ti-Si-C films.

  • All-Fiber System for Photonic States Carrying Orbital Angular Momentum : A Platform for Classical and Quantum Information Processing

    • The protection of confidential data is a fundamental need in the society in which we live. This task becomes more relevant when observing that every day, data traffic increases exponentially, as well as the number of attacks on the telecommunication infra-structure. From the natural sciences, it has been strongly argued that quantum communication has great potential to solve this problem, to such an extent that various governmental and industrial entities believe the protection provided by quantum communications will be an important layer in the field of information security in the next decades. However, integrating quantum technologies both in current optical networks and in industrial systems is not a trivial task, taking into account that a large part of current quantum optical systems are based on bulk optical devices, which could become an important limitation. Throughout this thesis we present an all-in-fiber optical platform that allows a wide range of tasks that aim to take a step forward in terms of generation and detection of photonic states. Among the main features, the generation and detection of photonic quantum states carrying orbital angular momentum stand out.   The platform can also be configured for the generation of random numbers from quantum mechanical measurements, a central aspect in future information tasks.  Our scheme is based on the use of new space-division-multiplexing (SDM) technologies such as few-mode-fibers and photonic lanterns. Furthermore, our platform can also be scaled to high dimensions, it operates in 1550 nm (telecommunications band) and all the components used for its implementation are commercially available. The results presented in this thesis can be a solid alternative to guarantee the compatibility of new SDM technologies in emerging experiments on optical networks and open up new possibilities for quantum communication.

  • Envisioning a Future Decision Support System for Requirements Engineering : A Holistic and Human-centred Perspective

    • Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. The fundamental viewpoint that permeates this thesis is that RE decision-making can be substantially improved by RE decision support systems (REDSS) based on the actual needs of RE decision-makers as well as the actual generic human decision-making activities that take place in the RE decision processes. Thus, a first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand complex decision situations of decision-makers. In order to gain a holistic view of the decision situation from a decision-maker’s perspective, a decision situation framework has been created. The framework evolved through an analysis of decision support systems literature and decision-making theories. The decision situation of RE decision-makers has been studied at a systems engineering company and is depicted in this thesis. These situations are described in terms of, for example, RE decision matters, RE decision-making activities, and RE decision processes. Factors that affect RE decision-makers are also identified. Each factor consists of problems and difficulties. Based on the empirical findings, a number of desirable characteristics of a visionary REDSS are suggested. Examples of characteristics are to reduce the cognitive load, to support creativity and idea generation, and to support decision communication. One or more guiding principles are proposed for each characteristic and available techniques are described. The purpose of the principles and techniques is to direct further efforts concerning how to find a solution that can fulfil the characteristic. Our contributions are intended to serve as a road map that can direct the efforts of researchers addressing RE decision-making and RE decision support problems. Our intention is to widen the scope and provide new lines of thought about how decision-making in RE can be supported and improved.

    • Situationsmedvetenhet (Eng. Situational Awareness), (SA), handlar om att ha koll på läget och vara medveten om vad som händer. Redan då ett komplext system utvecklas får vi en möjlighet att påverka vilken SA en framtida användare av systemet kan komma att få. Det gäller att ta tillvara på detta tillfälle! Ibland uppträder skillnader i SA, beroende på en rad olika orsaker. Denna avhandling handlar om SA och hur man kan använda de skillnaderna vid utveckling av komplexa system. Detta är relevant vid utveckling av en rad olika typer av komplexa system, även om de flesta exempel i denna avhandling kommer från flygdomänen.Avhandlingen innehåller beskrivningar hämtade från litteratur inom området och förslag på utveckling av SA-teori utifrån fokus på just skillnader. Skillnaden mellan vad du behöver vara medveten om och vad du verkligen är medveten om föreslås ge en indikation om individens SA. Vidare föreslås skillnaden mellan vad du är medveten om och vad du tror dig vara medveten om också ge en indikation om individens SA. SA kan skattas för en grupp av människor som arbetar tillsammans, genom variationerna i hur samstämmiga deras uppfattningar är.Termen situationshantering (Eng. Situation Management), (SM), föreslås med en vidare mening än SA, inkluderande SA, men också varje del av perceptionscykeln, hantering av mentala resurser och hantering av situationen genom extern påverkan. SM är en väl lämpad term vid utveckling av komplexa system då fokus här är på situationen och hur den kan hanteras, snarare än fokus på vad en individ eller en grupp uppfattar.Att skatta skillnader i SA och att kunna särskilja olika typer av skillnader är viktiga förutsättningar för att kunna hantera skillnader i SA vid utveckling av komplexa system på ett bra sätt. I avhandlingen gås flera sätt att skatta sådana skillnader igenom och speciellt tas för- och nackdelar med ögonrörelsemätning upp. Med referens till litteraturen och till de bilagda artiklarna beskrivs skillnader i SA beroende på a) designalternativ, b) roller i processen från utveckling till användning c) kontext och d) analysnivå. Skillnaderna i SA föreslås ses som både kvantitativa (dvs. hög eller låg SA) och kvalitativa (tex. olika aspekter av en situation).Ansatser såsom SM, realtidsvärdering, mätning och analys av SA på flera nivåer samtidigt samt simulatorbaserad design föreslås för att hantera skillnader i SA vid utveckling av komplexa system.

  • VLSI Architectures and Arithmetic Operations with Application to the Fermat Number Transform

    • The properties of arithmetic operations in Fermat integer quotient rings 2m+1, where m = 2t, are investigated. The arithmetic operations considered are mainly those involved in the computation of the Fermat number transform. We consider some ways of representing the binary coded integers in such rings and investigate VLSI architectures for arithmetic operations, with respect to the different element representations. The VLSI architectures are mutually compared with respect to area (A) and time (T) complexity and area-time performance (AT2). The VLSI model chosen is a linears witch-level RC model.In the polar representation, the nonzero elements of a field are represented by the powers of a primitive element of the field. In the thesis we particularly investigate the properties of arithmetic operations and their corresponding VLSI architectureswith respect to the polar representation of the elements of Fermat prime fields. Somenew results regarding the applicability of the Fermat number transform when usingthe polar representation are also presented.

  • Fabrication and characterization of ZnO nanostructures for sensing and photonic device applications

    • Nanotechnology is an emerging inter-disciplinary paradigm which encompasses diverse fields of science and engineering converge at the nanoscale. This nanoscale science and nanostructure engineering have well demonstrated in the fabrication of sensors/transducers devices with faster response time and better sensitivity then the planer version of the sensor’s configurations. Nanotechnology is not just to grow/fabricate nanostructures by just mixing nanoscale materials together but it requires the ability to understand and to precisely manipulate and control of the developed nanomaterials in a useful way. Nanotechnology is aiding to substantially improve, even revolutionize, many technology and industry sectors like information technology, energy, environmental science, medicine/medical instrumentation, homeland security, food safety, and transportation, among many others. Such applications of nanotechnology are delivering in both expected and unexpected ways on nanotechnology’s promise to benefit the society.The semiconductor ZnO with wide band gap (~ 3.37 eV) is a distinguish and unique material and its nanostructures have attracted great attention among the researchers due to its peculiar properties such as large exciton binding energy (60 meV) at room temperature, the high electron mobility, high thermal conductivity, good transparency and easiness of fabricating it in the different type of nanostructures. Based on all these fascinating properties, ZnO have been chosen as a suitable material for the fabrication of photonic, transducers/sensors, piezoelectric, transparent and spin electronics devices etc. The objective of the current study is to highlight the recent developments in materials and techniques for electrochemical sensing and hetrostructure light emitting diodes (LEDs) luminescence properties based on the different ZnO nanostructures. The sensor devices fabricated and characterized in the work were applied to determine and monitor the real changes of the chemical or biochemical species. We have successfully demonstrated the application of our fabricated devices as primary transducers/sensors for the determination of extracellular glucose and the glucose inside the human fat cells and frog cells using the potentiometric technique. Moreover, the fabricated ZnO based nanosensors have also been applied for the selective determination of uric acid, urea and metal ions successfully. This thesis relates specifically to zinc oxide nanostructure based electrochemical sensors and photonic device (LED) applications.

  • Configurational and Magnetic Interactions in Multicomponent Systems

    • This thesis is a theoretical study of configurational and magnetic interactions in multicomponent solids. These interactions are the projections onto the configurational and magnetic degrees of freedom of the underlying electronic quantum mechanical system, and can be used to model, explain and predict the properties of materials. For example, the interactions govern temperature induced configurational and magnetic order-disorder transitions in Heusler alloys and ternary nitrides.In particular three perspectives are studied. The first is how the interactions can be derived from first-principles calculations at relevant physical conditions. The second is their consequences, like the critical temperatures for disordering, obtained with e.g. Monte Carlo simulations. The third is their origin in terms of the underlying electronic structure of the materials.Intrinsic defects in the half-Heusler system NiMnSb are studied and it is found that low-energy defects do not destroy the important half-metallic property at low concentrations. Deliberate doping of NiMnSb with 3d-metals is considered and it is found that replacing some Ni with extra Mn or Cr creates new strong magnetic interactions which could be beneficial for applications at elevated temperature. A self-consistent scheme to include the effects of thermal expansion and one-electron excitations in the calculation of the magnetic critical temperature is introduced and applied to a study of Ni1−xCuxMnSb.A supercell implementation of the disordered local moments approach is suggested and benchmarked for the treatment of paramagnetic CrN as a disordered magnetic phase. It is found that the orthorhombic-to-cubic phase transition in this nitride can be understood as a first-order magnetic order-disorder transition. The ferromagnetism in Ti1−xCrxN solid solutions, an unusual property in nitrides, is explained in terms of a charge transfer induced change in the Cr-Cr magnetic interactions.Cubic Ti1−xAlxN solid solutions displays a complex and concentration dependent phase separation tendency. A unified cluster expansion method is presented that can be used to simulate the configurational thermodynamics of this system. It is shown that short range clustering do influence the free energy of mixing but only slightly change the isostructural phase diagram as compared to mean-field estimates.

  • Simulator-Based Design : Methodology and vehicle display application

    • Human-in-the-loop simulators have long been used in the research community as well as in industry. The aviation field has been the pioneers in the use of simulators for design purposes. In contrast, corresponding activities in the automotive area have been less widespread. Published reports on experimental activities based on human-in-the-loop simulations have focused on methods used in the study, but nobody seems to have taken a step back and looked at the wider methodological picture of Simulator-Based Design. The purpose of this thesis is to fill this gap by drawing, in part, upon the author’s long experience in this field.In aircraft and lately also in ground vehicles there has been a technology shift from pure mechanics to computer-based systems. The physical interface has turned into screen-based solutions. This trend towards glass has just begun for ground vehicles. This development in vehicle technology has opened the door for new design approaches, not only for design itself, but also for the development process. Simulator-Based Design (SBD) is very compatible with this trend. The first part of this thesis proposes a structure for the process of SBD and links it to the corresponding methodology for software design.In the second part of the thesis the focus changes from methodology to application and specifically to the design of three-dimensional situation displays. Such displays are supposed to support the human operator with a view of a situation beyond the more or less limited visual range. In the aircraft application interest focuses on the surrounding air traffic in the light of the evolving free-flight concept, where responsibility for separation between aircraft will be (partly) transferred from ground-based flight controllers to air crews. This new responsibility must be supported by new technology and the situational view must be displayed from the perspective of the aircraft. Some basic design questions for such 3D displays were investigated resulting in an adaptive interface approach, where the current situation and task govern the details of information presentation.The thesis also discusses work on situation displays for ground vehicles. The most prominent example may be the Night Vision system, where the road situation ahead is depicted on a screen in the cab. The existing systems are based on continuous presentation, an approach that we have questioned, since there is strong evidence for negative behavioral adaptation. This means, for example, that the driver will drive faster, since vision has been enhanced, and thereby consume the safety margins that the system was supposed to deliver. Our investigation supports a situation-dependant approach and no continuous presentation.In conclusion, the results from our simulator-based studies showed advantages for adaptive interface solutions. Such design concepts are much more complicated than traditional static interfaces. This finding emphasizes the need for more dynamic design resources in order to have a complete understanding of the situation-related interface changes. The use of human-in-the-loop simulators and deployment of Simulator-Based Design will satisfy this need.

  • Severity of illness versus severity of disease : definitions and applications

    • Outcome assessment should consist of two basic steps - "selection of a meaningful outcome" and "determination of what caused the outcome". The latter step requires comparisons, and therefore information about the initial status of the patients. Severity ratings attempt to group patients with similar initial status so that outcome comparisons are meaningful. They are consequently an essential ingredient in outcome assessment.This thesis aims at expanding the knowledge about outcome measurement focusing on the severity of a case with regard to definitions and applications of severity measures. Further, theoretical knowledge is integrated with practical needs for outcome assessment and methodology is developed for modelling the use of resources and interpreting the association between different severity measures.As with illness and disease, severity of illness and severity of disease are interchangeable terms in medical literature. Based on a holistic theory of health, these terms were differentiated. Severity of a case was described by two basic components - severity of disease and severity of illness. Essentially, severity of illness concerns suffering and disability, and severity of disease concerns risk of death, risk of suffering and risk of disability. These definitions were the core of a set of criteria for classifying severity measures or outcome measures.The role of a disease severity score in explaining resources use (e.g., intensity of technology utilization and length of hospital stay) in a neonatal intensive care unit was investigated. A disease severity score based on the death risk of the initial diagnosis was found to be an indicator of intensity of therapeutic technology together with gestational age and Apgar score. However, it does not show statistical significance to explain length of stay, which was explained by intensity of diagnostic technology and birthweight.The demand for patient classification systems (standard systems to describe a patient's condition) on a national and local level was investigated. There is little experience in the use of these systems, but at the same time there is a demand from the nurse managers for standard measures of a patient's need for care.There is still little knowledge about the association between severity of illness and severity of disease. This association was studied for patients with ulcerative colitis using data analysis techniques for dimension reduction such as cluster analysis, homogeneity analysis and non linear principal components analysis. A non linear relationship between illness and disease severity measures was found. The overall clinical judgement of disease activity was more related to illness patterns than symptoms or endoscopy and laboratory findings. In addition, the two measures of illness severity (Sickness Impact Profile and Rating Form for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patient Concerns) were found to represent complementary information about a patient's illness experience. This illustrates the importance of conceptual knowledge in the selection process of an illness measure for outcome evaluations. These findings also reinforce the need for the development of systems to support interpretation of these kinds of complex associations, as traditional statistics have been shown to be of limited value under these circumstances.
