  • Bimetric theory and partial masslessness with Lanczos-Lovelock terms in arbitrary dimensions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 30:18, s. 184010-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ghost-free bimetric theories describe nonlinear interactions of massive and massless spin-2 fields and, hence, provide a natural framework for investigating the phenomenon of partial masslessness for massive spin-2 fields at the nonlinear level. In this paper we analyse the spectrum of the ghost-free bimetric theory in arbitrary dimensions. Using a recently proposed construction, we identify the candidate nonlinear partially massless (PM) theories. It is shown that, in a 2-derivative setup, nonlinear PM theories can exist only in three and four dimensions. But on adding Lanczos-Lovelock terms to the bimetric action it is found that higher derivative nonlinear PM theories could also exist in higher dimensions. This is consistent with existing results on the direct construction of cubic vertices with PM gauge symmetry. We obtain the candidate nonlinear PM theories in five, six and eight dimensions but find that none exist in seven dimensions.

  • Extended Weyl invariance in a bimetric model and partial masslessness
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 33:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We revisit a particular ghost-free bimetric model which is related to both partial masslessness (PM) and conformal gravity. Linearly, the model propagates six instead of seven degrees of freedom not only around de Sitter but also around flat spacetime. Nonlinearly, the equations of motion can be recast in the form of expansions in powers of curvatures, and exhibit a remarkable amount of structure. In this form, the equations are shown to be invariant under scalar gauge transformations, at least up to six orders in derivatives, the lowest order term being a Weyl scaling of the metrics. The terms at two-derivative order reproduce the usual PM gauge transformations on de Sitter backgrounds. At the four-derivative order, a potential obstruction that could destroy the symmetry is shown to vanish. This in turn guarantees the gauge invariance to at least six-orders in derivatives. This is equivalent to adding up to ten-derivative corrections to conformal gravity. More generally, we outline a procedure for constructing the gauge transformations order by order as an expansion in derivatives and comment on the validity and limitations of the procedure. We also discuss recent arguments against the existence of a PM gauge symmetry in bimetric theory and show that, at least in their present form, they are evaded by the model considered here. Finally, we argue that a bimetric approach to PM theory is more promising than one based on the existence of a fundamental PM field.

  • A new proof of the Bianchi type IX attractor theorem
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 26:7, s. 1-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the dynamics towards the initial singularity of Bianchi type IX vacuum and orthogonal perfect fluid models with a linear equation of state. The `Bianchi type IX attractor theorem' states that the past asymptotic behavior of generic type IX solutions is governed by Bianchi type I and II vacuum states (Mixmaster attractor). We give a comparatively short and self-contained new proof of this theorem. The proof we give is interesting in itself, but more importantly it illustrates and emphasizes that type IX is special, and to some extent misleading when one considers the broader context of generic models without symmetries

  • Future asymptotics of vacuum Bianchi type VI0 solutions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 26:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a thorough analysis of the future asymptotic dynamics of spatially homogeneous cosmological models of Bianchi type VI0. Each of these models converges to a flat Kasner solution (Taub solution) for late times; we give detailed asymptotic expansions describing this convergence. In particular, we prove that the future asymptotics of Bianchi type VI0 solutions cannot be approximated in any way by Bianchi type II solutions, which is in contrast to Bianchi type VIII and IX models (in the direction toward the singularity). The paper contains an extensive introduction where we put the results into a broader context. The core of these considerations consists in the fact that there exist regions in the phase space of Bianchi type VIII models where solutions can be approximated, to a high degree of accuracy, by type VI0 solutions. The behavior of solutions in these regions is essential for the question of 'locality', i.e., whether particle horizons form or not. Since Bianchi type VIII models are conjectured to be important role models for generic cosmological singularities, our understanding of Bianchi type VI0 dynamics might thus be crucial to help to shed some light on the important question of whether to expect generic singularities to be local or not.

  • Mixmaster: Fact and Belief
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 26:075016, s. 1-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the dynamics towards the initial singularity of Bianchi type IX vacuum and orthogonal perfect fluid models with a linear equation of state. Surprisingly few facts are known about the `Mixmaster' dynamics of these models, while at the same time most of the commonly held beliefs are rather vague. In this paper, we use Mixmaster facts as a base to build an infrastructure that makes it possible to sharpen the main Mixmaster beliefs. We formulate explicit conjectures concerning (i) the past asymptotic states of type IX solutions and (ii) the relevance of the Mixmaster/Kasner map for generic past asymptotic dynamics. The evidence for the conjectures is based on a study of the stochastic properties of this map in conjunction with dynamical systems techniques. We use a dynamical systems formulation, since this approach has so far been the only successful path to obtain theorems, but we also make comparisons with the `metric' and Hamiltonian `billiard' approaches

  • Monotonic functions in Bianchi models: why they exist and how to find them
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 27:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All rigorous and detailed dynamical results in Bianchi cosmology rest upon the existence of a hierarchical structure of conserved quantities and monotonic functions. In this paper we uncover the underlying general mechanism and derive this hierarchical structure from the scale-automorphism group for an illustrative example, vacuum and diagonal class A perfect fluid models. First, kinematically, the scale-automorphism group leads to a reduced dynamical system that consists of a hierarchy of scale-automorphism invariant sets. Second, we show that, dynamically, the scale-automorphism group results in scale-automorphism invariant monotone functions and conserved quantities that restrict the flow of the reduced dynamical system

  • Quantum corrections in massive bigravity and new effective composite metrics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 32:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the interactions between the two metrics of the ghost-free massive bigravity. When considering gravitons running in the loops, we show how the structure of the interactions gets destabilized at the quantum level, exactly in the same way as in its massive gravity limit. A priori one might have expected a better quantum behavior, however, the broken diffeomorphism invariance out of the two initial diffeomorphisms in bigravity has similar consequences at the quantum level as the broken diffeomorphism in massive gravity. From lessons of the generated quantum corrections through matter loops we propose yet other types of effective composite metrics to which the matter fields can couple. Among these new effective metrics there might be one or more that could provide interesting phenomenology and important cosmological implications.

  • Static spacetimes with prescribed multipole moments: a proof of a conjecture by Geroch
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - Bristol, UK : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 26:21, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a sequence of multipole moments for a static spacetime to exist with precisely these moments. The proof is constructive in the sense that a metric having prescribed multipole moments up to a given order can be calculated. Since these sufficient conditions agree with already known necessary conditions, this completes the proof of a long standing conjecture due to Geroch.

  • The gravitational dipole and explicit multipole moments of static axisymmetric spacetimes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Classical and quantum gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 0264-9381 .- 1361-6382. ; 21:22, s. 5121-5138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multipole moments of static axisymmetric asymptotically flat spacetimes are considered. The usual set of recursively defined tensors is replaced with one real-valued function m defined on R+ ∪ {0}, where the moments are given by the derivatives of m at 0. As examples of applications, we show that the Schwarzschild spacetime is the gravitational monopole and derive the metric for the gravitational dipole.
