  • Mechanical aspects of installation of integrated magnets at Solaris synchrotron storage ring
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: SPIE Proceedings. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 9662, s. 966234-966234
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solaris synchrotron storage ring which has been assembled at the beginning of the 2015, consist of twelve integrated magnets blocks performing the part of double bend achromat. Both magnets as well as the whole ring as concept is a replica of Max IV 1.5 GeV ring and utilize pioneering integrated magnets approach. Solaris ring assembly forewent that of its Swedish twin. It is a successful proof of principle experiment showing the feasibility of the chosen approach. On the other hand it was an exercise which brought the knowledge on mechanical behavior of the magnets blocks and matching components, which is of unique importance for further integrated magnets implementations. Hereby we present selected issues related to the ring assembly: block stiffness verification and straightness rectification, vacuum chamber installation, alignment and mechanical stability of the assembled system.

    • The Origins Space Telescope (OST) is a NASA study for a large satellite mission to be submitted to the 2020 Decadal Review. The proposed satellite has a fleet of instruments including the HEterodyne Receivers for OST (HERO). HERO is designed around the quest to follow the trail of water from the ISM to disks around protostars and planets. HERO will perform high-spectral resolution measurements with 2x9 pixel focal plane arrays at any frequency between 468GHz to 2,700GHz (617 to 111 μm). HERO builds on the successful Herschel/HIFI heritage, as well as recent technological innovations, allowing it to surpass any prior heterodyne instrument in terms of sensitivity and spectral coverage.

  • Excitonic effects in ZnO nanowires and hollow nanotubes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 6486:648614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy levels and wave functions of ground and excited states of an exciton are calculated by the method of imaginary time. Energy levels as functions of radius of single and double wall nanotube are studied. Asymptotic behavior of energy levels at large and small values of the radius using perturbation theory and adiabatic approximation is considered. Spatially indirect exciton in semiconductor nanowire is also investigated. Experimental result from high quality reproducible ZnO nanowires grown by low temperature chemical engineering is presented. State of the art high brightness white light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs) are demonstrated from the grown ZnO nano-wires. The color temperature and color rendering index (CRI) of the HB-LEDs values was found to be (3250 K, 82), and (14000 K, 93), for the best LEDs, which means that the quality of light is superior to one obtained from GaN LEDs available on the market today. The role of VZn and Vo on the emission responsible for the white light band as well as the peak position of this important wide band is thoroughly investigated in a systematic way.

  • Thermospheric infrared radiance response to the April 2002 geomagnetic storm from SABER infrared and GUVI ultraviolet limb data
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 5235, s. 250-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The SABER instrument on TIMED continuously measures certain infrared limb radiance profiles with unprecedented sensitivity. Among these are emissions of CO 2 v 3 at 4.3 μm, routinely recorded to tangent heights of ∼140-150 km, and NO at 5.3 μm, seen to above 200 km. Both of these are greatly enhanced during periods of strong auroral activity, when they can be measured to ∼200 km and ∼300 km, respectively. We use these infrared channels of SABER and coincident far ultraviolet (FUV) measurements from GUVI on TIMED, to study the geomagnetic storm of April 2002. These all give a consistent measure of auroral energy input into the lower thermosphere at high latitudes. Emission in yet another SABER channel, near 2.0 μm, correlates well with enhanced electron energy deposition. We also have, in the 5.3-μm emissions from the long-lived population of aurorally produced NO, a tracer of how this energy is transported equatorward and released over an extended period of time, a few days. In this paper, we discuss the global patterns of energy deposition into the expanded auroral oval, its transport to lower latitudes, and its loss as revealed by the NO 5.3-μm emissions.

  • Grating-assisted add-drop multiplexer realized in silica-on-silicon technology
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 4941, s. 43-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Silica-on-Silicon is a well established technology for the fabrication of low insertion loss planar lightwave circuits. The Ge-doped waveguide core material, deposited with low temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and not subjected to high temperature annealing, is highly UV light photosensitive, due to residual Ge/Si-OH groups in the material that, similarly to hydrogen loading, can contribute to the formation of those defect centers responsible for the photosensitivity. Gratings have been-fabricated using a pulsed 193 nm ArF excimer laser and a phase mask. 25 mm long gratings, written on standard straight waveguides, show a record 47 dB extinction ratio and 0.2 nm rejection bandwidth for TE polarization, without hydrogen loading. Such narrow linewidth filters could find application in dense WDM systems. We designed and fabricated a compact Add/Drop multiplexer based on a high bandwidth, 2x2 multimode interference device, having a Bragg grating written in the multi-mode region. The characterisation for the TE polarisation prove the proposed Add/Drop principle, showing, in correspondence of the dropped channel, a 30dB dip at the transmitted output and a reflection peak at the drop output, this last having a larger bandwidth, and around 3dB excess loss respect to the transmitted channels.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 4087, s. 503-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Silicabased planar technology on silicon has been identified as avery serious source of devices for optical communications:ystems. Low temperaturefabrication of passive and active structures is of special interestas it allows monolithicintegration with temperature sensitive semiconductor components ona common silicon platform.Standard PEC\'D (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition)processing for fabrication of silica based opticalwaveguides has been investigatedto optimize the process parameters. We chose a high powerprocess regime with highratio between nitrous oxide and silane gasflows as the best conditions. Significant improvement in optical propertiesofsilica-on-silicon planar waveguides for optical communication in the 1.50 -1.55 tmwavelength range has been obtained.

  • 2012

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the recent decade metamaterials with magnetic permeability different than unity and unusual response to the magnetic field of incident light have been intensively explored. Existence of magnetic artificial materials created an interest in a scanning near-field magnetic microscope for studies of magnetic responses of subwavelength elementary cells of those metamaterials. We present a method of measuring magnetic responses of such elementary cells within a wide range of optical frequencies with single probes of two types. The first type probe is made of a tapered silica fiber with radial metal stripes separated by equidistant slits of constant angular width. The second type probe is similar to metal coated, corrugated, tapered fiber apertured SNOM probe, but in this case corrugations are radially oriented. Both types of probes have internal illumination with azimuthally polarized light. In the near-field they concentrate into a subwavelength spot the longitudinal magnetic field component which is much stronger than the perpendicular electric one.

  • Fabrication of corrugated probes for scanning near-field optical microscopy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9780819486608 ; 8070
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a method of fabricating aperture tapered-fiber metal-coated SNOM probes with a corrugated core surface which assures efficient photon-to-plasmon conversion and thus high energy throughput. High energy throughput allows for a small apex aperture and high resolution. The procedure consists of recording of Bragg grating in the to-be-tapered part of a Ge-doped silica fiber and chemical etching with the Turner method. Bragg gratings are recorded with UV light through nearly sinusoidal phase masks of chosen lattice constants. The refractive index contrast in the Bragg grating differentiates the etch rate of the Ge-doped hydrogenated fiber core in exposed and unexposed parts by about 100 nm/min at room temperature.

  • Optimization of transmission and focusing properties of plasmonic nanolenses
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9780819486608 ; 8070
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider two kinds of plasmonic nanolenses which focus radially polarized Laguerre-Gauss beam into subwavelength spot. The first one is free-standing opaque metal layer with concentric grooves on both sides [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 183902 (2009)]. The second has slits instead of grooves thus concentric rings have to be integrated with dielectric matrix. Constructive interference of far-field radiation of SPPs scattered on the back side of the lenses gives subwavelength size foci approaching the Rayleigh resolution limit. We investigate transmission and focusing properties of considered metal structures. Choice of appropriate metal such as silver, gold, copper or aluminum strongly affects transmission. Parameters of surface structure determine efficient photon-plasmon coupling and plasmon scattering phenomenon thus influence both transmission and focusing effect. Finally, the choice of dielectric function of surrounding medium gives another degree of freedom to fulfill momentum matching condition for resonant photon-plasmon interaction. In this paper, taking into account the above parameters, we show an optimization procedure, which leads to high transmission, tight focal spot and large focal length of the considered plasmonic nanolenses.

  • Enhanced photoresponse of inkjet printed ZnO thin films induced by chemically capped CdS nanoparticles by dip coating
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 7402, s. 740207-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Monodispersed CdS nanoparticles (NP) are dip coated on porous ZnO thin film deposited by inkjet printing. Optical absorption characteristics of the composite films show that the composite exhibits two main peaks centered at 355 nm due to the absorption at UV region from ZnO, and 433 nm arising from CdS NP. On UV radiations the electrical conductivity of CdS/ZnO composite thin film with 5 dip cycles is found to be enhanced more than three orders magnitude compared with that of the ZnO which we attribute to be the effect of interfacial charge transfer. Also, the UV photoresponse of ZnO shows pronounced enhancement after CdS capping.
