- The primary aim of this study is to provide a deeper and more complete understanding of why the great municipal amalgamation (storkommunreformen) during the 1940s became the political solution to the problem that the Government believed many of Sweden’s municipalities had in satisfactorily providing for a local welfare society. The study also describes the results of this large-scale reorganization process. The events examined include the political decision-making process at the national level that took place during 1939-1949, as well as the regional/local realization of these decisions during 1946-1952. The parliamentary treatment of the municipal division issue should be viewed as a good example of what researchers have termed a Swedish decision-making model. One clear manifestation of this was the fact that the national commission that investigated the question primarily formulated the principles for the reform. The committee’s proposal received strong endorsements in the reports from the reviewers of the proposal. The government authorities and many of the municipalities felt that a new division of municipalities was justified. Opposition that did occur came mostly from rural municipalities with small populations. Many of these municipalities believed that the present municipal divisions functioned well as they were. Of those municipalities that were affected by amalgamation, 39 percent of them did not agree with the decision. The majority of these could agree to merge with other municipalities, but not with the municipalities stipulated by the authorities. Considering the fact that the then current divisions were based on a long tradition, demands for retaining independence could have been greater. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that 66 percent of all larger municipalities were formed using some level of force. This still indicated a relatively widely distributed opposition to the amalgamation decisions, however.

När realismen blir orealistisk : Litteraturens "sanna historier" och unga läsares tolkningsstrategier

- This thesis discusses challenges to teaching and learning literature arising from young upper secondary school students’ interest in and reading of contemporary literature with truth claims. The main starting-point is that something central happens to text interpretation since visual media are taking control of the understanding of the realism concept. By an overarching interpretation theory framework combined with an intermedial perspective production and reception aspects on the relation between literature/documents and authors/journalists in the current reality trend are linked in a comparative media-historical context to 19th-century realism and naturalism. My empirics are founded on material gathered in a high school class in the Social Science programme. The results of the material described in my licentiate thesis, combined with the classroom observations and group interviews on which this doctoral thesis is based, reveal a high complexity in young people’s understanding of the realism concept. In the study of the Realism period the text chosen for joint reading, Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1867), appears “unrealistic” to many young people. With the ambition to explain and deepen the understanding that young people’s reading of school classics does not lead to an experience of realism an analysis is made of Zola’s novel, showing that the thematic contact surfaces, which might awaken an interest, are counteracted by the author’s narrative strategies. The novel’s determinism and detailed richness create unease among the young, whose media experience is inculcated by emancipatory possibilities and quick visual cuts. The second part of the thesis discusses contemporary literature with claims on realism. Group interviews with young people fascinated by factual literature show that the truth pacts created in the encounter with these texts are often left unprocessed and unreflected on. Furthermore, the young readers’ statements support the hypothesis that the text “meaning” and status as a truth-carrier are today more and more controlled by the aggressive marketing of new literature. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the contemporary literature mentioned by the young as good examples of “true stories”. The aim is to study how the truth pacts are manifested in paratexts and texts. A comparison between original and paperback editions shows that the truth claims are always reinforced in the latter. The study results show that the traditional division of literature into fact and fiction is dissolving. The implications for teaching and learning literature that this study suggests are that the “true stories” of contempo-rary literature have an essential function to fulfil as long as the reception does not take place privately, which often leads to reproducing prejudices. Faction literature also proves a good potential for media-critical analysis within the subject of Swedish.

- Varje språk återspeglar i sitt lexikon den kultur för vilken den tjänar som uttrycksmedel. Redan av detta enkla faktum följer att språk och kultur är oupplösligt förenade begrepp och att överföring av text från ett språk till ett annat − dvs. översättning – i hög grad också innebär kulturöverföring, och därmed kulturkontakt. Det är följaktligen av central betydelse för översättningsvetenskapen att intressera sig för översättningen som kulturfenomen. Denna bok innehåller de skriftliga versionerna av föredragen från ett svensk-franskt symposium med temat "Översättning och Kultur" som anordnades vid Växjö universitet den 17 och 18 november 2006. De tolv texterna behandlar de kulturella aspekterna av översättning mellan franska och andra språk, framför allt svenska, men också danska, engelska, finska och nederländska. Flertalet artiklar är inriktade på analys av översättningen som textprodukt eller textprocess, men boken innehåller också bidrag som belyser översättningen utifrån, som en sociokulturell verksamhet av stor vikt för varje samhälles kulturliv.
