  • Internationalisering av svenska försäkringsbolag : Drivkrafter, organisering och utveckling 1855-1913
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the driving forces behind the organising and development of Swedish insurance firms business abroad. It contains an investigation of all insurance branches with interests in the international insurance market (except marine insurance companies). The historical process of internationalisation was initiated at the same time as the foundation of the first joint stock insurance firm, Skandia, in 1855. The internationalisation began with reinsurance contracts with major European insurance companies with business in Sweden. To compensate for reduced premium income, through reinsurance, the contracts had a tendency to become mutual, which meant that the Swedish firms in a early phase of their development exposed themselves to foreign insurance risks. The insurance firms also started general agencies abroad, initially in the Nordic Countries, but over time they conducted business further away from the domestic market. The main incentive for internationalisation, both through reinsurance and direct insurance abroad, was that it was a way for the insurance firms to diversify their portfolios, develop a sound risk management, secure long-term survival and also diversify their income through time and space. The internationalisation process was, however, different in different branches; fire insurance firms deepened their commitments abroad, while firms in thebranches of life, accident and minor insurance had to abandon this strategy and instead concentrated their business to Sweden. The financial capacity of the firms engaged abroad became more important over time. The larger firms also needed a broader context for their portfolios to avoid a too high rate of risk exposure. Hence, larger fire insurance firms maintained and also extended their international business, while smaller firms were forced to adopt and/or preferred a domestic profile for their business. Furthermore, differences ininstitutional constraints, path-dependence and organisational structures were contributing factors behind the internationalisation of the Swedish insurance firms.

  • Den egna vägen - Sverige och den europeiska integrationen 1961-1971
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of this thesis is to study the reasons behind the Swedish decision not to become a full member of the EEC in the 1960's and 1970's. During this period, Sweden adapted a so called contra-cyclical economic policy characterised by capital and exchange regulations and discriminating establishment rules against foreign citizens. These rules were however incompatible with a membership in the EEC. At the same time, trade with the EEC-countries was of great importance. Therefore an agreement that safeguarded an independent economic policy at the same time as it ensured Swedish trade was considered as urgent and a number of exceptions from the Treaty of Rome were demanded in this respect. Sweden, however, referred these exceptions to areas connected with neutrality and security policy in the belief that this would win sympathy from the Swedish opposition parties as well as from the EEC. This strategy, however, failed with respect to the EEC-countries and a widely spread opinion among these countries was that Sweden only used the neutral-policy-argument as an excuse for safeguarding Swedish domestic policy interests. This led to a massive critique against Sweden. In order not to be blamed for reducing the importance of the policy of neutrality the opposition parties, however, did not question the Swedish arguments which led to a long period of silence in the Swedish EEC-debate. This explanation for the Swedish actions towards the EEC has not been given enough attention by prior researchers. The functionalistic view on the European integration in which integration in one area more or less automatically leads to an extended integration in others is also questioned. This thesis in contrast supports the intergovernmentalistic view on European integration and suggests that economic integration in one area in some cases, for political reasons, encourages self determination in others.

  • Från arbetare till arbetarklass : Klassformering och klassrelationer i Fagersta - ett mellansvenskt brukssamhälle ca 1870-1909
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation addresses the problem of the formation of an industrial working class. This is a concrete historical process in which the workers themselves are the main subjects. In the iron-works community of Fagersta the early popular movements (rather than unions) played a more direct and important role in the class-formation than normaly appreciated, especially the Temperance lodges and the Franchise movement. Due to the highly polarised society, these organisations were dominated by proletarian groups and totaly lacked members even slightly associated with the ruling elite. The class formation was further facilitated by common interests the members shared as being in one way or another dominated by Fagersta bruk; by the extremely rapid growth and transformation of both society and production, causing a need for a new social and moral context, and by the conspicuous economical and political power of the Fagersta bruk. The social unrest and its negative effects on working-discipline, combined with the growing economic values at stake and the fear of socialism, caused the iron works employers to form one of the first employers organisations in Sweden and, as shown in Fagersta, to develop a new managerial policy, industrial paternalism. To a great deal this policy was constructed upon the real or alleged paternal relations of the past. The purpose was to neutralise the negative consequences of the disintegration of the old society, including the former social and economic relationships between workers and employers. Also, the different phases of working class culture played a formative role in shaping the new class-relations and the industrial working-class itself.

  • Family Matters : Essays on Families, Firms and Funding in the Philippines 1850–2014
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Family Matters – Essays of Families, Firms and Funding in the Philippines 1850–2014 is a study of family business groups in the Philippines. It consists of an introductory essay and four separate papers. The introductory essay frames the thesis in the vast literature on family firms and family business groups in emerging economies, discusses sources and methodology, and provides an overview of Philippine economic history to give the overarching economic context to the separate papers. The first paper deals with the role of institutions in understanding the dominance and prevalence of family business groups in the Philippines. The literature posits that weak institutions can help explain the predominance of family business groups in emerging economies. This paper takes a historical perspective to examine whether that explanation holds over time, examining the development of core property rights and core economic institutions over time and how family firms have responded. The second paper studies funding options in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and whether the rapidly growing financial system was driven from above or below. The paper examines the impact it had on the explicit goal of stimulating investment and growth in the early twentieth century and what that meant for family firms. The third paper studies capital market developments since the Asian crisis and in particular the growth of the corporate bond market in the Philippines; how this development and how it affected family business groups. The fourth paper deals with governance and management capabilities and examines professionalization of family firms over time to seek to answer the question of longevity. Management literature provides studies and models for family firms but these are fairly recent whereas the family firms that have been in business for several generations have found ways to manage for the long term. The paper analyses what three select groups have done in terms of professionalization and management.

  • Professionella patriarker : Svenska storföretagsledares ideal, praktik och professionaliseringsprocess 1910-1945
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Much is assumed about the professionalisation of managers, but the subject has been little studied within the social sciences. Did it take place and if so, how did it happen? Previous studies suggest that the managers in Swedish industries were professionalised after the Second World War, without, however, thoroughly investigating this claim. To be able to study the professionalisation process of managers, this thesis argues that it is necessary to look at both the ideals and the practice of management. This thesis constructs two different management ideals: the patriarchal ideal and the professional ideal, which are then joined together in a model. The model is then used to interpret the management behaviour of Swedish managers in 1910-1945.The results of this thesis show that the professionalisation process of managers was not a strict process forward. The ideals were relatively easy to change from a patriarchal ideal to a professional ideal. But the practice of management could be patriarchal as well as professional, depending on the situation and the context. One explanation for this is that the managers could not always live up to the professional ideal. Instead they reverted to the system of personal trust and its loyalties in line with the patriarchal ideal. Therefore the professionalisation process of managers was not as successful as it might have been.

  • Arbetarna och tekniken : Svensk fackföreningsrörelse, rationalisering och arbetsmarknadspolitik 1920–1950
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the dynamics between trade unions, technological change, and labour market policies in Sweden, focusing specifically on the Metal Workers’ Union (Metall) from 1920 to 1950. By exploring archival materials, the study reveals how workers actively responded to and influenced technological changes and industrial rationalization, thereby shaping Sweden’s labour market policies.A significant portion of the dissertation examines the internal deliberations within Metall, highlighting the divergent viewpoints between the union leadership and rank-and-file members. These discussions, revolving around strategies to navigate employer-initiated rationalization efforts, reflected a spectrum of views. While the leadership often advocated for rationalization to foster class cooperation, the rank-and-file typically maintained a critical stance. The tensions over rationalization peaked during the major metalworkers’ strike of 1945, leading to agreements establishing a regulatory framework across Swedish industries. The findings underscore that workers were not passive recipients of technological change but were instrumental in negotiating the terms of rationalization, influencing the evolution of the Swedish labour market. For instance, the dissertation highlights the establishment of central institutions in the 1940s that reinforced class cooperation in matters relating to rationalization. In conclusion, this dissertation posits that the strategical response of the trade union movement to rationalization was crucial in shaping the Swedish labour market model in the 20th century.
