  • Influence of solvents and substrates on the morphology and the performance of low-bandgap polyfluorene: PCBM photovoltaic devices - art. no. 61921X
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : International Society for Optical Engineering; 1999. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 6192, s. X1921-X1921
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin-coated thin films of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-5,5-(4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (APFO-3) blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) are used as the active material in polymer photovoltaic cells. Such blends are known for their tendency to phase separate during film formation. Tuning the morphology of the blend in a controlled way is one possible road towards higher efficiency. We studied the effect of adding chlorobenzene to chloroform-based blend solutions before spin-coating on the conversion efficiency of APFO-3:PCBM photodiodes, and related that to the lateral and vertical morphology of thin films of the blend. The lateral morphology is imaged by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the vertical compositional profile is obtained by dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The profiles reveal compositional variations consisting of multilayers of alternating polymer-rich and PCBM-rich domains in the blend film spin-coated from chloroform. The vertical compositional variations are caused by surface-directed spinodal waves and are frozen in during the rapid evaporation of a highly volatile solvent. With addition of the low-vapour pressure solvent chlorobenzene, a more homogeneous vertical composition is found. The conversion efficiency for solar cells of this blend was found to be optimal for chloroform: chlorobenzene mixtures with a volume-ratio of 80:1. We have also investigated the role of the substrate on the morphology. We found that blend films spin-coated from chloroform solutions on PEDOT:PSS-coated ITO show a similar compositional structure as the films on silicon, and that changing the substrate from silicon to gold only affects the vertical phase separation in a region close to the substrate interface.

  • Range camera on conveyor belts: estimating size distribution and systematic errors due to occlusion
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 118, s. 118-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When range cameras are used for analyzing irregular material on a conveyor belt there will be complications such as missing segments caused by occlusion. Also, a number of range discontinuities will be present. In the framework towards stochastic geometry, conditions are found for the cases when range discontinuities take place. The test objects are pellets for the steel industry. An illuminating laser plane will give range discontinuities at the edges of each individual object. These discontinuities are used to detect and measure the chord created by the intersection of the laser plane and the object. From the measured chords we derive the average diameter and its variance. An improved method is to use a pair of parallel illuminating light planes to extract two chords. The estimation error for this method is not larger than the natural shape fluctuations (the difference in diameter) for the pellets. The laser-camera optronics is sensitive enough both for material on a conveyor belt and free falling material leaving the conveyor.

  • Evaluation of 3D printed contrast detail phantoms for mammography quality assurance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 16th International Workshop on Breast Imaging, IWBI 2022. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9781510655843 ; 12286
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objects created by 3D printers are increasingly used in various medical applications. Today, affordable 3D printers, using Fused Deposition Modeling are widely available. In this project, a commercially available 3D printer was used to replicate a conventional radiographic contrast detail phantom. Printing materials were selected by comparing their x-ray attenuation properties. Two replicas were printed using polylactic acid, with different filling patterns. The printed phantoms were imaged by a clinical mammography system, using automatic exposure control. Phantom images were visually and quantitively compared to images of the corresponding conventional contrast detail phantom. Visual scoring of the contrast detail elements was performed by a medical physics student. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was calculated for each phantom element. The diameter and thickness of the smallest visible phantom object were 0.44 mm and 0.09 mm, respectively, for both filling patterns. For the conventional phantom, the diameter and thickness of the smallest visible object were 0.31 mm and 0.09 mm. Visual inspection of printed phantoms revealed some linear artefacts. These artefacts were however not visible on mammographic projections. Quantitively, average CNR of printed phantom objects followed the same trend with an increase of average CNR with increasing disk height. However, there is a limitation of detail objects with disk diameters below 1.25 mm, caused by the available nozzle size. Based upon the encouraging results, future work will explore the use of different materials and smaller nozzle diameters.

  • Optically pumped high-power semiconductor disk laser with gain element engineered for wide tunability
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9780819481931 ; 7720:1, s. 772014-8
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The layer structure of the gain element in an optically pumped semiconductor disk laser (OP-SDL) was designed for wide tunability. This was achieved by a parametric optimization of the structure, which in effect balanced the spectrally varying influence of the gain of the quantum wells, the longitudinal distribution of the standing wave lasing field in the structure, and the degree of resonance in the subcavity formed between the distributed Bragg reflector at the bottom and the air-semiconductor interface at the top. The quality measure in the optimization was the spectral reflectance of the gain element for light incident from the external cavity at low power. This unsaturated reflectance was compared to its target function, which was constant at a specified value larger than unity over a wide, prescribed wavelength range. The fabricated gain element was used in a linear OP-SDL with a rotatable intra-cavity birefringent filter for wavelength tuning. The design principles for achieving wide tunability were experimentally validated by the strong agreement between measurements and simulations of the spectral threshold pump intensity. Furthermore, tuning experiments at high pump powers were performed showing that the lasing wavelength could be tuned from 967 nm to 1010 nm with a maximum output power of 2.6 W.

  • Multi-parameter estimation of high-Q silicon rich nitride resonators using optical frequency domain reflectometry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 10535
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many linear and nonlinear optics applications rely on micro-resonators (MRRs) with carefully designed dispersion and coupling rate coefficients. These parameters are however challenging to measure for MRRs based on high-confinement optical waveguides. In this paper, we report on the use of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) for the measurement of group velocity dispersion (GVD), coupling coefficients and round-Trip loss, in high-Q (Q i ∼ 0.3 × 10 6 ) silicon-rich nitride MRRs. This technique allows for retrieving the GVD coefficients, intrinsic losses and coupling coefficients for each transverse mode in the resonator, thus providing very valuable feed-back information from experiments to the design flow step.

  • A high resolution multi-object spectrograph for the VLT : a pre-concept design
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ground-based and Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy IX. - : SPIE. - 1996-756X .- 0277-786X. - 9781510653498 ; 12184
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the idea originally proposed during the ESO-Workshop The Very Large Telescope in 2030, the concept of a high resolution spectrograph for the VLT has been further explored, both for the science and technological aspects. Such an instrument will fill a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. Its key characteristic will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000-80000) with multi-object (50-100) capabilities and, possibly, a stability that would provide high radial velocity precision (∼10m/s). In this work, we describe the science cases and driving science requirements for the instrument. Furthermore we will present some design solutions and technical options considered to meet these requirements.

  • 220-GHz imaging radar with 1 Hz frame rate using an array of homodyne transceivers
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 10634
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a 220 GHz imaging radar prototype that has been developed in the European Defense Agency (EDA) project TIPPSI. The purpose of the development was to demonstrate short-range high-resolution 3D imaging for security applications at checkpoints, and to guide the development of stand-off real-time millimeter wave and sub-millimeter wave imaging systems for detection of larger objects at greater distances. An additional goal was to experimentally verify simulation techniques for active (sub)-mmw imaging systems, the verified simulation techniques can then be used to explore different system architectures. The 220 GHz imaging radar prototype consist of a flexible, mechanically scanned optical system that can support linear arrays of transmit/receive (TxRx) units up to 150 mm in length. The optical system is divided into two parts: A compact Dragonian system including the mechanical scanner that can be used as a stand-alone imager at reduced target distance and resolution, and a confocal system that can be added to achieve the full resolution of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm at 4.5 m target distance. The field of view of the full resolution system is 70 cm x 70 cm. The front-end is currently populated by 4 TxRx units that are sparsely distributed along the 150 mm focal plane. The TxRx units operate in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) mode and have a bandwidth of 24 GHz. Each TxRx unit use a single horn antenna and the transmit- and receive signals are generated and received using the same circuits which avoids the need of a duplexer. We will demonstrate high resolution 3D videos taken at 1 Hz frame rate and compare the individual images with simulations using electromagnetic simulators and character/clothes animation.
