  • Promoting positive development among refugee adolescents
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of research on adolescence. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795. ; 33:4, s. 1064-1084
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Of the estimated 35.3 million refugees around the world (UNHCR, Figures at a Glance, 2022), approximately 50% are children under the age of 18. Refugee adolescents represent a unique group as they navigate developmental tasks in an unstable and often threatening environment or in resettlement contexts in which they often face marginalization. In addition to physiological, social, and psychological changes that mark adolescence, refugee youth often face traumatic experiences, acculturative stress, discrimination, and a lack of basic resources. In this consensus statement, we examine research on refugee adolescents' developmental tasks, acculturative tasks, and psychological adjustment using Suarez-Orozco and colleague's integrative risk and resilience model for immigrant-origin children and youth proposed by Suarez-Orozco et al. Finally, we discuss recommendations-moving from proximal to more distal contexts.

  • Molecular pathology of the non-luminal Ba/Sq-like and Sc/NE-like classes of urothelial tumours : An integrated immunohistochemical analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Human Pathology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0046-8177. ; 122, s. 11-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several groups have during past years produced molecular classification schemes for bladder cancer. Even though no consensus on how to define a subtype exists, one approach has been to base definitions on how tumours cluster according to their mRNA expression profiles. In many cases, obtained profiles, and thus class defining features, are affected by signals from non-tumour cells within the biopsy. To overcome this issue, we combined gene expression analyses with analyses of the actual tumour cells by extensive immunohistochemistry (IHC). By this approach we were able to define tumour cell phenotypes i.e., subtypes defined by features of the tumour cells only, and adjust mRNA-based algorithms accordingly. In the present investigation we address the non-luminal Basal/Squamous-like (Ba/Sq) and Small cell/Neuroendocrine-like (Sc/NE) categories of tumours defined by mRNA-based classification. We make use of IHC data for 15 proteins, all known to be instrumental for defining molecular subtypes of urothelial carcinoma. We show that the UroB type of tumours, frequently grouped together with Ba/Sq, are different from the Ba/Sq entity at several essential features and is a derivative of Urothelial-like tumours (Uro). We show that the Sc/NE tumours are similar to but represents extreme versions of Genomically Unstable (GU) tumours. We apply clustering to 423 cases representing all subtypes using IHC data for 14 proteins and show that the obtained grouping conforms well with the mRNA-based classification. This work describes in detail the molecular pathology of non-luminal RNA-based bladder cancer subtypes and highlight similarities/dissimilarities suggestive of origin.

  • Punks, Goths, and Other Eye-Catching Peer Crowds : Do They Fulfill a Function for Shy Youths?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of research on adolescence. - Hillsdale, N.J. : Blackwell Publishing. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795. ; 19:1, s. 113-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adolescent peer crowds such as Punks and Goths are mainly identified by their strikingly unusual or even shocking appearances. Although many studies find these crowds, few have tried to explain why some youths take on these startling or shocking appearances. We hypothesized that an off-putting appearance is a way to cope with behavioral inhibition by limiting social contacts. Using data from 1,200 7th - 11th graders, we compared peer crowds characterized by their startling appearance (“Radical” crowds) with three theoretically relevant comparison groups. Results showed that youths affiliating with Radical crowds were more inhibited than other youths, including those in crowds previously shown to be shy or socially anxious. Inhibited Radicals, however, had poorer emotional adjustment than inhibited youths in other crowds. If Radical styles are a way for inhibited youths to cope by limiting social contacts, the strategy does not seem to be beneficial for emotional adjustment.

  • Nonsuicidal self-injury in a community sample of adolescents: Subgroups, stability, and associations with psychological difficulties
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research on Adolescence. - : Wiley. - 1532-7795 .- 1050-8392. ; 22:4, s. 678-693
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patterns of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and their association with other psychological difficulties were studied in a community sample of young Swedish adolescents, by a 2-wave longitudinal design with a 1-year interval. Hierarchical cluster analysis at T1 identified eight NSSI subgroups in each gender, of which five were clearly replicated at T2. Among these were a subgroup with generalized high-frequent NSSI, which was associated with both internalizing and externalizing problems, and a subgroup of girls who engaged primarily in cutting and showed mainly internalizing problems. Generally, NSSI clusters among girls were more stable over time and associated with more psychological problems. The results indicate that different patterns of NSSI have different developmental and clinical implications.

  • Peer networks and the development of illegal political behavior among adolescents
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of research on adolescence. - Hoboken : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1050-8392 .- 1532-7795. ; 24:2, s. 399-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined to what extent peer influence explains the development of illegal political behavior controlling for peer selection, legal political peer influence, and gender effects. Late adolescents who filled out questionnaires at two annual measurements were used in a longitudinal social network approach (N = 1006; Mage = 16.62). Results showed that peers’ involvement in illegal political behavior predicted adolescents’ increases in illegal political behavior. Adolescents did not select other peers with similar illegal political behavior. Nevertheless, adolescents selected peers with similar legal political behavior. Findings were discussed in light of a stage process where adolescents initially chose peers with similar legal political behavior. Subsequently, peers influence adolescents on both legal and illegal political behavior.
