  • Swedish environmental history of the Baltic Sea A review of current knowledge and perspectives for the future
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; , s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Western culture, oceans have traditionally been perceived as timeless, separate from society and practically boundless in resources and absorptive capacity. As a result, the entangled histories of people and marine environments have largely been neglected in historical research. This is changing with the development of marine environmental history together with increasing recognition of oceans' vulnerability and importance in earth systems. Against this background, we review the current state of historical knowledge of how different actors within Swedish society have perceived and impacted the Baltic Sea environment, as well as discovered and responded to marine environmental change. We find that this environmental history, as distinct from other forms of historical research, has so far received limited attention. While the environmental histories of terrestrial resources in Sweden - including forests, agriculture, minerals and energy - have been thoroughly studied, there is little comparative knowledge about the formation and development of the major scientific institutions and public agencies involved in Baltic Sea governance. In light of this, we discuss how knowledge about Sweden's marine environmental history can be improved, and the importance this may have for the future sustainability of the Baltic Sea.

  • The Descents of Military Violence against Civilians: a history of the present
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7716 .- 0346-8755. ; 39:2, s. 153-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inspired by the works of Michel Foucault and Erling Sandmo, this article explores contemporary discourses of military violence against civilians from a genealogical perspective. The purpose is to shed light on the historicity of certain structures of knowledge, thoughts, politics and ethics that are fundamental for the ways in which military violence against civilians is put into words, interpreted and explained in various situations and contexts today. My main argument is that the descents of Swedish contemporary discourse on military violence against civilians can be traced back to epistemological and politico-legal conflicts in the 17th century.

  • Towards A Biopolitics Of The Victimized Body : Creating assault as a crime against health and life, c. 1945–1965
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Routledge. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 45:1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the creation of assault as a crime against health and life as this discursive process is expressed through Swedish laws, legislative discussions, and legal practice from 1945 to 1965. Inspired by Michel Foucault’s theoretical reflections on biopolitics and sociologist Thomas Lemke’s outline to a analytics of biopolitics, the article argues that a most central component in the genealogy of assault as a crime against health and life was a shift in the first post-war decades, from a predominant legal idealistic paradigm within Swedish jurisprudence, by which assault was defined as a crime against bodily integrity, to a legal realistic epistemology, imbued with the scientific knowledge and empirical ‘truth’-producing practices of modern medicine. As an effect, new discourses around the victimized body emerged, through which prevailing knowledges and ‘truths’ around violent crime and its effects were challenged and marginalized. In this discursive process, the 19th-century legal-moral category of violent crimes finally collapsed into the overarching legal category prescribed by Brottsbalken (1965) as ‘crimes against health and life’. Consequently, the victimized body was deprived of all meaning but ‘life’ and thus created as a biopolitical space, available to series of life-governing interventions and regulatory practices.

  • Traditional or modern peasants? : Odelsrett and Bördsrätt in Parliamentary Debates, 1810 – 1860
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7716 .- 0346-8755. ; 46:1, s. 63-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Under the influence of the Enlightenment, civil legislation was transformed throughout Western Europe in the first half of the 19th century. As part of this, property rights changed, and a more individualized ownership emerged. Since property rights in Sweden and Norway had been characterized by a strong bond between land and family, the legal changes were subject of much political debate in both countries. Debate focused on two legal devices, bördsrätt (in Sweden) and odelsrett (in Norway). Both these emphasized families’ rights to ancestral land holdings. However, the outcomes of the debates differed greatly. Bördsrätt was abolished in Sweden but odelsrett was retained in Norway. This article seeks to explain this divergence by exploring the debates and the differing opinions voiced from 1810 to 1860. The article argues that the divergence should be seen as the result of different peasant strategies. When the preservation of the traditional peasant was in focus in Norway, the Swedish peasantry stood out as more commercialized and, in a sense, more modern.

  • Fever, sun, and blood : sermons, amulets, and incantations as sources for magical practices in Medieval Europe
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 49:4, s. 421-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel method to access lived religion and magical practices of a Medieval congregation via sermons combined with material culture. Previously, scholars have dismissed sermons as having low ‘truth value’ due to the copying inherent in the genre. In this paper, I first examine how one Danish sermon was adapted from a German model to fit a local context. This adaptation reveals specific local practices that the preacher thought were relevant to his congregation. Secondly, I demonstrate how several practices described in the sermons are mirrored in surviving non-normative material evidence such as amulets and incantations in manuscripts. This interdisciplinary combination of sermon studies, magic studies, archaeology, and medieval studies yields an as-yet-untapped source group. The paper concludes that 1) sermons can indeed be used as sources for magical practices and lived religion, and 2) they can be used as sources for practices that did not leave material evidence. Finally, discussions of the importance of material evidence in sermon studies and how magical practices were both locally anchored and part of an international network are broached.

  • Diplomacy as a means of cultural transfer in early modern times : The Swedish evidence
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 31:2, s. 144-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper offers an introduction to the following papers, which represent the results Of a round table at the Nordiska Historikermote 2004 in Stockholm. It discusses the renewed interest in the study of diplomacy and international politics. This revival during the past few decades is sometimes not more than a reinvention of the old diplomatic history. However, it is also influenced by the history of ideas, as elaborated by Anglo-American historians, and modern cultural sociology. The history of diplomacy seen from the perspective of cultural transfer offers new insights into early modem diplomacy based on a new reading of well-known material.

  • Poor Relief, Taxes and the First Universal Pension Reform: the origin of the Swedish welfare state reconsidered
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7716 .- 0346-8755. ; 35:4, s. 391-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the year 1900, Sweden probably had the oldest population in the contemporary world. It was also the first nation to implement a universal pension system in 1913. The universal character in early social legislation has certainly been decisive for the development of the Swedish welfare state. This alternative has not been self-evident. Why did the reforms turn universal, when the continental model, the Bismarck social security system, was exclusively directed at industrial workers? Research has concentrated on demographic factors and growing demands for social security, or on the fact that Sweden was still a predominantly rural society with about 2,400 local authorities. This article examines the development of social legislation in the light of local government expenditures and incomes, and suggests an overlooked possibility: the formulation of the first universal national social security reform was a redistributional response to uneven distribution of incomes and general expenditures among the rural districts in Sweden.

  • About Home and Giving Voice to Experiences of Marginalization : a feminist reading of the 1970s social report-books about migration policy in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Routledge. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 36:4, s. 500-516
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract This article explores and analyses narratives in social report-books in the context of structural rationalization during the 1960s and 1970s in Sweden, which entailed large movements of people both in Sweden and Finland (as it did in other countries of Western Europe). The characteristics of the report-books are that they claim to depict the truth and to give voices to marginalized people with the aim to contribute to social change. The analysis dwells not only on the content of the books, but also on the narrative techniques employed. It is discussed how the authors were tied to their political context and the general discourse of social critique in their rendering of voices. The main questions of this article are: whose voices were paid attention to and how was home narrated and represented? One kind of narrative content links home attachment to roots in a rural context, where home centres on reproduction of families, territorial claims and nature hugging. It is established through rhetoric of nature and timelessness, fathers passing inheritance on to their sons and a desire for a non-alienated existence in an archaic landscape. The narrative techniques used are based on an invisible narrator and on a travel narration with questions and answers. It is mainly male voices that are paid attention to. Female voices are to some extent heard but marginalized. Female bodily practices and habits are connected to positions as wives and daughters. The fisherman, the hunter, the woodlander and the farmer, are (re)presented as threatened male positions and therefore male bodies will in a near future be out of place. These narratives are framed by a patriarchal discourse where bodies are naturalized and made straight. Quite another kind of narrative content is forward-looking, dealing with voices in a suburban context. The montage as a narrative technique is systematically used there, combining text and image. The didactic montage is intended to be educational, to enlighten people with the aid of pointers. This calls for activity on the part of the reader/observer, who is supposed to be given the impression of having interpreted the meanings independently. It is based on consciousness-raising as a feminist method for change. This narrative of home is about societal participation and resenting and resisting patriarchal distinctions such as public/private. It is framed by a feminist discourse where bodies are denaturalized and orientated at finding space for the displaced body to expand.
