  • New electromagnetic conservation laws
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Classical and Quantum Gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 20:13, s. 2663-2668
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Chevreton superenergy tensor was introduced in 1964 as a counterpart, for electromagnetic fields, of the well-known Bel–Robinson tensor of the gravitational field. We here prove the unnoticed facts that, in the absence of electromagnetic currents, Chevreton's tensor (i) is completely symmetric, and (ii) has a trace-free divergence if the Einstein–Maxwell equations hold. It follows that the trace of the Chevreton tensor is a rank-2, symmetric, trace-free, conserved tensor, which is different from the energy–momentum tensor, and nonetheless can be constructed for any test Maxwell field or any Einstein–Maxwell spacetime.

  • The Chevreton tensor and Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes conformal to Einstein spaces
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Classical and Quantum Gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 24:13, s. 3437-3455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we characterize the source-free Einstein–Maxwell spacetimes which have a trace-free Chevreton tensor. We show that this is equivalent to the Chevreton tensor being of pure radiation type and that it restricts the spacetimes to Petrov type N or O. We prove that the trace of the Chevreton tensor is related to the Bach tensor and use this to find all Einstein–Maxwell spacetimes with a zero cosmological constant that have a vanishing Bach tensor. Among these spacetimes we then look for those which are conformal to Einstein spaces. We find that the electromagnetic field and the Weyl tensor must be aligned, and in the case that the electromagnetic field is null, the spacetime must be conformally Ricci-flat and all such solutions are known. In the non-null case, since the general solution is not known on a closed form, we settle by giving the integrability conditions in the general case, but we do give new explicit examples of Einstein–Maxwell spacetimes that are conformal to Einstein spaces, and we also find examples where the vanishing of the Bach tensor does not imply that the spacetime is conformal to a C-space. The non-aligned Einstein–Maxwell spacetimes with vanishing Bach tensor are conformally C-spaces, but none of them are conformal to Einstein spaces.

  • Unique characterization of the Bel-Robinson tensor
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 21:14, s. 3499-3503
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove that a completely symmetric and trace-free rank-4 tensor is, up to sign, a Bel-Robinson-type tensor, i.e., the superenergy tensor of a tensor with the same algebraic symmetries as the Weyl tensor, if and only if it satisfies a certain quadratic identity. This may be seen as the first Rainich theory result for rank-4 tensors.

  • Investigations of solutions of Einstein's field equations close to lambda-Taub-NUT
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 25:23, s. 235005-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present investigations of a class of solutions of Einstein's field equations close to the family of lambda-Taub-NUT spacetimes. The studies are done using a numerical code introduced by the author elsewhere. One of the main technical complications is due to the S-3-topology of the Cauchy surfaces. Complementing these numerical results with heuristic arguments, we are able to yield some first insights into the strong cosmic censorship issue and the conjectures by Belinskii, Khalatnikov and Lifschitz in this class of spacetimes. In particular, the current investigations suggest that strong cosmic censorship holds in this class. We further identify open issues in our current approach and point to future research projects.

  • Effects of friction forces on the motion of objects in smoothly matched interior/exterior spacetimes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 30:2, s. 025009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the non-geodesic motion of a test particle inside a fluid in equilibrium, as described by the interior Schwarzschild solution, in the presence of a Poynting-Robertson-like dissipative force. The accelerated motion in the interior spacetime is (regularly) connected to the geodesic one in the corresponding external Schwarzschild background, mimicking physical conditions often occurring in spacetime regions close to stellar or compact objects. A similar analysis is repeated for the case in which the interior Schwarzschild solution is given by a Pant-Sah perfect-fluid solution. This latter case, supporting a polytropic equation of state for the interior fluid source, appears to be more appropriate for modeling situations of either stellar or cosmological interest.

  • Laboratory soft x-ray emission due to the Hawking-Unruh effect?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 25:14, s. 145005-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of spacetime, quantum field theory, and thermodynamics are all connected through the concepts of the Hawking and Unruh temperatures. The possible detection of the related radiation constitutes a fundamental test of such subtle connections. Here a scheme is presented for the detection of Unruh radiation based on currently available laser systems. By separating the classical radiation from the Unruh response in frequency space, it is found that the detection of Unruh radiation is possible in terms of soft x-ray photons using current laser-electron beam technology. The experimental constraints are discussed and a proposal for an experimental design is given.

  • Is there proof that backreaction of inhomogeneities is irrelevant in cosmology?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 32:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • No. In a number of papers, Green and Wald argue that the standard FLRW model approximates our Universe extremely well on all scales, except close to strong-field astrophysical objects. In particular, they argue that the effect of inhomogeneities on average properties of the Universe (backreaction) is irrelevant. We show that this latter claim is not valid. Specifically, we demonstrate, referring to their recent review paper, that (i) their two-dimensional example used to illustrate the fitting problem differs from the actual problem in important respects, and it assumes what is to be proven; (ii) the proof of the trace-free property of backreaction is unphysical and the theorem about it fails to be a mathematically general statement; (iii) the scheme that underlies the trace-free theorem does not involve averaging and therefore does not capture crucial non-local effects; (iv) their arguments are to a large extent coordinate-dependent, and (v) many of their criticisms of backreaction frameworks do not apply to the published definitions of these frameworks. It is therefore incorrect to infer that Green and Wald have proven a general result that addresses the essential physical questions of backreaction in cosmology.

  • Axisymmetric stationary solutions with arbitrary multipole moments
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Classical and Quantum Gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 24:9, s. 2205-2215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the problem of finding an axisymmetric stationary spacetime from a specified set of multipole moments is studied. The condition on the multipole moments, for the existence of a solution, is formulated as a convergence condition on a power series formed from the multipole moments. The methods in this paper can also be used to give approximate solutions to any order, as well as estimates on each term of the resulting power series.

  • Calculation of, and bounds for, the multipole moments of stationary spacetimes
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Classical and Quantum Gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 23:20, s. 5997-6006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the multipole moments of stationary asymptotically flat spacetimes are considered. We show how the tensorial recursion of Geroch and Hansen can be replaced by a scalar recursion on . We also give a bound on the multipole moments. This gives a proof of the 'necessary part' of a long-standing conjecture due to Geroch.
